Another great video! I frickin loved Green Beret on the Spectrum. Yes, it was hard, but that made it more satisfying when you completed the whole game. The panic that ensued during the final level when you had to jump and duck the flame throwers was intense. But to complete the game was fantastic. The only feeling to better it for me was the one and only time I completed Batman (‘86 Ocean version). I have to mention the Top Trump Horror cards on your wall. Nice! I have both of the original sets in their original, beat up and cracked plastic cases. Cost me silly money on eBay about 20 years ago, before they were re-issued. Death always scared the shit out of me as a kid!

I'd defected from the speccy to the old beige breadbin by the time Green Beret came out, remember it being hugely fun to play, but never got past the third stage. I just went back to playing Jeff Minter's sublime "mini-game-'em-up" Batalyx, (with its wonderful 'adaptive' difficulty - he has always been ahead of the curve). Thanks for the great vid!

Youve pinged another memory again lol. Back when Green Beret was released into the Arcades i used to work for Blakemores cash and carry in Walsall around the 1980s. There used to be a cricket indoor pavilion back then just accross the way, they were all the rage and they used to have many different Arcade games in there. I used to play in my dinner hour with a manager from Blakemores called Stuart Atkins. The games i remember were Jailbreak which was incredibly hard, Kungfu master and Green Beret which i both managed to 1CC. As they say practice makes perfect and me and my mate would constantly longplay them as they were more of pattern type games. I miss those days seeing all the new releases coming through the door. The Arcade is a lot easier than the C64 version by quite a bit. Not really played the Spectrum version but the longplay machine Mark from 20th Century gaming has completed them both. Both the Spectrum and C64 are superb conversions and I'd recommend to play either. As for the Amstrad 😊 Great video again mate 👍

Maybe the first full price game I bought for ZX. As a kid it was really hard so didn't play it much. Only got to stage two a few times.

I was a CPC owner back in the day, and I bought a Compilation that included Green Beret... Now, I was never good at the arcade game but I did enjoy it... The CPC Version, I played once for about a half an hour... And then never touched it again! That was my only experience with any of the 8 Bit Versions... I ended up playing The Great Escape for DAYS... And that game could be damn frustrating too... But as least I felt like I could make progress!

I beat Green Beret routinely on my C64. An interesting thing about the game was it's software protection. It used to detect if your disc drive was switched on so you had turn it off to run the game. My attempt to remove the routine inside my Expert Cartridge's assembler did not go well, when I tried running the game it ran at ten times speed then crashed a few seconds later. 🤣

Can remember this on the c64 , literally any game me and my brother played as children, we did not get far! I remember a game called fox fights back, seemed so much fun as a kid, barbarian I received a lot of dead arms for just rolling . The only game I can remember watching my brother complete was c64 the running man, I can remember getting to the last level before mother started shouting one Sunday come and get you’re roast dinner, so it got turned off and I never did complete it! Loved the arcade back in the 80's, fondly remember playing on a caravan holiday when I was 12. The site had a big arcade but I can only remember Green Beret. I've beaten it since on mame. Didn't know of the PS3 Ex-Patriot game so have just 'bought' it and will try it out through emulation. Nice one Seb!!

Haha.. I got to Lvl2 as well. It was f-ing hard and I seriously considered poking it. Honestly, I found the arcade version harder, though it could be I practised more at home. You know what would be fun? A Best Spaceman/thing top 5 or something. So the Jetpac's, Nodes, Yesod's, Starquake, Marsport etc. Just a thought.

The 64 version was real tough. I think I only made it past the first level a handful of times and then didn't last very long on the 2nd level.

Green Beret was probably my favourite speccy game (min top 5). Awesome conversion, I found it more playable than the arcade version. Ultra basic gameplay admittedly, but I was hooked. Played it recently at Pixel Bunker in Milton Keynes, annoyingly the joystick was a little rusty.

I had the Spectrum version as a kid, so it was interesting to see you review the other versions that were around at the time 👍🏻

I'm someone who can't be bothered with hard games, but I don't remember GB being that hard, in fact I remember finishing it. I think it was a great conversion. Love the VR46 top btw!

Can definitely remember this on the CPC :) my brother was particularly fond of it, so much so in fact, he had managed to finish it and register his high score in a local monthly magazine here in Greece that was posting the best high scores every month among readers ( had managed to do the same with Ikari Warriors as well ). Me never had such skill in this :) But I do remember it, its another piece of the nostalgia of those old happy days :)

I played the C64 version to death, it was a memory game for the most part, very little rng. I did manage to finish it in the end!

The Speccy version plays extremely well. Feels more like the arcade version. The C64 version does have all the bells & whistles but I always thought that it was a bit too fast.

