Thanks to Cadillac Zack for getting me so close. Check out his blues channel @BluesExpert
Sony FX30 1080p 60fps, Sigma 50mm f1.4 fixed on a Sirui Tripod.
All settings automatic: Auto focus, Auto Aperture, Auto ISO.
Camera microphone: I backed the audio off a bit to avoid clipping in this loud environment. There was a PA but I was close enough to mostly get sound from the instruments and amplifiers.
This is my first outing with this new camera, so I did everything auto.
I put the autofocus on Greg's face and let it run. As a guitarist, I was interested in what Greg was doing, including his comping technique while Toby Lee Marshall was soloing. Sorry Toby, you are a monster. I would have loved to get his expressions and some shots of his keyboard. I tried to keep Dylan in the shot to because he was on fire this night.

This is a tune that most guitarists wouldn't and shouldn't touch. Jeff's versions will never be equaled. Having said that, Greg did an awesome version with his own stamp on it. Jeff would have loved it.

Greg deserves all the love for his playing, but let's also give it up for Dylan's drumming and Toby's impeccable work on the keys. We all know the *real* star, though... Dylan's LOTR t-shirt. ❤

Well, he owns A tele. This green one is mine. I lent it to him, to get his thoughts on a new pickup combination I thought up. He said it was ok - not as much of an endorsement as I had hoped for. C’est la vie, eh?

Thanks for that Nick, that was beautiful, I think Greg's tone in the older video sounds really incredible. I just became familiar with Greg within the last couple year's and what an extraordinary talent, much like Jeff I love everything he does and his being down to earth humble and his senses of humor just make him that much more "likeable"! He's an inspiration for sure. He's the perfect mix of technicality, creativity, personality and proficiency and my musical world is a better place with Greg Koch in it👍

Best cover I’ve ever heard. Jeff used his tremolo bar but Greg uses his fingers. Beautiful’caster. 👏🏻👏🏻
@NicholasStein
@NicholasStein Жыл бұрын
It is both a cover and original. I noticed that too. It is amazing he gets the Jeff Beck sounds without the trem. It is interesting because the Reverend Gristle 90 which he was using from the Orange Room last week has the Bixby and a Rosewood fretboard, whereas his Signature Gristlemaster looks like a Tele and has no tremolo and a maple neck.

@@NicholasStein Koch doesn't even need one. But to be fair, I don't think Beck used a Strat on the original track. (If memory serves me correctly, he used that Telecaster with the SD humbuckers in it.)
@NicholasStein
@NicholasStein Жыл бұрын
@@easter_sunday You got me with this interesting comment. You memory is amazing. Most of the live versions on YT show him using the white left handed strat. The original Blow by Blow album shows him playing an Black LP Custom. In the 1986 Karuizawa, Japan video he is indeed playing a Tele with no whammy. A quick search using Bing's ChatGPT says he used a Tele-Gib on Blow by Blow. www.guitarlobby.com/jeff-beck-guitars-and-gear/ His guitar collection was incredible, as befits a musician of his stature.
@easter_sunday

@@NicholasStein The only reason I remember that is because I was watching this interview with Beck when he talked about his old Esquire and how he traded it with Seymour Duncan for that Telecaster with the humbuckers in it (and he mentioned using it on that track).

@@NicholasStein Wow you read my mind thx! Now one more mystery you think JB did it with his fingers without pick on the record?
@NicholasStein
@NicholasStein Жыл бұрын
@@frabber321 I started with why GK can do it without a whammy bar. ICBW but I think Blow By Blow was recorded with a Tele with no whammy and a pick. JB has always used his fingers even with the yardbirds an switched to using his thumb more over time. He still used a pick from time to time. Wes Montgomery used his thumb. Most flamenco players use their hands instead of a pick. In my own playing I have been using fingers more and more. But I still use a pick. It’s the sound, not the technique. JB had the sound. GK has the sound. It’s all good.

I think he's a great guitarist. Unfortunately he hasn't come within a mile of the subtle nuances Jeff Beck played. There's a huge difference in playing and feeling. I know I'm going to receive grief for my opinion but listen carefully to the half bends and drops by JB and then listen again to this. If you can't relate then you are really not feeling the music.
@HecCBlanKakaVinZon
@HecCBlanKakaVinZon Жыл бұрын
very correct, no doubt Greg is an exceptional player, but, yup the but thing...this piece is not demanding virtuosity nor complex solidians, And thanks for saying it @flyjuice9140, but many covers can't seem to get a grip on the emotion, the humility, the nuances, the pain and the triumph rolled as one. Closest i heard was Gary Clarke in the tribute for... yah, there was some tear or 2 on his guitar there. Heartfelt. Just my 2 cents.

It is easier to compose an original song than try to imitate the playing style of others. Kudos to those who imitate the nitty gritty notes of songs. They are better than those that just write songs simply because they can nail the details. People are amaze when they hear a guitar player who NEVER play the same way on a song/music twice. The truth is he forgot the EXACT NOTES he played in the original; so he has to improvise & ends "not playing the same way on a song twice." Not really impressive. What's interesting are those who cover the original songs NOTE-BY-NOTE. Job well done on this cover!
