In this project I will be showing you how to use the Home Assistant software in order to create an intruder alarm system for your home. The system will basically detect if the door gets opened without permission and then it will send out a notification to your smartphone. Along the way I will show you how to use a Raspberry Pi and ESP8266 in order to properly utilize the Home Assistant software. Let's get started!

I really enjoyed this video, and agree that home assistant + esphome makes a great combination. I have water tank sensors using esphome, ultrasonic distance sensors to measure water level, and little OLED displays. But, for this application it is probably overkill. Xiaomi Aqara zigbee door sensors last years on a single battery charge, are tiny, and interface to home assistant using either a small zigbee usb stick or external zigbee box. They are reliable, and trivial to deploy. They are even used on Aircon Louvers to feedback on/off state. You could do the holiday switch thing as a virtual switch within home assistant (or just disable the notification automation).

In the UK some of the electrical suppliers will give you a two part device that monitors your usage. One part is a current clamp that you clamp around the feed to your meter. It transmits by radio to a LCD display unit that can be in you kitchen or wherever. I think people get bored after a while and find no use for this gadget. You might be able to buy on on eBay. We had one where I work and it was discarded fairly soon.

I managed to get OTA working! I think the purpose of OTA is to push firmware over the wi-fi network so you don't need to use esphome-flasher every time. So, no cables! But the ESP device will try to register itself as "name.local" and homeassistant will need to be able to resolve it (try ping first). In my case it worked surprisingly easily! Thank you for you videos!

@@gosth64 Yeah, but the problem is if you have a working system nobody wants to set it up again (and upgrades don't always go smoothly) because MS is too stupid to figure out how a package manager should work and we got their half-baked store instead, even though it's more effort I've actually started to switch over to Linux using a laptop since I can do most of the things I want in a web browser and for any windows only software or games I got an HDMI switcher, I kinda like it but my only problem is I also need a usb switcher as I have a Logitech gaming mouse which means the extra buttons don't work nor do automatic profiles.

Perhaps they watch it on double speed, and noticed either there is no alert on the switch being disabled, or that reed switches through a wooden door could be bypassed with magnetic visualization film to locate the magnet position -- a few dollars on amazon -- and a powerful magneton the other side of the door as it was opened?) A better solution would be a lock, and if you feel you need some sensing on the door, perhaps a few ultrasonic range finders on the other side of the room. If any of them change more than a small amount, you'll know someone is messing with your room. (Using just one might be easy to bypass if someone took the door off the hinges. ) An advantage of using multiple is that you'd also be able to tell if someone walks in front of the sensors.

Great video! This is something I have been considering building for a while. I have been using Home Assistant for a while though, and I was thinking of using the phone integration, and it's means of telling if you are home or not, to do the job of that switch you added. That way I won't get notifications while I am at home (although I could set it to allow notifications if the door opens after I have triggered my bedtime routine, so i know if someone comes in while I sleep!), but I also can't forget to arm the system when I leave the house (I always take my phone with me). :-)

This must have been said in some other comment but I can't find it so here I go. You can use home assistant presence detection to enable disable the alarm. For example you can have the alarm disabled as soon as your phone connects to your home wifi and enabled when it disconnects.

What I did was to add a motion sensor inside, close to the door. It activates the hallway lights but also if it's triggered then I don't receive a notification when the door is opened. So, if you are inside and you open the door, there is no alarm. If you open the door from the outside, then you get a notification. No need for a switch 😉

7:10 Note that if you put ANYTHING onto the internet, it's highly recommended to setup a reverse proxy which tells traffic where to go, the reason to use it is because you only need two ports exposed 80 and 443, everything else can remain secure behind your router and more importantly it limits any attacks to your network to just the reverse proxy itself rather than your server or other devices, even better if you use containers such as docker and you can even use Cloudflare for free to obfuscate your IP address from potential threats. Also, thanks to NGINX Proxy Manager, this was made super easy to do fairly recently, I've been using it for my home appliances such as Nextcloud and I love it. Edit: Oh yeah one other benefit is that you can provide anything with SSH which doesn't have it built in, like say a personal wiki or an ESP8266/32.

@@incxbxs True, a vpn is the best option for personal use but it isn't a good solution for everyone, for example if I wanted to share files from Nextcloud with my parents they wouldn't know how to use a VPN or if I wanted a private chat server then it would make it even harder to convince anyone to use it.
