Could this finally be the ultimate British shark story? Where a Great White shark is patrolling the shallow waters and estuaries of Britain's South coast. The Totally Awesome Fishing Show has been aware of the shark for two years, and have been trying to film and tag it. Here are some of the interviews from people who might convince you that there really is a monster shark out there.

It's a common myth that great whites love warm water. In fact they spend most of their lives in water very similar to what we see around the UK. It's likely that some great whites make their way to parts of Scotland, Ireland and the UK south coast. It's not impossible and in fact it's more of a question as to why don't we see more great whites? we have ideal conditions and food supply for them.

It was most likely my ex wife,she swims down at eastney quite regularly,if you do spot her APPROACH WITH CAUTION But in all seriousness though,it’s completely viable that we in the uk have the odd great white shark enter our water territory,warmer waters,food chain,and the fact great whites are solitary and often get lost and end up in different coastlines

Great whites are prevalent in very cold waters, they have the unique ability to keep their body temps up. I live on the east coast in Great Yarmouth and we have a massive population of seals and pups, only a few years ago there was a seal washed up with a chunk bitten out of it, the bite was massive, there is no way that was a small shark....makes you think.

Of course there are white pointers in UK waters... 1) There is a resident seal population 2) There are large schools of fish 3) Water is rich in nutrients and cold 4) The med is a breeding ground for whites. 5) They like to hug coasts in their migratory paths In my eyes, that is the mix that you need. I live in Australia and am Portuguese, and have done enough research to identify white sharks even in Portugal. One quick swim up the coast your in north Spain, another stretch your between France and UK. Totally feasible.

Yeah, its totally plausible that great whites venture into British waters, especially in the south. They generally live in coastal waters with water temperatures ranging from 12 to 24 degrees, Cornwall has an average summer sea temperature of 18 degrees, and along with its high seal population would make a ideal habitat for white sharks. So I do believe that great white sharks do visit British waters during the warmer months.

There has been many sightings of great whites in UK waters and very probable they are predating on the seals that since protected are in abundance. One tagged female great white (named Nicole) crossed the ocean from South Africa to Australia and back again traveling 20,000 kilometres, so we know they roam in search of prey, they can raise their internal temperature above that of colder waters so they are very likely there.

@JohnnysCafe_
@JohnnysCafe_ 3 ай бұрын
@@carolewalls3615 hello Carole, yes I understand that porbeagles, thresher, blue, short fined mako are the larger predatory sharks found in UK waters but I was reasoning that with the great white numbers rising because of the ban on killing them and because UK waters are again clean and healthy the fish numbers have increased which in turn brought back large seal colony numbers the great whites would naturally turn up where there is an abundance of prey. The water temp should not matter as great whites are found in the Mediterranean (a fact I did not know when I used to holiday in Italy and Greece) and then there was an attack on a diver at Campbell Island 660 klms south of Dunedin NZ so they do live in colder waters. Waw! That was a big reply, sorry about going on there 😄

I was in the Sea at Hayling at the weekend - not sure I will be getting back in. What puzzles me is that Great Whites are typically ambush hunters of seals and will hide in deep water, wait for a Seal sillouette and will launch at high speed and breach the water when impact is made. So, is the water at Langstone, Eastney, Chichester harbours deep enough for it to do this ? Seals are too fast and smart to be caught without the surprise attack. Never heard of Great Whites chasing bait fish into shallow water, not sure they have the speed to make the energy consumed worth while. Mako and Porbeagle have the right teeth and speed for catching fish, great white teeths are designed to saw big chunks of flesh from their prey. All that said if there are Seals about then that is Sharks number one food. Was there not also an incident where a load of small sharks were found stranded in chicester harbour ? What forced them there, fear of a large predator. Last point - if there is a Great White paddle boarders beware the silliouette is similar to a surf board and surfers have been mistaken by GW's in the US, SA, Australia etc etc. With modern technology surely it is possible to place some movement sensitive cameras at the harbour entrance to see what is travelling in and out ?
@adriancarter2863

The shark that chased the bait fish into shallow water was probably a Thresher Shark. Once in shallow water, uses its long tail to stun its prey which it can then eat at its leisure.

It's very possible a GW would be in Britain. Waters are getting very warm in summer, and we have the most dense seal population for their food. Also, many extremely closely related sharks, such as the porbeagle already live here. There is no reason for a GW not to be here!

I spent a great deal of my life from the late sixties to the early eighties around Chichester harbour Hayling island langston and the solent, seals were not around in any numbers back then inspite of large shoals of fish But I do remember sharks driving shoals into the corner of hayling island and the Chichester bar in order to feed. The fact that there are now greater numbers of seals and that blue fin seem to be returning is more likely to be attracting the great whites than global warming. Traditionally if you find blue fin you find great whites. I would imagine back in the mid nineteenth century when Whitby was a sports fishery for blue fin ,great whites were probably found in the north sea in large numbers as well.. the advent of steam trawlers and the destruction of the herring fisheries probably saw their loss as local fauna, add in the muddying of the north sea by bottom trawling and the new larger screw driven ships and you have all the ingredients for habitat destruction. Fishermen have been reporting sightings of great whites up on the Scottish west coast for twenty years now so it would seem only natural to be finding these large predators returning to the south coast, and have most likely been there longer than we know.

I personally think the UK and/or Ireland is a pupping location. Someone needs to study the years of the sightings, if there's a pattern of sightings every other year. It could easily be a female as their migration is longer compared to males. The food sources are here for both juveniles and adults, I think the only thing that might prevent them are orca.

