Sixteen games seems a good compromise length for a match. I don't like the 10, 12, or 14 game matches either but I hate blitz finishes even more. Just restore the champion retaining the title in the event of a tied match.

You might have mentioned that Fischer/Karpov would have indeed happened had FIDE accepted Fisher's final condition, that the challenger had to win not only 10 games but also by a two-point margin. So a 10-9 'win' by the challenger would still have been insufficient to win the title.

The unlimited match seemed like a good idea at the time because people like Charles Kalme conned people into thinking that a match to 10 wins wouldn't go longer than 23 games, because that's how long such matches took in the 19th century. It sounds totally insane, but Kalme was a professional mathematician and had a series of specious arguments that people were afraid to challenge because of his credentials, and also because they really wanted to believe it, because the Unlimited Match was "Fischer's System". Basically, Kalme believed that there was an unalterable, scientific "Draw Expectation" that was 100% based on the match format, and was totally unaffected by other factors, like player parity, playing styles, era, or anything else. According to Kalme, a Pure Wins match was the best format, and guaranteed very few draws (because if people have to win 10 games, they'll obviously try to do it as quickly as possible). On the other hand, the worst format was the Wins or Points format, that Karpov and Korchnoi had used in the 1974 Candidates Final (never mind that the other 6 Candidates Matches that year used the same format, without getting the same results. Kalme was famous for tossing out data that didn't fit the pattern he wanted). Anyway, Kalme's views were ruined in 1978, when Karpov and Korchnoi had almost exactly the same number of draws after Game 24 in a Pure Wins match as they had had in the Wins or Points match. But the Pure Wins format struggled on anyway, until the 1984/5 match killed it stone dead.

I hadn't read the comments. I just saw that move today: .., Bh7 / Qe3+, g5 /hg5+, Qh5 / Qxc3 (Do NOT win the Bishop by trading Queens, or the c-Pawn will queen), Black brings out his Bishop & the game continues, with White's a-Pawn being a big threat.

I don't think I agree with you that the "unlimited" match format is dumb... I think it sounds like it could be interesting. Maybe Magnus would be more interested in continuing to defend the title if it wasn't compressed down to two weeks or whatever it currently is. More time for preparation, or to just take a break for a few weeks or even months.

@user-pl6hc4kj1o
@user-pl6hc4kj1o Жыл бұрын
Not wanting the match to last forever I think is precisely the reason there (eventually) would be an incentive for both players to play for a win, and therefore result in fewer draws and a more exciting match, overall. (As it stands now, I believe, a drawn match means the champion retains the title, right? And even for the challenger -- a draw is better than a loss, et cetera...) I don't really see the venue thing as a huge problem either. Just book it one game at a time.
