What I really like in this video is that you kinda take us for the ride too, showing us that even very experienced mixers still try out new things and just follow their curiosity to check if something actually sounds better. This is testament to a good mixer who doesn't copypaste their template onto everything, making each band they mix sound alike. It's all about mixing to the style, and that often means trying out completely new tricks.

Seeing this finally made sense of how the technique works! I remember trying it out years ago and it didn't make sense until I realized from watching this that even a difference in amplitude can diminish the phase cancellation. So when the compressor causes that difference to be the way the compressor makes a very precise gate!

Incredibly helpful tip! I've been trying to mix drums using only a two input interface, recorded a combination overhead/snare to one channel, this trick allowed me to copy the overhead/snare track and isolate the snare using the ReaComp trick plus the frequency sliders at the bottom to get rid of literally ALL of the kick bleed and most of the cymbals. Amazing!
@mageprometheus
@mageprometheus 4 жыл бұрын
You can do it in Reaper without track duplicating in a single FX chain. Use the JS Channel Router /polarity to swap polarity and move the audio to channels 3+4, reaComp goes after on channels 1+2, then use the JS mixer to mix channels 1+2, 3+4.

@@anaayres6349 Yes Reapers FX routing takes a bit of experimenting until it clicks. Channel router with polarity: input:1+2/polarity mode: invert both/ output:3+4/output mode:replace Click on the plug-in pin connector button (4 in 4 out) check input channel 1 goes to JS input 1, input channel 2 to JS input 2 (so reapers audio channels 1+2 of the 64 available on every track! are connected to the plugin virtual input pins.) If there are not enough channels showing the tiny + - buttons can be used. check JS outputs 1- 4 got to channels 1-4. No other connections. 8x to 1x mixer: click 16 in 2 out button. Input channels 1-4 got to inputs 1L 1R 2L 2R Output L to channel 1 output R to channel 2. No other connections. With the faders for ch1+2 and 3+4 set to 0dB, the output is null. Hey, so I ended up starting with the effects duplicated on the out of phase channel, but ended up bussing them with no effects other than the flipped phase channel with the ReaComp and did the rest of the processing on the bus channel and it worked perfectly. This way it's using the effects one time and I don't have to worry about messing the phase up if I decide to modify the effects later down the line or if I want to use it as part of a template. Thanks to you and Warren for the trick. Really saved my ass.

Neat trick and it even used nulling which will always be one of my favorite techniques to do weird stuff. A trick i've learned is to stop trying to remove bleed and noise with gates completely but approach it all as attenuator instead of 100% defeat. BY far most often 12dB or even 6dB drop might be all you need. Noise or bleed that pumps in and out can be more noticeable than mere "turn it down a bit". Same goes for a lot of stuff, the 100% option is not always the best, and often just taking "most of it" away gets you to the best end result. Harkens back to the "good old days" when our gear was crap and you just could not fix everything perfectly.

Thrash is alive and well and also tends to be in the “higher” tunings like Eb and D and I’d be interested to see how you setup recording for guitars without the thudding low strings and more trem picking on an E. Or would it defer at all? Either way as a thrash guy trying to record I’d love to see how you handle the non-downtuned guitars both during recording and during mixing.

@vodalavoid
@vodalavoid 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I mostly don't understand it in this context. The phase canceling makes sense, and then when the compressor is on one track it makes sense that the difference between the two signals is what I'm hearing - the compressor creating that difference. But I don't get how that tosses out the bleed audio since that's compressed along with everything else. What am I missing?
@jrclarkbass
@jrclarkbass 4 жыл бұрын
That's really interesting that that happens that way. It makes sense in the analog world that when things are opposite phase wise that they canceled each other out. That's physics and it's science. The one thing that baffles me, just thinking about it, is what happens inside the box and that data stream? Does phase cancellation happen in the digital realm because of physics or because it's mimicking physics? I suppose I could Google this and make myself smart but then again what fun would that be? 😁 I'm a recent subscriber and really enjoy all the videos you've been making. Some of these are hilarious! Excellent work!
@corym8374
@corym8374 4 жыл бұрын
One cool thing with this trick that you can do too is to put a hipass before the compressor and it will only phase cancel everything above your filter. Everything filtered out will no longer phase cancel the main track. You can adjust the filter so its only phase canceling the cymbals and leaving the low end alone if you find this trick is taking things a little too far with the hard gated sound. Sorry if I explained this poorly lmao. Fuck you Glen!

I definitely need to try this. Problem is, I always like more sustain from my snare tracks, so when it opens up, the cymbals come through. So what I’ve been doing is using a multi-band compressor and using it to gate only at around 5k and above with a fast release, then using a normal gate with a slower release so the note of the snare can still come through more. Thoughts on this gating process?

Hey man, Beginnerquestion here. How do i run a Hybrid System? How is the Routing out of the DAW into analog Gear, Pedals ect and back into the Software? What do i need and why? I'm on Cubase, but i guess it kinda works the same in any DAW to some point.

Would you use drum leveller before this so the threshold stays the same?

how do you guys use this technique in the processing? You double the raw tracks and add effects in the one which appears? or does it only work in the end of the chain?

Any opinions on how the Infinity strip compares to similar offerings from Slate, Waves, UAD etc? They claim zero latency but would that depend on interface, CPU etc?

how are you getting this layout with the effects above the channel mixer? I'm new to reaper. I'll search your other videos

how are you gettting your average levels hovering around zero on master bus. with my mixes i always seem to be hitting plus 6 after ived used limiter to get things 0. ill get pulses regularly that move the vu meter to plus 6 rather than just floating at 0

Could you use gated reverb on drums for a metal application? I'm not sure if it's been done before or not so I'm kinda curious 🥴

depends on what you call metal....the 80s "metal" bands did a lot. as far as modern stuff, i think people tend to use triggers and samples more if they want that sound, but i could be wrong. Black Tongue has a huge drum sound, but im 90% sure they're using triggers