Great White's are off the shores of UK waters. I have dived in Australia, Africa and UK for the Whites. They hunt in packs, over a large distance. Africa are packed pact out with them. Hard to spot and find in Australia but they abundently there. I have seen them off the coast of Scotland, South Wales (Gower - Pembroke), Cornwall / the south coast of England. It has nothing to do with warm waters. It is about the food chain, seals, whales, etc. Good luck with your search. Right time and place and you'll get one.

Yes it's true the largest great whites were found off the whaling stations around the Azores and one of the closest relations the salmon shark is caught of northern Canada .But to be honest I was full time fisherman, long lining around the far west of Cornwall for some years and have never heard of or seen a great white being caught, as well as In the winter you used to get 100 plus hand liners on mackerel creating what must be one hell of a scent trail .I think what our friend saw was a large mako, a shark that was unknown around the uk until the 1950s ,but the present rod caught record is over 500 pounds although it is a very rare fish and many people claim to have seen one but very few have. As for tuna ,a lot of very rich anglers used to follow the herring boats in the 1920s and if I remember rightly we held the world rod caught record for a time at over 850 pounds ,and so it's possible that they are still around.Yes there could be great whites around the uk ,but if there are they are very,very,very rare, but like all things at sea anything is possible.

To be fair though mate great white sharks weren't known to places like Russia and Hawaii until fairly recently,I think theres so little known about the white shark population in the northeast Atlantic in general but there have been recordings in the bay of Biscay including la Rochelle,so you've fished waters just a few miles from a RECORDED sighting 😉

Aberdeen 11.1, Blackpool 15, Brighton 15, Falmouth 16.1, Newquay 16.1 These are current temperatures around Britain at this time of year. A Great White frequents water in the temperature range of 12-24 degrees. We have a massive population of seals which are the sharks main diet. "Taken from Wikipedia":- Great white sharks live in almost all coastal and offshore waters which have water temperature between 12 and 24 °C (54 and 75 °F), with greater concentrations in the United States (Northeast and California), South Africa, Japan, Oceania, Chile, and the Mediterranean. As far as I'm concerned the only reason people don't believe they are there is because they haven't seen one. There have been sightings and people are still sceptical?

I've always believed in there being Great Whites here in the UK and hope that this is true, especially as I'm not far from this area. I know a Salcombe fisherman that runs three boats and believes they are about. What I do hope though is that not every bozo goes out to try and catch it. It has to be remembered that they are a protected species now and should be tagged catch and release. I have zero respect for anyone that kills such a beautiful creature. The Sea is their home and not ours. Jaws always gets bad press for giving people a hatred of Sharks, but on the contrary I've known many people that have got into them because of the film. I love Sharks and Jaws. 🦈

I see no reason why a great white could not be in U.K. Waters especially around large populations of seals. It's the same reason there seen here off Massachusetts patrolling along the shores around the seal colonies. Along the California coast too and that's in much colder waters. They have spotters along the beaches and if someone spots a large shark they close the beaches until further notice.

Here in Louisiana my cousin was fishing for bull redfish in the gulf of Mexico at the mouth of the Mississippi river and he pulled a 35 pound red within 10 feet of the boat and a giant fin appeared and bam the fish was cut in half then the shark turned sideways and went away from the boat my cousin said that it was definitely a great white shark and it was 14 feet long comparing it to the boat! It circled the boat a couple times and left! The crazy thing is we have never thought that great white sharks were in the Gulf of Mexico plus no one who fishes down here has ever seen one in Louisiana waters! Now for the past couple of years since they have been tagging the sharks in the Atlantic we have heard on local news that a few have been pinging off the coast of Louisiana and all over the Gulf coast from Texas to Florida! It makes sense though because for years fisherman have been coming here to fish for the monster Blue fin tuna which visit here a few times a year! So add it up if you swim or fish in salt water and anything connected to the ocean you more than likely have great white sharks!!!!!

I was swimming down in Florida with my 7 year old son when these big, to me ( 8 -10 lbs) fish started jumping out of the water followed by a massive swirl about 10 -15' from us. My son looked up & saw a guy dragging a "shape" up the beach. We could see it was a fish he had caught so my boy ran off to see. I went to get some towels in the opposite direction & then walked toward him seeing him sitting at the head of this 10 -12' fish. The American guy didn't know he was there as he was busy sorting something out of his tackle box. I saw a "fin" & shouted at my son to get away from it. I eventually got there &....FUCK ME! it was a BULL shark with a mouth about 2' wide on it! When the guy went to drag it back into the water by it's tail it spun on him like a snake but fortunately didn't connect. Didn't do a lot of swimming after that!

It's a high probability that the Lobourg channel, a deep channel in the bed, in the Dover Strait's (English channel) is the main reason Great White's appear so close to the Solent/Needles deeps area's, linking cold streams in the Atlantic to the North sea, it's simple geography and geology, the abundance in bait shoals, mackerel and herring in these areas due to inshore shallow spawning and holding grounds, there-on attracting bass, cod, ray's and huss, in numbers, the staple food's of larger predators, conger,skate,shark. Probably alway's been a varied large shark patrol zone, possibly more so in year's gone by, the only thing happening here new, is that we are noticing them more (John)

Dawn and dusk preferred times for large sharks to hunt/feed. Tend to swim along the bottom where they are perfectly camouflaged with their dark upper skin, then launch a sudden vertical attack from below on a surface seal-like shape. If not sure, may brush against their intended food source to dislodge some skin, which using their advanced sensory preceptors, will tell the shark whether it is food or not.
