The Green Cleaning Starter Kit is so simple that you’ll need to trust me that it will indeed clean your house. Trust it. No side effects. No funny business. No fancy gimmicks. Just clean.
Check out the video for some extra motivation and then go gather these supplies:
2 - 1 quart (1 L) spray bottles - good heavy-duty ones
1 shaker jar with holes in the lid - such as an old spice jar or a mason jar
¼ c. (60 mL) Dr. Bronner’s Pure-Castile Soap - your favorite scent
2 c. (273 mL) white vinegar
1 qt. + 2 c. (1 L + 500 mL) water
2 c. (500 g) baking soda - bicarbonate of soda
Essential oils (optional) 20 drops/recipe - tea tree for an extra cleaning punch, and any other essential oil that makes you happy
Microfiber Cloths - often sold in the auto care section
To keep things simple in the video, I use the Dr. Bronner’s Pure-Castile soap. However, if you have snooped around my blog, you know that you can also use Dr. Bronner’s Sal Suds - 1 Tbsp. (15 mL).

I use sal suds when I clean vacation rentals professionally... The guests and owner is always so impressed everything is so clean lol. I use a drop of thieves oil with it in the spray bottle and it makes everything extra sparkly. Absolutely amazing on windows and mirrors using a squeegee.

For the cleanser you forgot to add 1/4 cup Dr. Bonners Castile liquid soap. This makes a soft cleanser. I tried it and it does a great job and smells good even without any essential oils. 🤍🧽

I keep a soap and water spray in the kitchen and use it to spray directly on dishes, scrub and rinse as i make dirty dishes. That way i don't have to run a basin or let dishes accumulate to save water.

Castille soap all purpose spray or sal suds all purpose spray? Honestly I'd like to have a bottle for the countertops, dinner table, etc.. what's better?
@GoingGreenwithLisaBronner
@GoingGreenwithLisaBronner 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Brian- Tough decision! I tackled just this question in this blog post: www.lisabronner.com/sal-suds-or-castile-soap-which-one-should-you-use/. But in a nutshell, if you have very hard water, you might prefer Sal Suds. Because Castile soap is a true soap, it reacts with the minerals contained in hard water. Sal Suds doesn't have this reaction.
@jewelbriard5444
@jewelbriard5444 Жыл бұрын
Can you substitute sal suds in these recipes ? I thought it is a no no to add vinegar or is that only for sal suds? So I am confused now. I have hard water here
@GoingGreenwithLisaBronner
@GoingGreenwithLisaBronner Жыл бұрын
Hi Jewel- Sal Suds can be used in place of Castile Soap in all of the GIY recipes, although you need less of it because it's more concentrated. To make the All-Purpose Spray in this video, use 1 Tbsp. Sal Suds. (Find all my Sal Suds recipes here on my website, www.lisabronner.com/sal-suds-dilution-cheat-sheet/) You're absolutely correct that vinegar will cause Castile Soap to unsaponify into a goopy mess. Vinegar and Sal Suds don't have the same reaction, but testing shows that vinegar reduces the efficacy of Sal Suds. The one recipe where vinegar is used alongside Sal Suds or Castile Soap is the GIY Soft Scrub. In this recipe, the baking soda acts as a buffer between the vinegar and the Castile Soap or Sal Suds. Baking soda is a faster reactant with the vinegar, distracting it in a sense before the vinegar can impact the soap. This is why the proportions are key. If you have excess vinegar, then there will be enough to react with both the baking soda and the soap. The baking soda/vinegar reaction gives this solution its structure and ability to cling to vertical and slippery surfaces. In this instance, you are not getting any chemical cleaning from either the vinegar or baking soda, but they are acting more as mechanical cleaners. The soap is doing the work.

can you use the general cleaner on marble counter top?
@GoingGreenwithLisaBronner

Hi Jim- The concern with marble is acidic cleaners. Both Sal Suds and Castile Soap are alkaline and completely safe on stone of all types. For a deeper dive, ready my blog post on cleaning stone, www.lisabronner.com/cleaning-stone-with-castile-soap-sal-suds/

I still don't really understand the ratio of the all purpose cleaner. Isir just fill with water minus 1/4 cup so there's room for the soap? What about a disenfectant to kill germs etc?
@GoingGreenwithLisaBronner
@GoingGreenwithLisaBronner 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Philip- I fill my bottle with a quart of water and then add the 1/4 cup - which is 2 oz. If your spray bottle doesn't have any wiggle room, add the soap first then slowly add the water. Too quick and you'll have a bubble overflow. Castile soap works by grabbing onto any manner of dirt, germs and grime, and washing them away. It doesn't kill germs, but it doesn't need to because it washes them away. I cover this in more detail in my blog post, "Ditch the Antibacterial: Soap is All you Need" at www.lisabronner.com/ditch-the-antibacterial-soap-is-all-you-need/.

