Greed/Ling: Greed may not be good, but it's not so bad, either. You humans think greed is just for money and power! But everyone wants something they don't have. Ling Yao. "If you turn your back on something you wanted, then you don't deserve to call yourself 'Greed'!" "A king exists for his people, without subjects rulers can not exist."

GreedLing is a beautiful example of how anything can be either moral or immoral. Virtue can become sinful and sin can become virtuous, these desires we use don’t define us, but it’s instead how we use them that do. To see others as inferior or to simply have confidence in one’s self, that is pride. To want hurt others or to destroy the systems that hurt people, that is wrath. To want it all, whether for better or worse, that is greed.

Yes. The 7 deadly sins, or capital sins, in my understanding, are not always evil (or morally wrong), but rather they are traits intrinsic to humanity that are "dangerous" and _could_ lead you to sin if you aren't careful about it - really, really careful. They can't be gotten rid of entirely and are to be heavily controlled and tempered. Greed/Ling portrays this with the intense back-and-forth self-reflection that Greed and Ling do. Ling tempers Greeds... greed.

I believe in terms of Ling and Bradley’s conversation on kings, there’s not a king who hasn’t stepped on the backs of their people but there is a clear difference between a king who steps on the back of his people because he can and a king who sees that as a last resort.

I always thought the reason why they had such an influence on each other was due to them both having a "want". Greed wanted the world while Ling wanted to protect his home. At one point Greed even points out the similarities in their philosophy. They were similar enough to reflect on each other. I suppose in some ways they were a dark/light mirror to each other. Greed was Ling's dark mirror and Ling was Greed's light mirror. I think the similar but differences in their philosophy set them up for success in challenging their own ideas to be better people.

I heard about FMA by a friend, The fact that ling emphasizes "GREED" who is Avarice and someone can just "Take" the life of your friends from you so easily, is poetic. Like, yeah you are Greed and etc but this guy is just breaking your stuffs and you don't say nothing about it? Amazing.

When you know that Greed always wanted friends, you understand better how his ability makes sense. The guy doesn't want to lose anything, and friends are the one thing you can have and not fully control yet. The one thing that can still hurt you once you obtain it. So Greed was shielding himself from that : when Bradley killed his chimera companions, he was pissed but pretended it was only because they were his possession. He was shielding from the feels and only learned to let his guard down by having - litteraly - a friend coming to him behind his shield. Only like that could Greed obtain what he really wanted. And he confirmed his sincerity to this new friendship by sacrifying himself for it, which is the most selfness action you can make. That proved he had obtained true friendship and wasn't shielding away anymore from the one thing he always desired. I swear every little detail of this show makes sense in the grand scheme of the story. Such a masterpiece.

It's one of those anime where you can rewatch and still find something new. A hidden nuance you didn't notice before cause you didn't look at it from the same perspective. I think that's what makes it so attractive. It has various themes, fleshed out characters, and underlying implications that you really have to pay attention to in order to understand the full picture of what she was trying to convey with her story. Theres also actual references to alchemical history which is just next level tbh.

We are born with greed in its purest form, wants and needs being equal. We want warmth. We want to be held. We want to be fed. We want shelter. We want resources. We want attention. Without any of these we do not live, we do not thrive, the passions we come to cultivate either become desire we can move to obtain and can be read as "greedy" or we stew in them, do nothing or cheap imitations of it and become an swarming mass of "envy".

This makes me think of the difference between jealousy and envy. Jealousy comes from a good desire to keep your own safe, to protect what is yours. Envy on the other hand is to desire what others have. Although they get muddled in English they are nearly opposites. Jealousy is love, just like greed is hope

Using the analogy of Lingreed, would it be plausible that the other vices have positive aspects by themselves and not when they take on their virtues forms?
@eddiee9147
@eddiee9147 10 ай бұрын
Well I’d like to think greed is a vice that can make someone highly successful. Most of the most successful people always have the desire to want things more than the other person and was not concerned with how they had achieved or how much success they had tasted (or eaten). Not wanting to rest on your past laurels and never being satisfied. Gluttony is like greed but with actually using the things that you’ve been greedy with
@kaneobscurum6016
@kaneobscurum6016 9 ай бұрын
Absolutely they can. I always liked FMA framing the seven sins as "desires" that can ruin a person if taken to excess. But they are an innate and necessary part of the human condition. We have greed being hopeful and a desire to protect all you have, regardless of how much control you have over them. But we also can have: (and please forgive the tangent, I've spent a lot of time thinking about this over the years) Wrath - the enactor of justice, the righteous fury that brings low those whom destroy all around them. Envy - recognizing in others the things you lack and (possibly) the desire to improve yourself to gain them Pride - acknowledgement of everything thing you are and have done, giving one a standard they hold themselves to and strive to meet as well as being able to recognize a job well done so one can move on to other projects. Also is a feeling of accomplishment and fulfillment upon doing well. Gluttony - the very essence of over indulgence, but can also mean choosiness and a standard of "must be this good before I accept it" In positive lights such excess can be gathered and then spread to those around you. And used sparingly it can create pockets of excessively enjoyable times amidst an otherwise hard and interesting life Lust - finding indulgence and pleasure in all things, loving oneself and others around you enough to take pleasure in every moment. It can make the mundane enjoyable, and the wonderful spectacular. And lastly Sloth - quite literally the desire to rest and recharge. It's also an aspect of self that let's you stop worrying about what you can't control. If you can't change it, don't put your energy into a futile effort and don't waste brain power worrying. Instead realize there are smaller, simpler things you can do to help things elsewhere and by extension, might actually help in small ways with the big problem you can't fix. These are all I've thought about, and I'm sure there are other, better examples out there.

I did not expect, however, to not only get sucked in and mesmerized but to also have my world view rocked to it's core. I can never see greed as truly black and white again. There has been a nuance awakened in what I originally saw as the worst part of life, in my least favorite part of life.

Even though in both versions he's a homunculus. Something that claims to be superior and above humans, he's always been the most human. Everyone wants something, and they'll do whatever it takes to get what they want. Beit human or homunculus. And it doesn't matter if it's one of the Seven Deadly Sins, greed can also be seen as a virtue. Want to protect and provide for your loved ones? That's greed. Want to get ripped and get the ladies with your muscles? That's greed. Want to get money and Influence on social media? That's greed. Want to get that new bugatti? That's greed. Greed may not be the deadliest sin out of the seven like Pride or Envy. But it's the most human. Everyone wants something.

I'm surprising myself, but I have to sympathize with Greed. As an emotion, greed is a powerful motivator, because unlike wrath which is wild and chaotic, greed is entirely focused. We only call it a sin because people can be greedy for what society deems undesirable. Ling and Greed's story is all about the wants and sometimes avarice can motivate us into the other sins, Gluttony, Lust and Sloth in particular. To allow wants to become needs can be viewed as a bad thing, but is it really so bad to want something to hope for, to want love, or that want to not be lonely anymore?