Always had a soft spot for Green Beret, but then again, I was a teenager back then when this came out and pretty much liked everything that I got my hands on. It was hard but I think I finished it just out of sheer persistence. It ran really nicely on the C64, too. One of Ocean''s better arcade conversions on the system. I never knew there was an updated sequel on the PS3 and 360. I would'be definitely given it a try.

I played a whole lot of the Spectrum version not the C64 version though... But I agree with you... One of my favourite Spectrum games but it was hard as nails, too hard... Never got to level 3, always died bitten by the dogs... This was a fun one 👍

Green Beret was one of the first CPC games I bought on a compilation. I didn't know of any other version, so the 'scrolling' didn't bother me. Actually I remember quite fondly the pause the screen flip gave to get my bearings on where enemies was one the screen. Played this a lot, and as you said, the backdrops where beautiful. Quite hard, but could reach level 3 almost every time and beat it several times.

Never really seen c64 version before. Unusual to see such fast moving games on the system, usually they looked nice but chugged when compared to speccy version. That looked like it could be fun (if it wasnt so hard). I couldnt get past level one on the speccy, so i'd never get far in the c64 version if it's even harder. (That was a random stream of thought - sorry, sounds like my child self wrote it)

Green Beret was in my top 5 games of C64. Impressive art style, unforgettable music, great graphics and scrolling. But it was unfair because of the blue soldiers that shot you instantly in front of your face and because of the overall speed with which the enemies were moving. I also loved the ZX Spectrum version, because it was adorable to look at it and listen to it, as it was the case with every Spectrum game. 🙂Plus it was a bit easier. But I wouldn't put it in the top 5 Spectrum games.

I loved Green Beret in the arcade. The Speccy conversion was totally on-point. Jof nailed the feel of it and it plays very closely - you can use the same moves/tactics on both. I just wish the the Speccy version had the music too. If I remember correctly Jof wanted another week of dev time but it had to be released.

I had the CPC version, it looks a bit grim today but at the time it WAS fun and you did get used to the burst scrolling

I remember buying the CPC version full price back in the day and loved it & played it for weeks. its was 86 & the Amstrad had only been around for about a year, espically in my region (Denmark). All the games was the time was kinda clunky, not just the hardware limitation like bad/no scrooling but the games design as well. And you had to learn the game's mechanic. Like i didnt know the arcade version of commando so it i kept dying in seconds, untill i fugured out i had to run and never stop. With Green Beret i quitely adapted, espcially as it all made sense.The jumpkicking ones & highshooting ones, you dodge below. The rest you can jump. There is a whole bunch of things you can do with ladders, like knowing that if you are in the air then the enemies will not use ladders. Or knowing that only so many enemies can be on screen at any time giving you awareness when to flip screen or not (and other cheaty things). Dont get me wrong the controls are certainly "heavy" so its best to double-tap. Boy was i surpriced when i got online decades later to learn everyone even most amstrad users hate the game.

I played this on the Spectrum and Arcade and thought both were... fine. I only played the arcade a handful because you know, having to waste money, whereas I had the speccy version at home. I struggled with the difficulty, primarily those bloody jumping guys, everything else wasn't too hard, but then again I'd have been around 11 so my gaming skills weren't exactly top tier.

For me the NES version of Rush 'n Attack blew my mind as a kid because it was my first game and only one for months, previously with only Atari 2600 games as a reference. As a 7 year old I never even caught the pun in the title. Maybe I won't pick it up again and just leave the memories alone.

This was a brilliant game on the mighty C64...and was one of the very few games that I actually completed - or rather, could be completed. There was something enormously satisfying about saving those hostages. I am surprised at the Amstrad effort...I would have expected something at least as good as the Spectrum version. How they thought that strange, delayed scrolling was acceptable, I will never know. 😂

I remember that a couple of arcade versions of Green Beret were just a commodore 64 version modified to work with a coin setup. Unless I am suffering from the Mandela Effect, which is entirely possible.

I had both, I forgot how good the spectrum version looked.

9:30 The Sinclair User review always puzzled me when it said it was lacking in sound, with more satisfying explosions on the 128k version. First, because the sound on this game is good, especially for the jumping man and the flame thrower. Second, because there doesn't appear to be a 128k version. No separate files are avaialable on WOS and loading the game in 128k mode shows no enhancements. Did the reviewer mistakenly think that the 48k sound effects were coming from the AY chip?

I remember liking this game on spectrum, but never was able to properly play it, it was just too difficult.

