SWEDISH AXE KILLER? - The Beavercraft AX1

Bushcraft means many things, but sharp things and gear, seems to form a large part for some!
The hand-forged Swedish axe seems to be a piece of must have gear for the dedicated bushcrafter - however , you’ll pay a lot for one. But is there a more reasonably priced alternative?
Yes there is - the AX1 from Beavercraft!
Enjoy

Anyone interested in whittling or spoon carving cannot go wrong with Beaver craft tools. I own a handful of different knives, detail, sloyd and crook. All top quality and great prices.

well as a swedish person who has owned all brands of hatchets and axes made in sweden i would say fiskars actually the best alterantive once you get around the fact its composite instead of wood handle,but that looks like a great option for a wood handle and it supports ukraine.

I definitely love my Fiskars hatchet and axe. Most swings are a single split unless the wood is cross-grained.

I really like these videos you make, that highlight that BushCraft kit/gear fashion is basically a commercial sales promotion. I always think of the blokes who did a World trip on £20,000 + motorcycles to great acclaim, then a young lady did practically the same thing, alone and virtually unsupported on a £4000 bike. If a tool works, is well made and reliable then everything else is just hanging on a name or what is fashionable.

Another good review Neil of what appears to be a nice little carving axe. After lusting after a Robin Carving axe for a couple of years, I eventually gave up as they are always out of stock. Bought the slightly heavier Husqvarna hatchet instead, which is made for them by Hultafors. A brilliant bushcraft too for only £35 delivered. Going to get another one soon to hang on a 16" handle for heavier duty work.

A nifty little ax 😊 I only have two cons; the grain orientation and I would love a little knob at the end of the handle 😊
@OnceUponAnotherTime
@OnceUponAnotherTime 9 ай бұрын
Just a thought about grain orientation on a hand ax. As you mention, they really shouldn't be getting that much stress. That said, the only handles I've had broken (by someone else, borrowing them), is trying to split wood by sinking the ax in, prying the wood apart. That was actually sideways stress. Maybe a BeaverCraft would handle that better? -- But of course, I'm not loaning axes to others much anymore. Not really a factor.

Thanks for the review. They have a new axe out, the AX3, that probably needs a review as well. The AX2 is an adze and as such a specialized woodworking tool. There are some decent German axes that can be found for a good price as well, so I think the Swedish axes are overpriced. But that is what happens when the attention goes one way only.

Nice review and like the product. Completely agree with your brief comment 'prefer a longer one'. (Wouldn't we all 🤣). It looks as though the shaft is a an inch if not a couple too short for the overall form of the axe...

Nice wee axe Neil. I am only just now looking at an axe, I like a tomahawk really - but that looks okay for what I'd use it for. How does it sharpen? Does the grind last? A 16-18 Inch handle would suit me, a bigger axe would be wasted. But at those prices I think I'll be seeing a blacksmith I know.

I have recently gotten this axe. Its pretty damn good. Would almost be perfect if the handle were slightly longer in my opinion. My only negative to speak of is the mask. The one mine came with falls off without unfastening the button closer. A little dangerous. Hopefully not all of them have this issue. Ive seen a few other reviews and it is never mentioned so i probably got a bad one.

Please could you do a review and a compare axes that can be bought from local hardware stores to a typical bushcraft axe. One such is DeWalt DEWALT CAMPERS AXE 1 1/4LB which is listed in Screwfix. It has a solid handle rather than wood. Also Fiskars as a person commented below.

Bought one on the back of this video, liked the look of it seems like a nice size and price to chuck in a carving kit. Arrived today..........Going back tomorrow, absolutely appalling the head shape is like a splitting axe, the cheeks are about 10mm thick each side and the forge finish looks like it was done with a ball peen hammer!!!

Can't beat that deal for a hand forged axe! If I didn't have so many axes already I might be tempted to add one to my collection. I have Gransfors, Hult Bruks, vintage Snow & Nealy's, Kelly, Plumbs, and a few others that their names escape me at the moment. I recently added a Council Tool Flying Fox to my collection and it has quickly become my favorite of the lot! While not hand forged, it is very well made and hafted to perfection, has clearly visible hardened edge and hardened poll lines and takes an edge like no other axe or hatchet I own. It cost me $55 USD, but did not come with a mask which is okay as I prefer to craft my own masks out of leather anyways. It didn't take me long to bedeck this prince of an hatchet with a custom made mask. ;-) I'm guessing import duties in the UK would probably add quite a bit to the price tag for one though. For your viewers that might have a very tight budget, I have this advice for them. Keep an eye open at antique and second hand stores for old axe and hatchet heads. One can often pick them up for very little money. One in my collection I picked up for a fiver. No idea who made it as there is no name or stamp on it, but it does appear to be quite old and good steel. I fashioned my own handle for it out of a piece of hardwood I had in my wood pile. There is something very satisfying and cathartic about finding a great deal on a hatchet head and then using one's own hands, imagination and some simple tools to bring it back to a useful life again.

The amount of Brades , Gilpin and Whitehouse to name but a few of the real quality Hatchets that can be found at Car Boot Sales Flea Markets etc for around £5/£10 its seems odd to pay £100 plus just because something has achieved " Cult " Status. Every Time the likes of say " Kent Survival???" Chops a piece of Wood the Video has to linger on his Granfor Axe . Its like Tool Snobbery and its not necessary to have to have one to enjoy yourself
