The repetitive writing from the Illias wil also be in the Odyssea. It stems from oral tradition where performars (in Greek "aoidoi")would travel from place to place and recite the stories. However, they improvised every time and changed it a little bit every time. Poetry at the time was made on "metre", a specific rhtyhm or cadance. Therefore the improvising took a lot of skill as they needed to fit it into that rhtyhm perfectly without hesitation. To make it a little easier on themselves, they had memorized set phrases that work within the rhythm. That's why things are being phrased in the exact same way over and over again.

Yeah, I find it fascinating and you can also see that in folktales that would have originated in telling tales to children before they eventually were written down 😊

If I could make some suggestions. Indie author M.M. Kin has written several retelling of classic Greek myths: 1. Seeds- a 3 volume reimagining of the tale Persephone. Set in ancient Greece(Hellas), it paints Demeter & the gods as very human while keeping their “godliness” in tact with depictions that fit the era & narrative. Demeter is often viewed as overprotective, this story gives some validation to i why. Persephone takes center stage narrative eise, blossoming into the fully fledged Queen of the Dead under Hades’ guidance. 2. Worthy of Love- Tgis takes a look at the relationships of Hephaestus, their effects on him & how finds love & returns it to the people involved. Much like the last numblber, the gods are quite human in their behavior ( especially Aphrodite), which adds to the enjoyment. 3. Khithomos- This could be viewed as a “prequel” to Seeds but only in the sense of both having Hades as a central figure. Set during the Titan War, it shows the forming Hellenistic(Greek) myth & its gods. In particularly, the story focuses on how Hades came into his role as God of the Underworld. Hope these intrest you.

I love Greek Retellings, I've actually done two videos reading them! Yeah, Silence of the Girls annoyed me bc it didn't really feel like it lived up to what I was promised? It didn't seem like it actually focused on the women as individuals-- more just as victims of the men. I loved Clytemnestra by Costanza Casati and after that, have been more intrigued by Daughters of Sparta and Elektra. I want a great Medusa retelling that flips the original story, but was let down by Stone Blind.

Yea, it didn't do as much as I had hoped it would, but still good for covering the basics. So pleased you like Clytemnestra! Ive been hearing alot of mixed things about Stone Blind, I will still try it but im not in any rush

Hi Nat. I’m so pleased I stumbled upon your comment. You may be interested in my Medusa retelling called ‘Pharmakides’. The story follows Medusa from the sea into the stars. But what makes it unique? Birds narrate the entire story. Each chapter is narrated by a different bird. Also, it is not like recent Medusa retellings which cite Ovid’s story beat for beat. It is a unique plot based upon the deep esoteric truths behind the symbol of Medusa. Happy reading!

A thousand ships is on my TBR, but I don't know that I will enjoy the "short story" aspect. Daughters of Sparta sounds interesting. I really want to read Stone Blind and I haven't heard anyone talk about it! Medusa is a character I would like to read more about. I find that I tend to avoid greek mythology (it intimidates me a bit), but when I pick it up I tend to enjoy it. Great video! I hope you do an updated one next year!

Yea the short story aspect plays a rather large part, though it is a good intro into the trojan war. Glad you enjoyed it!

I have loved mythology since I could read, but my favorite is Greek mythology. I have almost every Natalie Haynes book, but haven't read them, I am getting there. I love all of Madeline Miller's books and wish she'd come out with more. Jennifer Saint is definitely a new favorite since I have read both of her books and am currently waiting for her newest to arrive on Saturday. I adored Rosie Hewlett's Medusa because finally we get her background. I live Athena, but she's not always justified in her ways and is flawed like the rest if the Gods. Claire North has a book called Ithaca which is about Penelope waiting for Odysseus. I haven't read it yet, but it intrigued me. Also, Stephen Fry has books about the myths, heroes, and one just qbout Troy. I have the one and it has some funny lines in it, but he does tell about the myths in a way people might find amusing and understandable. If you want to get to the heart of the myths and the book I read from when I got older...lol...I was 10 years old when I first read it, but It's Edith Hamilton's book about Greek mythology. I would like to point out if you have never read anything about the Greeks that if you see Herakles, yes, that is Hercules because the Romans stole the myths off the Greeks and changed almost everyone's name. Hercules is the Roman name while Herakles is the Greek name. I don't want anyone to get confused like me when I was a kid and I couldn't look it up because this was before the internet...lol...had to read about it in another book. 😊💕💕💕💕 I hope everyone enjoys not only retellings of Greek mythology, but others as well like fairy tales or even the Disney movies.

Yes, i love both mythology retellings and fairytale/folklore retellings. They are some of my favourites to read. Ithica I do want to get. I agree that we need more Madeline Miller books 😅 Also, yes, I have read about the names being adapted for Romans, I saw that in Ovids work 😊

Cassandra, Ariadne, Pandora and Atalanta are my favourite mythological women. "Pandora's Box" just has a better ring to it than "Pandora's Jar" 🐢 (tortoises are sacred to Hermes so have a lil guy)

Great vlog, I loved Song of Achilles, Electra and Pandora. I love the stories surrounding the historic legends. I also loved the film Troy. I would like to read about Medusa. I’m so pleased the females of history are being given a voice, let’s face it men think they have all the ideas but it is actually the women who are often the one who get men to do what is best without the men realising this. 🤣🤣 🏛️🏺