Well worth mentioning that the C64 version also has a nice tape loading screen with a Martin Galway loading tune to get you into the mood (although he says himself it's the one he was least happy with on the C64.) The difficulty is hard I admit, but at least you have the speed of play. I still have my C64 original as well as it being on the excellent Konami's Coin-Op Hits compilation released later on. The Spectrum version is also pretty good and deserved its praise, and if it was faster, the CPC version would be good. Glad you did mention that appalling Commodore 16 and Plus/4 version, which only came out on the aforementioned compilation first before a Hit Squad re-release. As for a suggestion for a future battles game, I'd go for Hyper Sports for an arcade conversion (cue Chariots of Fire title theme) and for an original game, Monty on the Run.

This game came on a special disc compilation that was free with my Spectrum +3. I can remember it being tough and only getting midway through the 2nd level, but I still loved it.

Great video. I did enjoy the Spectrum version but it was incredibly frustrating. I didn't go back to play the game at all until the Xbox 360 version arrived.

Nostalgia is a bitch, but there are some amazing classic games that I adore - Ninja Ryukenden 3 for NES, and Flashback for Genesis and it is a timeless classic.

I’d love a follow up vid on the Homebrew Amiga version to see if it tickles your fancy…

There is one additional version, a homebrew port from only a year or two ago for the Sega Master System. I'm biased of course but it's easily one of the better ones.

In our company we couldn't enjoy Green Beret as the game was tough and hard for the beginners like us back in the day. The grafics was nice, the controls were fine. Its just very dissapointing when you can't advance to the next levels after an hour of playing (same emotions we had with ZX version of Scooby Doo). Few years later I came across Rush'n'Attack on the NES. That game was hard as well, but one sudden glitch in the end of the third level helped to complete the game that evening. I checked the box "Done" and never reurned to the game😅

I dont know how much time I spent on level one. Seriously, it's quite embarrassing actually. Then all of a sudden I got past it and in the same go, completed the entire game... I still to this day have no idea what happened.

Completely agree the speccy version was solid, then again I found the arcade version difficult. Just wanted to throw my 10p piece at anyone who made it look easy.

The problem was, that the games were made as a copy (or conversion) of coin-ups... So, the difficulty level was horrible and length was short... After all, they were made to munch your coins... But, that's how it was made back then.

I grew up thinking the amstrads were better than the speccy having never played on one (amstrad) and only looking at the screenshots on the back of tapes - wow was I wrong! lol

i had the CPC version back in the day, and i loved the arcade version.. however, I was dissapointed with the flick screen thing. i enjoyed it because it was all i had, but I always preferred my pal’s Speccy version.

Dave Collier was a coder, not the graphics artist. Dave made a lot of C64 classics that are close to arcade perfect.

Really great game on the ZX Spectrum. Trying to be objective, except for the music being obviously better on the C64 version, the Spectrum version really looks the best. And sure the game was somewhat difficult, but not more than other games of that era. In my opinion, the game was very fair, and if you mastered the tactics, it could be reliably beaten.

The 64 version is stupidly difficult from the very first stage. Really not sure why it was made harder than the arcade game which is designed to suck you dry of 10Ps. But, the massive plus side of the Home Micros was POKEing around with them.

I still have no idea why and what cause the GFX glitches on C=64 when the Brick over heating.

Ahh, my favourite C64 game. As a kid I wasn't able to finish it, and now, even using saves in RetroArch it is still difficult (you cannot stop, shoots, jumps xD - so you may stuck with your save in a situation you cannot escape ;p) There may be some element of nostalgia but personally I think that C64 version is better than arcade. It's faster, green beret character imo looks better (or is it the animation) and the music / sounds are so much better. This makes you want to start the game over and over.

Calling Arcade Green Beret "just another side scroller" is pure heresy here. Besides Ghost 'n Goblins what other note worthy side scroller was there at the time? Green Beret totally worked to my imagination of Cold War back then! Amstrad version of Green Beret I only saw on my classmate's Amstrad and that game single handedly killed for me any sort of fantasies of owning the system even though it was full color unlike my speccy that at least had a playable version of Green Beret!

Just seeing that horrible CPC scroll already makes me want to play it. I can't believe that game has gone on sale.

I did manage to finish the c64 version but it’s biggest fault was the guys with the guns. In the arcade there was a short delay when they knelt down to fire giving you a chance to duck and avoid the bullet. On the 64 version for some inexplicable reason they decided to make them fire the instant they knelt down thus making it almost impossible to dodge sometimes if they fired at you from close enough. This is basically why you have to spend the entire game lying down and stabbing them if you want to have any success ! Shame really ,could have been amazing as opposed to just a very good version.just a little bit of fine tuning was what was needed but like a lot of games back then they just wanted to get them out the door.

