Written in 1580, “Greensleeves” is a traditional English folk song. It has interpretations ranging from prostitution to love, and even Anne Boleyn’s rejection of Henry VIII.
Christmas and New Year texts have been associated with the tune since 1686, most of them ending with “On Christmas Day in the morning”. One of the most popular being “What Child is This?”.
