Green Lasers: What Can Certain mW Do?

This video compares some of the most common power outputs of green lasers you can buy these days. I compare the difference in visibility and burning between 5mW, 15mW, 35mW, 50mW, 100mW, and 150mW.
Important info after watching this video:
-I used fog to bring out the beams.
-This video is only about green lasers because they are nearly always fixed focus and have a small beam diameter.
-I mention powers where tricks are EASY to do. You may be able to pull off burning tricks with less power than what I state, but these are bench mark powers where you can reliably do these burning tricks.
-Additional focusing with extra lenses can lower the threshold of what you need to burn. Watch my focus video for a better explanation of this.
-I go by actual power of these lasers in this video, not advertised. Nearly all cheap laser sites sell lasers marked from 100mW to 300mW when in reality the actual power is much lower.
Check out laserpointerforums.com to learn more about laser pointers, lasers, and laser pointer companies! I have been a member there for 8 years, and have received a bunch of help from the knowledgeable members there!

@MrMortjon quote from description "-Additional focusing with extra lenses can lower the threshold of what you need to burn. Watch my focus video for a better explanation of this." in this video i just tried to demonstrate what power you can reliably do these ticks. i've pulled off match lights with 30mW

Anything greater than 1mw sweems the current recommendation as of 2024. Since there seems no accurate way to tell the power of a laser for the average end-user, just do not look at a laser. It is very apparent why powerful lasers pens are no longer easily purchased.

I think you can increase the output by heating the connections inside the laser, but as I'm sure you've been warned, the diodes in weaker lasers are usually tempermental and can become unstable should you try and modify them. Hope this helps.
@yourcaseworker6916

These are all diode pumped solid state (DPSS) lasers... Old school. Lets see the 520nm direct green diode lasers...I hear Nichia's got a 9 mm, 6 watt 520nm diode coming down the pipe. The 6 watt 445nm blue's are already on the market frying eyeball's...Imagine 6000mW of green beam lasing the sky..."I become death...The destroyer of worlds"...And retinas!
@styropyro
@styropyro 7 жыл бұрын
Oh man I need that 6W Nichia beast, although I bet it will be awful to drive. Green LDs still have terrible efficiency and need to be improved, because 6W of 520nm takes about the same power to run as roughly 30W of 450nm.

A couple of 18650 li-on cells...2700 to 3000 mAh should store of enough juice to run for a while...The right driver and a copper heat sink should provide a decent 30 to 60 second duty cycle...It'd be a good burner. I have a 9 mm green in a mini MXDL host...peaking at 1.25 W with a linear driver...Power supply is one 14500 - 3.7V 2000mAh li-on cell, with a small aluminum heat sink...duty cycle is 20 to 30 seconds on/off...It's a stealthy pocket dazzler.
@baguazhang2

Check out Rick Trent's videos on You Tube...He's already done it in a handheld host with a copper heat sink and 1 minute duty cycles. 6 watt Nichias in the 440 to 445nm wavelength...He is genius.

It depends on how dry and thin the wood is. I have a 1W laser like you and i can light match sticks on fire (the wood part not the red phosphorus part). But I wouldnt expect you to be able to get a big log alight. If you had some dry leaves or pine needles around you could make a fire that way. All it takes is a little smolder.

It depends on the power of the laser. From 1-499 mw, its safe to look at reflections without laser shades (however it is still required to wear shades for anything past 5 mw, for, direct exposure could cause some serious eye damage). From 500 mw on, it is NOT safe to even look at reflections the beam makes.

I just purchased a rifle-mounted light with an integrated 5mw green laser. Can you really see the beam itself with that thing normally like shown at :24? Or did you throw in a puff of smoke or vapor to make the beam visible? If you can see it, might kind of be a bad thing if you can trace a big green illuminescent line back to the person with the laser.

There are a couple of 10 watt (10,000mw) lasers on sale for around $55 on AliExpress right now. They come with glasses, case, 5 star heads, li-ion battery (2 18650 cells) and they are very powerful. You can only use these for a few min then you have to let them rest or they will over heat. They have a 150 watt co2 laser tube on sale too, but you don't need that, you can do some etching on the car down the street with it but that bright line will lead them right to you.

That could be that you arent holding the match at the focal point of the beam or that your batteries are bad. In a green laser like that, you usually can't adjust the focus of the laser so you'll have to find where the beam is smallest and use that to burn. Also, if you color the match black with a marker it will help absorb most of the light coming at it and burn faster. White surfaces don't burn very well when it comes to lasers.

Results will vary I suppose. I found that 50 mW green (metered at 55 mW) is just barely visible in lit areas, but it can pop a black balloon. It can put a small pinhole through electrical tape in about 1 minute. This is an Optotronics laser with a small diameter beam and extremely low divergence. At 300 mW (metered at 307 mW), a green laser will burn dark paper when unfocused and also light a match. When focused, it can put some shallow holes into wood and burn through a CD case.

One can see the green laser beam at low power more easily than other coloured beams because the human eye is most sensitive to green light. The light that you see from the beam is actually reflecting of dust/air particles. You only see a very small amount of the photons in the beam, as most of them just keep going to the target and never reach your eye.
@No1sonuk
@No1sonuk 10 ай бұрын
This is also the source of the "green is brighter than red" myth. Green 5mW is the same brightness as red 5mW. The green just LOOKS brighter because of the eye's colour response. It's also why NVG system displays are usually green.

it does depend on the distance, a laser could be 70mW, but at 20cm (eye safe) it would be 2mW. and yet, even 2mW isnt really healthy to look at, you could lose your visibility for couple of seconds if you look directly at the laser at 20cm (2mW if the diode is 70mW) and i've been doing FTP on a lot of lasers lately :P

You can't sea the "beam" itself. However, the light from the bem lights up dust in the air and that is what you actualy sea - lighted dust.

Our eyes are more sensitive to 555nm light. But I also read that our eyes are sensitive to 490nm light on dark adapted conditions.

Try searching for: HOW TO TURN A 5MW LASER INTO A 100MW LASER in youtube. It may give you a better idea of what to do. If that doesn't work out, try wickedlasers. They sell some INSANE lasers that are brighter than you could ever need. They aren't cheap,(about $300) but they're worth the money. I think for another $50, you can buy a lens kit you can use to dial down the laser output to a safer level as well as cool effects. you can also use the focusing lens to burn through things.
