What is Virtual Super Resolution?

What is Virtual Super Resolution (VSR) well it's actually one of many features in AMD's adrenalin software. Virtual Super Resolution is the exact opposite of Radeon Super Resolution and makes things harder to run but there is a use fore it. So let's discuss.

VSR is the excact opposite of FSR. It downscales from a larger Resolution and basically does the same as Super Sampling Anti Aliasing. Its the best quality AA you can get. It smoothes edges and textures alike, give you a much clearer and stabilizes image. FSR however upscales from a lower resolution as your monitor to save up performance, speeding up your FPS. VSR will eat FPS as tradeoff for higher imiage quality.

@@m0lDaViA That is true - you can have a 1920 x 1080 Monitor and set the game up to run in 3840 x 2160. Of course it has to be scaled down since your monitor only has 1920 x 1080 pixels. So you calculate basically UHD-Resolution for a FHD-Device. But the Image quality improves alot. Best method of all AAs out there. Less flicker, less aliasing even on stuff like foliage....but yeah...expensiv.

I turned on VSR in my Radeon settings and then ran Hitman at 4k + Fsr 2.0 and actually got a superior visual result than just 1080p and no FSR plus it ran 50-60fps on my aging system! Edit: I forgot to say that I'm using a 1080p tv but it also worked on a 4k monitor minus the VSR with the same results. Specs are AMD FX 8350 (stock), 16gb DDR3 RAM, and a RX 480 8g (-20% power draw for temps) if any of that matters.

I was interested in trying to use RSR & VSR together, or FSR & VSR with my 7900XTX. One of the things I am really going to miss about my 3080 Ti is DLDSR 4K down to 1440p, and DLSS Quality (1440p base resolution) with the game set to 4K. It was miles ahead of anything native. My 7900XTX is coming today, and I'm doing some research ahead of it. It's a jump in performance over my 3080 Ti enough that I could probably run 5120x2880 in some titles, but the nice 4k to 1440p downsample will be missed. Although I heard VSR is far superior to regular DSR, so maybe I'm worried about nothing.

@@Mrhandyhitman Enable Virtual Super Resolution in the Adrenaline software. Then, once you're in game, you'll see resolutions that are higher than your monitor's native resolution available. So I would set the game to 4K (1440p screen), and then enable FSR, XESS, or TSR to whatever quality I want. Right now I'm replaying Horizon Zero Dawn 4K with FSR Quality (120 fps), and it looks so much better than the games normal (terrible) AA. I don't think you can use RSR with VSR, at the same time. RSR is also a step down from FSR 1, so I'm not that interested in it anyway.

I should specify that I replaced DLSS with FSR 2.?, rather than the game's FSR 1.

I'm using VSR on my Lenovo Yoga 14" OLED 1080p, it's very nice to be able to run this at 4k all the time. Both in and out of games.

Yes and it make the resolution significantly better in games. You can go 4K on a 1080P monitor and it looks good even without being native resolution.

I keep getting my FSR mixed up with my VSR because of RSR; so I would like to know why FSR is not listed in the AMD Driver (Oct 2022 version) for my RX6900XT, even though VSR is there along with RSR, of which I have only one on; because I still don't know if any two of the three will work together [or if the three will work together] or if I should only use one of them at a time. Maybe AMD think gaming is a full-time job figuring all this out by ourselves; because there is no indication in AMD software about any of this.

The best use for this for me is to eliminate bottlenecks on my PC. I have a 13400f and 3060ti with 1080p 165hz monitors. I am upgrading the gpu to a 7800xt and all the benchmarks ive seen show a clear CPU bottleneck. By using VSR , ill run all games at 1440p with VSR enable which will eliminate the bottlenecks and still allow me to run my 1080p monitors. When games start to get more difficult to run , I can turn VSR off and run 1080p natively to use the full horsepower of the 7800xt

Perfect for mid-low range laptops with low resolution monitors like my Radeon Ryzen 5 3500 1080p monitor at 3200 x 1800 . Amazing when I play HLL at 720 p . Great smoothness and no lag.

Is vsr anywhere close to Dldsr? Dldsr plus dlss makes sense at times

VSR is "not smart" equvivalent of DLDSR. It just squishes higher resolution to display resolution. And on DLSS side... i tested VSR with FSR 2.0 and it does a good job as a nice AA - 2k resolution from VSR geting FSR "upsampling" and then squishes to 1080p. It looks rather nice.