Thanks! I've used peppermint Castile for years and years as a professional theatrical makeup artist to wash my brushes (as well as body care) it's the best because it immediately takes all the grease paint out of the synthetic and natural fibers, but (unlike dish soap which also does that) the oils condition the bristles at the same time (without feeling oily) so my natural hair bristles never dry up. I thought this was kind of a secret use that only us "industry folks" used buy I see now in you tube maany people use it as brush cleaner. I love it! So excited to see the citrus scent as I'm trying to switch to more natural home cleaning products. 👍😄👏

What is Sal Suds. I've been into natural products since I was 20 and am 77 and never heard of it.
@GoingGreenwithLisaBronner
@GoingGreenwithLisaBronner 21 күн бұрын
Hi Dawn- Sal Suds is our biodegradable household cleaner developed by my dad, Jim Bronner (Dr. Bronner's youngest child) in 1975 when he was frustrated with how the Castile reacted with the hard water we had in Los Angeles, as any true soap would. So he developed the Sal Suds with its more stable structure that doesn't react with hard water minerals, yet still is a mild cleanser. It's not as widely available as the Castile Soap and usually found in the house cleaning section of natural grocery stores or on our webstore (bit.ly/ShopDRBs). This article on my Going Green website breaks down the difference between both products in detail, bit.ly/WhichOnetoUse.

even without the oils is it a disinfectant?
@GoingGreenwithLisaBronner
@GoingGreenwithLisaBronner 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Kelly - That's a word we can't use because the soap does not contain a pesticide or other biocide and is not registered on the EPA's list of disinfectants. However, with all the attention that housecleaning has received over the past 1+ year, the CDC still recommends normal soap and water for regular cleaning, and only to use disinfectants when there's a known contagion present.

Hi how long will the general cleaner with liquid soap last? You add 6% liquid soap to a litre, I would imagine bacteria would start to grow after a week or two without a preservative. 🙊
@GoingGreenwithLisaBronner
@GoingGreenwithLisaBronner Жыл бұрын
Hi Mark - There are many variabilities in shelf life - type of water, temperature, storage conditions - in addition to the dilution itself. Soap itself is self preserving, but as you note, when it is diluted, it is less so. Our standard recommendation is 2-4 weeks. Make as much solution as you'd use in that time period.
@2711marcus
@2711marcus Жыл бұрын
@@GoingGreenwithLisaBronner Thank you Lisa will do. I did test the pH of the diluted general purpose cleaner with the liquid soap and it was still over 9 so that would be self preserving 😊

How to make it into a disinfectant?
@GoingGreenwithLisaBronner
@GoingGreenwithLisaBronner 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Kelly- Unless someone is sick, I do not regularly disinfect my surfaces. This is per the CDC’s recommendation (www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/disinfecting-your-home.html) as unnecessary disinfecting can reduce the efficacy of disinfectants and unnecessarily expose us to more intense chemicals. Disinfectants clean by killing. Our soaps work by latching on to surfaces and removing dirt, germs, and grime. When disinfecting is called for, either alcohol between 60%-90% spray surface and let air dry - or hydrogen Peroxide, if bought at the standard pharmacy concentration of 3%, diluted with water at a ratio of 1:5 - let sit for 1 minute. Alcohol smells worse but hydrogen peroxide can bleach some surfaces, so spot test before deciding which to use first.

I ordered one gallon of lavender and 6 bar soap on 3/16/20 and they charged my credit card I live in California and I still haven’t received my items. They don’t answer their phones and they don’t reply your emails. One day I emailed them and told them I would be connecting Better Business Bureau so they emailed me to tell me they had a high volume so I replied if that is the case then why charge me if they knew they couldn’t fill and mail my order.

Hi Lilia - I am very sorry to hear of your delay. Unfortunately, all shipping companies have run into delays this week. Although your order was packed and charged by us on 3/16, we rely on outside shipping companies to take orders from us to you. These companies have not been able to maintain the speedy delivery we have grown accustomed to. Because customer service and all our office staff have been sent to work from home this week, we have been having difficulties getting all calls forwarded. Please bear with us as we work through this unprecedented situation. We're figuring it out as we go along.
