From “Better Late Than Never!” 1966.
REMADE BY: Linda Ronstadt & the Stone Poneys (1967-68 - peak at #13 • Different Drum )
Different Drum (Mike Nesmith) by The Greenbriar Boys
We know the 1967 Linda Ronstadt/Stone Poneys hit ( • Stone Poneys (Linda Ro... ), but the song had been composed as early as 1963 by future Monkee Michael Nesmith. This first recorded version by the northern bluegrass band appeared on their LP “Better Late Than Never!”

I actually have now listened to this alot. Loved Linda's but now love this. His voice is really great - didn't appreciate at first. Great that song can have different approaches - this is more mournful, which also works, at least with me. If you hate this, love Linda's, fine. Just appreciate that its subjective. People, thank God, are different and listen to different drums.

Was a teen in the 70's, so it was Linda's version I knew. Took myself to a local theater in September 2019 to see the excellent documentary based on her memoir. The isolation of Covid afforded me the opportunity to do a deep dive into her career. So grateful to her for leading me to the original artists who recorded the songs she covered, and the songwriters who wrote them. Fascinating to hear this version.

I appreciate this song, and I thank them for recording it....cuz without this recording then Linda and the ponys would have never heard it and covered this song from an unknown songwriter. So love it or hate it if you appreciate Linda's career this is the first step into the record selling limelight. Linda does do the song some serious justice, but then again she did almost every song she covered better then the original. We love you Linda.

I always thought it was odd that Linda Ronstadt would say "I ain't sayin you ain't pretty". That's just not something a girl would say to a guy. I knew a guy had to be the original singer. This version is so beautiful. Now I have two that give me goose bumps. Lol

I loved the Greenbrier Boys. In the 60's I played this song over and over. Some of the comments here say this song is terrible. But to those folks I say you are not a fan of early bluegrass music. Bluegrass music has changed a lot in the last 50 years. I'm guessing that if Alison Krauss recorded Different Drum, everyone would love her version. Mike Nesmith, who wrote the song, is closer to the Greenbrier Boys version than Linda Ronstadt s version. BTW, Linda hated her version of the song. Regardless, Nesmith's song lives in history. RIP Michael Nesmith.

@@chriswalters6148 the jazz bassist Jimmy Bond was the arranger on Linda's version. Apparently Linda wasn't keen on it at first. But if you check out the clip of the Stone Poneys playing it live you can hear that he deserves a lot of credit! Written of course by Michael Nesmith from the Monkees. His own version is understated in comparison, but nice...

In bluegrass circles these guys were quite the innovators for their time. Before bluegrass crossover and Pete Wernick's ululating became a thing, these guys were digging up young Texas songwriters. And Frank Wakefield's mandolin improvisations were getting jazzy. We used to here them in upstate New York. They sounded better live or on LP better than streaming on a smartphone.

Mike wrote this in 1965 and couldn't seem to get anyone to record him performing it. It was then placed with the Greenbriar Boys and as we know later with Linda Ronstadt et. al. Mike tried to get the Monkee's producers interested in it, but they said "it's not a Monkees' song." Mike replied "But *I* am a Monkee." Mike did a few one-off shows on the Left Coast back in 68-69 when not engaged with the band and he was great singing songs that others made memorable for him.

The male version makes the line "I ain't sayin' you ain't pretty" more believable. Her version also disdains "a boy who wants to love only me." Women endorsing infidelity! Exceedingly before her time!
