Crazy thing about Roy Benavidez was that he actually stepped on a landmine in his first tour, was told he would never be able to walk again, and walked out of the hospital a year later. Then he signed up for SF. What a legend.

The entire look of the character played by Tom Cruise was put together by Cruise. When Cruise pitched the look to Stiller he didn't get it at first. After Cruise was in full dress and danced Stiller said "ok now I get it". Tropic Thunder is absolutely in my top 7 movies of all time.

When I first watched this movie, I legit thought they replaced Robert Downey Jr to make the joke that the actor was so engrossed in becoming the character. I actually thought it was a different actor until the second time I watched the movie, and it was late into the second time when it clicked and I was like “OHHHHHHHHH HOOOOLYYYY SHIT!” 😂 almost the same with Tom Cruise. My dad and I watched it in theaters and when he’s dancing at the end I was like, holy shit dad that’s Tom Cruise and he didn’t believe me until the credits proved it. Such an amazing movie

Good stuff, guys. Stiller's weapon appeared to be a CAR-15 submachine gun, or is replicating one, that dates back to about 1960 and was used in RVN; often with LRRPs. Based on the M-16, it originally was for armor guys (tankers) as a space-saver yet had lots of firepower to replace the old WWII-era .45 caliber M3 (usually call a Grease Gun because of its' appearance). It had an collapsible/extendible buttstock and with it closed the total length was under 30".

Kurt not knowing about the XM177 variants/CAR-15 crushed my soul a little bit 🤦‍♂️ Hell it was the preferred weapon of all special forces as soon as they could get them... There are pressure release fuses. They aren't used when setting up typical minefields (they'd explode due to shifting pressure from freezing/thawing in the winter) rather to set up boobytraps. They do however do what movies show, explode when the pressure comes off. They can be put under ammo crates or gas cans or, best of all another mine. Do that last one and the top mine holds down the trigger device the "normal" mine gets disarmed and moved out of the hole, the pressure comes of and the delayed pressure fusing device sets off its mine, and the one in your hands.

It wasn't Tears of the Sun. It was Platoon. Willem Defoe's character. Which is an interesting scene regarding the blood special effects. Fun Fact the "prototype" of the M4 the XM177/CAR-15 Commando did have a collapsible buttstock and was used by the special forces in Vietnam. I really like the XM177's flash hider it just looks nice to me. It doubled as an adapter for firing rifle grenades usually a HEAT grenade or a HE Composite B grenade was later replaced by the M72 LAW, M79 grenade launcher, and MX148 under barrel grenade launcher.

It would be great to see what you guys make of The Way of the Gun, so underrated and brought action movies kicking and screaming into the modern world. 'Moving!'

I haven't seen it in forever, but yes, it's super underrated!

Yeah, but it's not really a military movie per se. Parker and Longbaugh were tactically very sophisticated for a pair of criminal lowlifes. If they'd just established some back story...

I saw an interview with Tom Cruise about that role. He made them agree that he could dance and have big hands before he’d sign on. Brilliant.

Just watched this for the first time last week, so the timing couldn’t have been better! The new movie Devotion was pretty good and might be worth a Beers and Breakdowns episode. Fantastic as always, Gentlemen!

Absolutely brilliant beers and breakdown. I sort of interview with Ben still at once where he said he had the concept of this movie written for about 10 years and because of the success of night at the museum the movie studio let him make whatever movie he wanted so he made this one....

Aussie here. Aussie war movie staring a very young Mel Gibson, Gallipoli. It was basically a massacre when ANZAC (Australia New Zealand Army Corps) landed at the wrong spot in Turkey in WW1 and literally had an uphill battle up a cliff.

02:30 Bruce Willis was in 'Tears of the Sun' . This Tropic Thunder scene is a parody of Willem Dafoe's death in the movie 'Platoon', also a great Vietnam war movie with Charlie Sheen.