I loved this back then in the Speccy (TK90X to be exact) even thought I also found it hard. It was a rare great conversion. The funny thing is that now in my oldening age, with much worse reflexes, I can complete it much easier. The secret is this: This is a 'get in the zone' game: There are few types of enemies -> the stabbing soldier, the jumpkick soldier, the shooting soldier and the one that carries the weapons. The Speccy didn't have the one that crawls. Just knowing what each does is enough to 'tacticool' your way to the end. But you have to kind of get in the zone to do it. edit: I forgot to add - In the armstrad version it seems you're playing as Robin Hood stabbing down other men in tights🤣!

I played the msdos version not mentioned on this video. It was pretty simple but playable as far as I remember ^_^

I first seen it at the swimming pool cafe and got to play it a time or two and loved it. For a long time after that it was the first game i would go to in the arcade if i got the chance, the sounds from the cab and the graphics always blew me away. I didn't mind the push scroll of the Amstrad conversion, as long as you always stabbed right up to the last second or shot a flamethrower into the next screen you were golden. I know its some kind of herecy to say that but i don't think it detracted too much from the game itself, the graphics were great, sound was okay and the colours were as close to the original as a plucky home micro of the time could muster. It's like when your mum would say we have Wimpy at home and you get two slices of bread, cheddar cheese and a frozen burger, i was just glad to have Green Beret at home 🤣🤣🤣

Try Bridgehead on Plus/4, it's a slower paced clone that's more forgiving and not a bad little game. There is also a C16 version of Bridgehead which lacks title screen music and has a few stages missing. It's still neat for a machine with 12k tho. Enjoy!

Loved it on the c64. But waaaaay too hard. Rarely got past level one. Remember the excitement of buying it though ( a rare non pirated game). I also remember the artwork being reproduced on a Sydney wall.

I had it for CPC on tape. Was pretty but I didn't play it much even though it was a double-tape box premium release representing a considerable investment for a kid. It may have been one of those _reload level one from tape if you die on a later level_ games. WTF didn't developers just adapt and let you always choose to restart your current level that was in memory, maybe at the cost of never being able to get a high score without playing from the first level, if you died playing the tape version???

You gotta be mad to prefer the C64 over the Spectrum 😂

I had the BBC version and IIRC after level 2 it would just reset the computer. I remember back then thinking seemed incomplete. Either way, I didn't care as it was the few arcade ports on the system.

The speccy version is a good game, OK it's a hard game, but games of old were very hard.But if you keep playing and playing you get a bit further.And you don't have a save option like you do modern games.And if it's too hard, you type in the old pokes cheats😂.Next game BombJack please, that was really good.

Just going off memory now but something i could never understand why the Arcade Green Beret / Rush n Attack you had to push up to jump ? I mean i know why the Home Versions made you do this / lack of buttons but why the Arcade they always had as many buttons as the game needed right ?

I had Greed Beret with the Konami Arcade Collection and I don't recall enjoying it that much - but it wasn't as bad as some of the other titles in that box! Jail Break was miserable and Yie Ar Kung Fu wasn't great. Ping Pong, Hypersports and Nemesis were the highlights.

A lot of the games were utter bleep-bleeps to complete, or get even part way into back then. I only played the Amstrad version that looked great, but had shocking, full page scrolling.

I was ABSOLUTE SHITE on the speccy version (couldn't get past the first level).

Me and ALL my friends used a system where we became EXPERTS at balancing a chair backwards onto the back two legs without tipping over if the Spacebar was a second fire button so we could hit it with our big toe. The micro was staying on the desk. As for Green Beret? yeah NOT a game I remember fondly and it had nothing to do with the toughness I just didn't enjoy it and I tried it on both the Speccy 128 and C64. I'll admit it's me, I know people who love it and so did the mags and tbf as an 80's home port of an arcade game? they replicated it well.. It's something about the gameplay that just never hooked me

Green Beret on the C64 was a perfect conversion of an arcade game that wasn't really that suited as a home game due to difficulty and without an arcade quality joystick like the Euromax Zipstik it's not fun at all. Not Ocean's fault I had to play it with a Quickshot Turbo though really.

Reality is that even so-so retro-style games on Steam or mobile made in the last decade absolutely slay the games that inspired them on gameplay and not just visuals. A lot has been learned and shared on the internet since gormless teenage twats who barely grokked machine code were bashing these out in their bedrooms to stupidly tight deadlines for games publishers who grossly underpaid them and shoveled the results out for the gaming journos to pick through to try to find something decent to feature in their mags.

I know I saw that arcade back in the day, but I can't remember the gfx being that ugly (looks more NES like than arcade like). I hacked my seafaring copy to get more lives and I played through the whole game.
