In today's video I'm going to show you what I consider to be the most effective and efficient way to store mashed potatoes in the freezer. I'm breaking out the trusty FoodSaver vacuum seal machine for this one, plus we're going to do a complete side-by-side experiment to show the difference between freezing plain mashed potatoes vs. freezing potatoes that have been mixed with butter and cream.

After searching a number of approaches to extend the potato life and not having to dispose of ones that have deteriorated, this would seem like the fastest and easies way to get 100% utilization of all the potatoes purchased. Thank for your Great video. Greetings from Ontario, Canada.

I have frozen mashed potatoes with butter, salt and pepper. The texture is the same as before freezing. I would recommend you hold the pepper and add it later as the flavor fades in the freezer. I do this every spring when my winter potatoes start to sprout.

BTW? If you roll the top of your vac bag down a couple inches before filling it, you'll keep it clean (for the sealing) and make it more rigid (for filling) You can also warm those bags using boiling water.

They have a suction cup with like clips that hold the bag open. You may try looking at one of those. It does help a lot when you’re dealing with liquids and I know potatoes aren’t really liquid but you know what I mean stuff that is it has give to it.

To fill your bags easier, put them into a big tall drinking glass or clean used yogurt container or something that matches the size of your freezer bag, and pull the edge of the bag over the outside rim of the container you use. This is also a good trick when filling a piping bag. I presume I am the only one that likes my mashed potatoes on the dryer and fluffier side and not soupy like a very thick white sauce.

I like your video because it relates to instant potatoes my wife makes instant potatoes at times and they get really gummy sometimes so that be like not putting any milk cream or butter in before you freeze. I just like to know that this works so I can get to work. Also I guess when I take them out of the freezer I would probably start microwaving them right away so they soften up and then maybe cut a hole in the air can get out I would now and I would not want to wait a whole day for them to thaw

Hmm. I flash froze leftover mashed potatoes with cream and butter in silicone molds about the size of muffin pans prior to sealing but it came out separating and very runny. I must’ve used a lot of cream in the potatoes. I think next time I’ll try reserve some plain potato before adding the cream and see if I prefer that.

Thanks Lisette. As far as food safety, it will be fine indefinitely (as long as it always stays frozen throughout). Though, after some time, like most frozen foods, you would probably start to notice a breakdown in texture and probably taste. For me, I generally try to use them within about 6 months.

Love it. Different question (Also asked on a dated video.) How do you prep dry goods like rice, noodles and dry beans for Mason jar vacume sealing for both long and short term storage? Vacume Mason jars sealing is my preferred method for both in which I would like to try. Do you freeze for 14 days to kill bugs/bug eggs in orginal packaging then dry in the oven on a cookie sheet for a period of time to remove any moisture before putting into Mason Jars to vacume seal? Do you then also put in a moisture absorber? Or Could you freeze in vacume sealed jars with a moisture absorber or is one needed? 🤷‍♀️
@GreatLakesPrepping

I don't ever freeze glass. I've read that it is ok in certain circumstances, but I never feel comfortable doing it. For rice and grains, I put it all in a sealed, food-grade bucket and freeze the entire bucket for a couple days. Then before opening the sealed bucket, I let everything come fully back to room temperature, just in case any condensation from the air would form on my frozen rice (or whatever). Once it's room temp, I then just transfer to jars and seal. No oven, no moisture absorbers.
