Join Daniel Norton OnSet as he answers the question, how to best warm up skin tone with lighting. For many photographers, color correction gels such as CTO are the first gels they work with. While warming a scene via color temperature can work, for the best results, Cosmetic gels are the way to go.

Fantastic video. I had to try it, but since Rosco discontinued the filters I had to shoot with CTO and the result is as you said not that good. Can you recommend another filter? Thank you! Keep up the good work!

Subtle indeed. Daniel said it helped with contrast - true. It looked, on my display, the cosmetic subtle also made Ashley's hair and lips a shade darker towards red. Which I thought looked better.

It has become so much easier to achieve specific results. Back in the day (35 + years) if we wanted to change the tone of lighting, we could change film (speeds, brand names all had slightly different tonal values) or rely on Kodak gels or use different make-up. The use of digital format has made a tremendous and positive difference in the way we view the world around us.

Interesting, I didn't know they offered these. I've been using #3409 and 3410 (CTO 1/4 & 1/8) but haven't been fully happy with them, as you said they can be too orange on some people. I'll look for these beauty gels.

A question I’ve always had about cosmetic gels ... if I want to use a color checker passport in my work flow would I take the photo of the Xrite before adding the gel to the light? Seems to me WB after gelling would defeat the purpose but I do want to have a balanced starting point, I also would probably be using a non gelled rim light or fill. (Or would you want to gel the fill as well?) so many questions about shooting this way. Also is the cosmetic peach the most versatile cosmetic gel color if you were to only buy one? Or do they only come in variety packs?

Once you start adding gels, the Colorchecker becomes redundant. As soon as you create a profile, it will try to counteract any colour cast you've introduced with your gel.

Daniel. Hello. Another awesome video. I love gels but not OTT. I have a question about your background there, if I may ask (I don’t mean your personal background 😂, that will be rude). It appears the bracket / support for the paper background is from one side only. It must be a very strong support, and the advantage is a space saver. Can you please shed more light on that background setup please? Thank you.

Thanks Daniel. I just checked the Rosco Beauty Kit and there are a few "Cosmetic" gels but there is no "Cosmetic Tint" gel. Any chance you can let us know which specific one was used in the second shot?

Thank you, Daniel for demonstration. Using different gels, including cosmetics has one dark side (not mentioning additional price for films), the white balance is off as well. We can see it on Ashley's eyes whites. I think, for those who are tethered, we have better and easy solution. To create similar correction to worming the skin only in Capture One Pro takes a couple minutes at the beginning of the session. And the correction would apply to the rest of the images. Yes, Pavel, deliberately changing the color of the actual light does indeed change the white balance, that's the point of it. (And why you shoot gel + white balance 'flash'). Not everyone wants to dick around in post-production making paintbrush selections on somebody's face because they want it to look like a different color of light was falling on the skin than on the teeth and eyes.
