If they tag a med white shark, where do we think it will be tracked to? 🦈 🌏
@Katie-pn2xu

I wonder if the white sharks that are potentially around the west coast are Mediterranean or not? I think, when you look at the migration patterns on the other side of the Atlantic, that any we might get are from the populations around Cape Verde/Canary islands/west Africa coming north at the end of summer instead. Or are they all from the med? I suppose we might be about to find out!

@@Katie-pn2xu I watched a documentary and they've all been DNA tested. Australian Great Whites are closely related to the Med Great whites and the African ones are closely related to the American ones.

If they want to tag Med great white then they have to actually enter the Mediterranean Sea. The Bay of Biscay is not a part of Mediterranean and all leading European shark scientist pretty much agree that Med great white stays in the Med for entire life.

@@banPersieyeah, that’s where I was going really with my comment, wondering if any that are spotted our side of the North Atlantic are coming up from further south in the Atlantic - west Africa, Madeira, Canaries etc, rather than the Mediterranean.

I remember going to Rhodes in Greece a couple of years ago. I spoke to a fisherman over there , and asked him about the presence of great whites in their waters(Mediterranean). He stated that he sees them at least once a week, but they do not go to the media, take pictures, or film them, as it would affect their tourism trade, of which they hugely rely on . He was very descriptive of the great whites, and it was fascinating to hear.

My Grandfather was a gunner in WW2, he was in the battle of El Alemein. He told me 30 odd year ago when I was a teenager in the 80's that after the battle, on the way back, the sharks would follow the boat as they could smell the dead and wounded. He told me the sharks he saw were absolutely massive

Fantastic news. I was on a cruise ship doing the Mediterranean cruise a week ago, and seen plenty of dolphins in the bay of biscay aswell as Mediterranean, i also spotted from our promenade deck a dorsal fin and tail fin, which i assume was a pretty big shark, but i never got a clear sight of it's body from my position, apart from the fins clearly sticking out of the water. Im very much looking forward to oceanserch tagging our great whites here i europe. All the best, take care on the seas.

Here in Spain there have been several sightings the last couple years, which until now, were extremely extremely rare. Also not only great white sharks. Other species aswell. We have witnesed a change in their migration patterns no doubt, so i would not be surprised at all that countries relatively close to our shores would also have experienced the same circunstances. We now have to begin to be aware of this. Good content btw. It is very useful to spread the word. I am kind of surprised to be honest because this last years the waters have warmed, at least here in Spain. Maybe some of their pray have gotten closer to our shores because of the change of temperatures. anyway, be aware out there.

I hope they come to the West Coast of Ireland. Back in the early 2000s I remember seeing an article in Foinse (an Irish language newspaper) in which fishermen off the coast of County Clare claimed that they had seen a Great White. I wish I'd kept it and I can't find it online anywhere...the article, that is, not the shark! 😂 Basking Sharks are in now and a Six Gill shark was spotted off Clare in 2021. There was an Angel Shark recorded off the west coast last year, too. There's lots of seals, including a big colony on the Blasket Islands and we've plenty of dolphins and Porpoises, so it would be worthwhile for a Great White to make the trip. And, yes. You should be on that boat.

I think it's completely plausible that White sharks are ,at the least, occasional visitors to the waters around the UK & possibly Ireland. The water temperature can be just within their range (in summer) Plus they have been recorded in the Bay of Biscay which isn't really that far away as well as the fact there are large Pinniped populations, especially in Scotland.

If they tag one it's going to be fascinating to track its movements. As you've mentioned great whites are more likely occasional visitors to our shores rather than residents so its still pot luck even with a tag in. However, it only takes one animal with a tag to conclusively prove they swim in UK waters. Also, I guess they're going to go where the feeding is good. We have seals...

being where you were at and the distance between the dorsal fin and tail, (approx 8 feet ) makes me think that the shark you witnessed is more kikelyto be a basking shark, which can be seen all around the western isles and northrrn isles of Scotland during the summer months, they are sevond in size onlŷ to the whale shark, and look very similar to the great white when viewed from above. they filter feed off plankton, which they get by swimminga meandering and leisurey path at the surface, and can he watched for many minutes doing this. the basking shark is a member of the classof shark known as the mackerel shark family, which also include the porbeagle, great white, and one of the fastest sharks in the sea, namely the mako shark. and are so sinilar in appearance, they are often mistakenly identified, there was an explosion of shark nu bers in Shetland waters in the early 70s, with hundreds of sharks of many dpecies being caught and landed and put up gor sale, among these, there were many mackerel sharks caught, in fact the most caught were the porbeagle, and mako, but not a single great white, and at a time when the Mediterranean great white population was healthy, and here in the waters around Shetland, there are now at least 3 transient killer whale (Orca) pods active around Shetland, which will decrease substantially, the chances of a great white shark arriving and staying in Shetland waters for very long. ,

I think it’s great. But the areas they will be focusing in the GWS are more sporadic and it will be very unlikely they will find, but could get lucky. They need to head into the Mediterranean, near Sicily, Tunisia, or further east to Turkey. Also most likely I think the majority of GWS in the Mediterranean don’t go close to shore very often. As to where they head. I don’t think South Africa. Because from the tagged South African GWS all only made big migrations in the Indian Ocean.

