I did the graphics for Ninja Rabbits... 😮 It was my first job and first professional game I worked on... Aged 17. 🤣

I’ve had this idea that there should exist a KZfaq personality focused on perfectly okay, average games. At the time there was a rise of comedic angry reviewers, and also creators talking about games they liked. But I’m interested in ALL old games. So I really appreciate this video giving the unspectacular games a place in the spotlight.

Thanks for highlighting some of these poor "meh" games that are often overlooked for some reason!

Nexus was a well hyped game from a new company(IIRC) that were some kind of superstar developer type I think. The game sank the company AFAIR.

Rock Star ended up on budget quite quickly (less than a year if I recall right) but it was originally released on “Code Masters Gold” and heavily advertised. Guessing it didn’t do that well as they shied away from that after didn’t they?

Frogmaster is a big bowl of WTF stuffed into a cartridge. I loaned it to a classmate at school and he couldn't give it back quickly enough.

I can remember buying Ninja Rabbits and then getting it's sequel International Ninja Rabbits and getting my mother to order me the t-shirt with the artwork on as there was an offer for it in the cassette box at the time. In hindsight Ninja Rabbits didn't quite become the franchise I was hoping for back then.

i thoroughly enjoyed this venture down the avenue of MEH hehe. As a commodore kid myself, from christmas of 87 even in those days addled by bias for the c64, I certainly did notice a lot of nice looking games with nice SFX that ultimately was a pile of MEH. Though i would of seldom admitted it a lot of the speccy versions had better looking cartoony sprites and often held more playability in many of those same games. In general the speccy had more love put into its work.

Oh, Nexus. Got that on a Zzap covertape, IIRC. Aside from the ridiculously small play area and the fact that it explained itself really poorly, it was at least an interesting concept, so I'll give it that.

Great video as always. I always considered a meh game as a game scored between 45 and 65% so I am wondering is this a list of the meh of the meh games lol just kidding but loved the video :-)

Feud... yikes, I always thought the monks in the c64 version were wondering around with their giant tadgers sticking out from their robes and waggling around as they walked about. Can't unsee!

I love Nexus. I played it but never completed it. But Rock Star Ate My Hamster is a friggin gem in my opinion. I still play it from time to time. NOT meh at all.

Olli & Lissa's biggest problem is that you have to go back and forth through the same screens repeatedly. Feud is actually bugged on the C64, the computer AI doesn't work properly. Schizofrenia was original but so difficult to control. Metabolis was reviewed but then given away on the B-side of Bounder. Nexus was a good idea but badly implemented, the digitised pictures were ahead of their time. Rock Star deserved a better score, the caricatures are great and the music was really fun (Gavin Raeburn the programmer came up with a unique randomisation system that generated the music). Tarzan is genuinely meh, I do like the Rob Hubbard music and the changing daylight/night-time, but it lacks real excitement. I've actually written a book on terrible C64 games, called C64 Nightmares - due out from Fusion Retro Books soon.

As a Zzap fan growing up this round up ticked all the boxes for me.

I remember Nexus vividly, Zzap!64 had a preview of it long before it was released and were raving about how great it looked. When it came out, I purchased it without waiting for the real review and, boy was it a dud. Suckered.

I had that Tarzan game on the ZX Spectrum.... and was disappointed. Objects can be hidden behind the foreground, and apparently you need to collect some items in a very specific order too. Meh indeed.

Metabolis, albeit on Spectrum was the first video game I ever played..... I can't really disagree sadly but obviously it's got a place in my heart always. Also, surely the most meh game is whatever gets a meh rating of 5/10. Same as the biggest loser is whoever comes 2nd in a competition to find the biggest loser.

Blagger was one of my fave C64 games, Amok was one of my favorite Vic20 games, even though it's really pretty crap.

Feud is a great atmospheric horror game... on Atari. One of my favourites actually. Unfortunately C64 version is utter trash... and well it is also broken as the main enemy is supposed to follow the compass but instead appears on the screen randomly making the whole gameplay pointless.
