wow, people played so differently back then. Incredible. By briefly looking at it I wouldnt even have recognized the game to be high-level at all.

29:12 what if black hane on top (11-4)? I think either crosscut 12-4 or bump 13-3 can give a sente turn, but despite bad shape black seems to be able to hold.

Yeah, the hane on top is better locally. I can't see a reason not to. In the heat of a game, there are many times you can't see what on-lookers can.

I'm back 9 months later by chance and I'm a lot stronger than I used to be. The hane on top seems better locally as it gives black a better shape for an eye, but it lets white completely cut off the corner group. Playing down like the actual game lets you connect to the corner which, considering the game is a draw, was probably one of the major factors in the mid-late game. Hell, if we consider komi (since white goes first, black would have it here), saving that corner group would've won him the game.

the game is very impressive, but possibly not a good teaching tool 18:12 continuing in the corner seems weird the left side is big white can consider to play there first get a sente and return to the corner the way he creates influence is very stylistic and unrestrained but from a modern go theory perspective it may not be that good

That move (White 16-18 at the lower right) is actually one of LeelaZero's favourites. Remember too, as was mentioned, that the ethos of the time was to aim for big margin win, so I think it kind of makes sense at this point to reduce Black corner territory and keep the aji active for bullying Black bottom group later on in the game, and trust that you can (with Huang Longshi level reading activated) still murder Black in the left side with the help of the influence even after giving him sente to play there first.

I get what you mean, but you underestimate the potential of the bottom right. The left is huge, but it's not as if playing there first will guarantee your moyo surviving anyway. If that last push hadn't happened, black could've gotten a significant amount of points out of that corner and may have turned the game around in his favor. You really have to weigh your options in that situation. You mentioned gaining sente eventually and coming back, but there's absolutely no guarantee that'll happen in the order you hope. Based on your reaction, there's not even any telling if you'd allow black to fix his corner in sente too. If you think what you can get out of playing on the side will be worth more than the entire corner black gets otherwise, then play there. But if you're even slightly unsure, it's better to gouge out what's in front of you. White ended up winning anyway and estimations put the difference at ~20-25 points so you can't say it's a mistake. As a game for teaching weaker players? Not many games of this level will be useful. There's a massive gap in understanding of what is and isn't important that can't be bridged just by watching the strongest players in the world place stones regardless of ancient or modern go theory.
