I'm very impressed with Jose Avila. I was looking for some tall evergreens for privacy screening. The New Zealand Flax is getting my attention. Thanks for putting this up on KZfaq!

Thank you! I feel confident I can now divide my 10 feet tall New Zealand Flax AKA Phormium! I'll make sure to get some help. It's going to be a big job.

Dude, you don't cut the heads off the 3 centre ones, they're the baby flanked by parents. That was quite brutal to see that.

Thats great info... I've planted flax in the past and usually last about three to five years and then I lose them... But I thank you for your time and effort, and I'll be planting more soon My question is when's the best time to separate them like you just did and this video...

Thank you. I'd like to see you prune out the dead or ugly and too tall branches, then water. Much appreciated.

Will the leaves that have browned at the ends become green again once we cut it back? I have one which has grown to over 6ft! Not in great condition.

I cut my flax grass off so it's only 10 in high. There was 50 percent damage on tbe plant. The crown is good. I live in Portland Oregon. Will it grow back and how long will it take
@cliff91363 жыл бұрын
How old is the plant you cut back? If it’s well established then you could see 1 foot of growth per year in a temperate climate.

Looks like you worked in a butchers before gardening

Yeah right David. He should have been a butcher. Be far easier if he just washed the whole root system then separate them. Cut fan back hard slanting toward the outside for water run off so plant won't rot. Leave three centre blades uncut. Grab spade and make a slit in the earth, place fan root in slit then water then tramp soil back down.

Why do you guys have to be rude to him? Jose was sharing his knowledge in the hope that it would help others. The mature response would have to said "Hey Jose, did you know you could do this ______.?" I'm sure he would have valued your superior knowledge, as he is not of nz.