Well, they would be expecting you to say it was a GW because they could sell the story and add their names to history. The Med to SA is a long way, but then again, the GW's do like to travel that far with no problems. I would say that some of the Med GW's would come up here but I hope to God that they choose the quieter spots unless the GW's aren't bothered that much by shipping noise. Friends of mine, many years ago now, saw a massive shark up here near Banff when they were scuba diving, but they didn't know the species. Porbeagles are fairly common here. If you go on the trip with Osearch, they'll restrict what you can show pretty heavily until the show airs but, I would love to see as much as possible of what you film. Fishing friends have seen sharks with their teeth firmly gripping the cod end of the nets as they hauled them in. The sharks would drop off but none of them knew which species they were - they wouldn't care anyway; some of them catch whales in their nets and complain about the smell of their breath and annoyance at having to release them. I'm confused by the 'fin', in one scene it was turning sharply and later just 'moving' through the water - unless it was just a separate clip but it did look like a seal.

Interesting to get some data. I’m inclined to think unlikely to find one, eg a Mediterranean shark would have to sneak past and compete with a resident Scottish orca pod, and the pod near Gib Straits that were setting about yachts. Either way some data would be welcome. I wonder if they are tagged in UK waters, if that would increase the estimated worldwide population numbers?

If they find them in the North East Atlantic off Ireland, my guess would be they migrate North along the continental shelf in summer and South through the Bay of Biscay towards the coast of Morocco in winter.

You've more chance of seeing the Loch Ness Monster. I don't think you're going to find a GWS anywhere were there are not large populations of whales on migration or resident.

@@rabadabadoo491 When you've seen the great whales on migration up the east and west coasts of Australia you realise that the relatively small number around the UK coast just aren't going to attract large white sharks. I spent just 3 weeks in Margaret River, Australia and spotted a large GWS from the shore, but I've spent months all around the Scottish coast and only ever seen basking sharks and one minke, although I was lucky enough to see that sperm whale which turned up in Oban harbour. I hope GWS are found in British waters, but I just think it's an extremely remote chance.

@kw8757 minke's were a pretty regular occourance during the summer months when I worked in the North Sea. And was lucky enough to see what I think may have been a pair of humpbacks one year although I wasn't really up on sea mammals so not sure about identification. Cheers

All that tech to find where Sharks go. Where there's seals they'll be sharks. Those big fishes get hungry.
@nickmitsialis
@nickmitsialis 3 ай бұрын
The big question is why they are NOT off the UK--it has seals; it's cooler water and the gulf stream brings warmer water seasonally 'just in case'; BUT then again, Bay of Biscay has recorded only ONE ("count 'em, One") white shark caught and it was a juvenile. On the other hand, of the French and Spanish Med, and the Spanish and Portuguese Atlantic, white sharks are definitely 'on'. Makes me wonder where these sharks come from===up from South Africa? From the North American East Coast? It seems some OSEARCH tracking has shown that some head for the mid Atlantic ridge--they look like they're making a beeline for 'old bighty' but then they veer off before they cross that feature. THere MUST be some sort of magnetic track they're following.

We've got lots of seals around the UK, but not a single confirmed sighting of a GWS, so it's simply not true that where there are seals there are white sharks. I'll come back to these comments at the end of this summer to confirm yet again no confirmed sightings of GWS, if I'm wrong I'll eat my boat.
@nickmitsialis
@nickmitsialis 2 ай бұрын
@@kw8757 No you ARE quite correct. I'm just puzzled as to why this is the case. But then again, the closest one is that one caught in Bay of Biscay nearly a century ago. AFAIK white sharks show up off of the Azores, the Canarys, the Cape Verdes and other Spanish/Portuguese Islands in the Atlantic. None of those places are known for seals, and the white sharks in the Med sure don't have seals as a staple. In any case,. the Gulf Stream brings blues and makos close to The British Isles, so there has to be SOME reason aren't 'regulars'.

kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rZObZJx-2L-XhIE.html&ab_channel=BBCEarth It was interesting that there are no official sightings. Yet we can see that the BBC saw a white shark. Does Tourism play a part in keeping the sightings under wraps. I had a friend in the Navy who saw a great white of the coast of Scotland.

@@happyandblessed5640 The BBC did not see a GWS, you didn't think the video dramatisation was actual footage did you? The divers in the boat had cameras with them yet failed to get a single picture above or below the surface. This evidence is nothing more than anecdotal.
