Here it is! The 700th video! My most favourite and rarest logo combo ever to enter my collection. Converted into scope ratio these are the original logos from the Australian cinema release (and subsequent video) of The Last Starfighter. This is Starscreen, CEL's short-lived theatrical distribution arm. I have done some extensive research and this is what I found.
Formed in late 1983 it started distributing foreign and art-house films before inking a co-distribution deal with Greater Union. In its short time it distributed fairly average films, with its biggest successes being The Last Starfighter and The Killing Fields. The deal was suddenly suspended mid-1985 with Greater Union citing a shortage of cinemas in Sydney while they were refurbishing their flagship George St multiplex, but rumors swirled that GU were unhappy with the quality of most the films CEL were acquiring.
The final straw came from their final release in 1986 when they distributed the Steve Martin comedy "All of Me". CEL planned to release sell-through tapes (of which CEL were pioneers of) while the film was still in cinemas, resulting in a boycott by the three biggest chains in Australia (GU, Village & Hoyts). CEL had a conflict of interest between the ambitions of their video business and their fledgling theatrical label and decided to concentrate on videos instead.
