We are passionate about all species of waterfowl, but if you have been following along for any length of time, it's probably easy to recognize that the way we talk about mallards over skinny water is unlike anything else. Whether it's in flooded green timber or a warm water creek you could walk across in knee boots, it just hits different for us. We've had plans for a long time now to hunt with our good buddy Geoff McEvers after the New Year, but after a harsh spell of negative temps and winter weather, Geoff seemed a little worried that things had taken a turn for the worse. After giving one last scout last night to this particular spot on a long stretch of a warm water slough, we felt good that there were still plenty of birds to work with for four guys. With temps hovering around 0° at shooting light, any concerns were lifted as mallards Dive-Bombed our decoys at a ridiculously close range. Geared up with 20 gauges, we made the call to shoot green only, and what a morning it was! After the chaos of the early morning, singles and pairs trickled to the "hot tub," and we took turns picking them off. Admittedly, it felt odd to be able to kill 7 mallards coming from the lower Mississippi Flyway, where we can only kill 4, but you won't hear any complaints from us! Like last year, we're off to one heck of a start in 2022!
