Would be cool if they made a simple complete Beetle EV kit that was 4 wheels with an electric hub motor in each wheel for AWD traction. With say 120 HP & 150-170 fl lbs of torque when all 4 motors engage. You get an entire pre made kit with simple wiring & installation instructions. Remove the engine, transmission,drive shafts, simply bolt the 4 wheels on,(use the old suspension & brakes) Maybe make 4 hub motors that could be bolted into the center of a few different styles/choices of wheels. Connect the 4 wiring harnesses to each wheel, put one battery pack up front & one in the rear, for even weight distribution. Now you have AWD with nice even weight distribution. You could bring a spare tire/wheel that just bolts onto the hub motor to change a flat or just bring a plug/patch kit. The battery pack would use a DC to 12V DC converter going into a simple design regular car blade fuse box to power the cars LED headlights/tail lights/turn signals (that come with the kit) blower fan, little 12V DC electric heater, 12V peltier cooling fans blowing cool air on you for AC. Add 2 flexible solar panels that bend to fit the hood & roof contour that helps keep the battery charged.

My Bug used to go well over 100 with Webber carbs and 1600 pistons etc... just took a long run up to get there but would sit there all day on the motorway .. it felt stable and ran fine ... handled brilliantly mind you it had huge tyres a body kit and a whale tail on it! lol 🤣 boy do I miss my teens!!! an electric conversion on it would’ve been Fantastic! Before I rebuilt it, it used to have thin cross- ply tyres on it, one of my lasting memory’s was driving up a hill in the snow with ease whilst all the other cars around me got stuck with their fat radials on lol!! My smile was bigger than the car itself!! 😆 and after 30years I think I may be tempted to buy another one!! 😅 I had a lot of fun times in that old car!

This is so cool, I've been dreaming about an electric car for a while and an ebug is definitely a seducing one. I'd only add an efficient ac to run below the Brazil's sun, though. Very nice video. Would somebody bothered to tell me all the main components used to make the conversion? I've read tons of papers, news, forum's threads and haven't come to a conclusion about what kind of motor to use. If it's mandatory to use lifeo4 batteries (they're are expensive), why not use modern lead acid batteries instead, and so on. If anyone points me to the right direction to do a project like that I'd really appreciate it.

Let me say I know nothing about electric cars though understand both classic cars and electronics. If this car had retained its clutch and used its gears would it not draw less amps pulling away? Could the gearbox not be used on descents and braking to keep motor RPM high and make the most of regen braking? What I am getting at is that if the gearbox were used as originally intended, would the potential range not be greatly extended? Could a less powerful motor not achieve the same performance with an increased range by simply choosing an appropriate gear? I just don't see the point in ditching the clutch if retaining the stock manual gearbox? What would make a good clutchless system is if the stock transmission were ditched in favor of a fixed (as in no torque converter) CVT. Just my thoughts.
@timmytubede7 жыл бұрын
Electric motors are very different from combustion engines in that concern. You just don't need to adapt the gear ratio to the driving speed and motor rpm. There is electric motors that can go from 0 to top speed. You don't need a clutch because the electric motors can pull the car from a standstill. The efficiency curve on an electric motor is pretty boring and for that reason there is not really a need for gears. Combustion engines on the other hand normally only have a relatively small part of their rpm range where they are most efficient and at any other rpm they are significantly less effective. This is why you need gears and a clutch or gears and a torque converter or a CVT to use a combustion engine in a car while you don't need them with electric motors. Electric motors don't use that much more energy when accelerating faster because it is insignificant at which rpm they are running. There is a small difference but it's not like with an ICE where you'd have to shift down to accelerate quickly which of course uses more fuel because the engine runs at a higher rpm. When you are at a lower gear with an electric motor it would have to run faster to reach the same target speed as it would in a higher gear. So there is less load on the electric motor but it has to run faster -> Energy consumption is very similar. Electric motors for cars or bigger are required by law to run at 90+% efficiency ALL the time/at every load. Combustion engines get a max 45% efficiency at one point in the rpm range There is only an advantage if you need really high performance and the electric motor would otherwise not be powerful enough. (Acceleration at max power is quicker with a lower gear while top speed is limited of course compared to the higher gear) The regenerative braking is a good point because that is actually very dependant on the motors rpm. Coincidentally I drive a hybrid car so I know that "problem" that there is less electric braking at low speeds. But for driving that is not a problem, you just step on the gas and it pulls away pretty quick, electrically with a fixed gear ratio that covers speeds from 0 - 170 km/h (Or no gears at all, I have never looked into the motor unit actually) Finally: No, it would not (significantly) use less amps to pull away at a given acceleration in a lower gear. No, range can not be (significantly) increased with a less powerful electric motor (would be almost the same) and also it could not achieve the same performance as a more powerful motor. Yes, regenerative braking works better at an higher rpm. A CVT has a big advantage with a combustion engine but a very small one with an electric motor. So I think it would just be one more part that could break and also limits the torque because from what I've heard CVTs are prone to be not strong enough - I have never actually driven one EDIT: Efficiency curve for an electric motor: www.waterworld.com/content/dam/etc/medialib/new-lib/waterworld/print-articles/volume-27/issue-11/37677.res/_jcr_content/renditions/pennwell.web.450.300.gif Efficiency curve for some combustion engine: i.stack.imgur.com/Rl5zP.gif

A Leaf or a Model 3 are generic and seen all over the place. A classic VW converted to EV tends to universally draw positive attention and nods of approval. That's basically the entire cost difference. Most people are too pragmatic to go the exotic route.

At 5:15 - "This puts out 1000 watts, which is considerably more power than a stock Volkswagen." Err, 1000 watts = about 1.3 horsepower, about 50 less than a stock Volkswagen! I'm guessing he meant 1000 amps. 1000 amps x 120 volts = 120KW, which is about 160 horsepower, now that IS a lot more than a stock bug, must be good fun! Shame he didn't use an AC induction motor though, then he could leave it in second gear the whole time and have regenerative braking to increase the range even further.

Ehm, with the impulse motor he can still use regen braking. I'm not sure that he can do 120KW though. If he's using 18650 LiCo he's probably using laptop cells, which have a max discharge of 2C. So for a 220amp batter, that's 440amps. I think it's a 131v battery (29kwhs/220amphrs=131v), so at 440amps that's 57.6KW which is something like 77 horsepower. It's still going to be more fun than a 77 horsepower motor because of the immediate torque of an electric motor.

If you do change gears what stops grinding? You said there is no clutch so when its goes through neutral wont the motor spin and have the same effect as a ice?
@Salafrance6 жыл бұрын
I'm guessing, but he might just be matching the motor/gearbox rotation perfectly on the shift. There's no reason you can't do this in the motor controller with a couple of rotation sensors and a gear shift sensor. Overall, it would be substantially less complex than a clutch and pressure plate, and it should also be a lot more reliable. Most of the work would be in the controller firmware. You might need a lock system to prevent shifting into, say, first at 90+, but then again, you might not - it depends on the design limits of the motor.
@Salafrance6 жыл бұрын
Thinking about it, you'd probably need to add a lock to the shift to accommodate the match delay caused by the rotational inertia of the motor, but that *should* be the most complex part of the system.

a full fuel tank is something like 160-170lbs; the motor is another 100 or so. So yeah all said and done an EV converted classic VW will be about 2-300lbs heavier, the equivalent of driving with a large-ish passenger. Considering that the conversion typically triples the motor power, and that the weight distribution tends to become more even and stable (no gas sloshing around in that tank), it's a pretty attractive deal.
