This is a tune that most guitarists wouldn't and shouldn't touch. Jeff's versions will never be equaled. Having said that, Greg did an awesome version with his own stamp on it. Jeff would have loved it.

I feel much as you do. He said in an interview that that is how he did it. He would hear something he liked and worked to include it in his vocabulary. So that is what I am doing. I get one thing from Greg like the opening riff from this tune. Then I grab one of those pull bends on the A string from Chris Buck. Then I steal the opening Garcia riff from Mississippi Half Step. Then find a riff from Charlie Parker. Fit them into to whatever you are working on now. Suddenly you hear things in a different way. Don’t give up. I know you can become yourself.

I'm fortunate to live close enough to Milwaukee that I see Greg/KMT regularly. When he treats the audience to slow blues it is truly mind & body bending. Chiefs Blues is one of my favorites, especially when paired with Red House.

And so it was, the gristly, gooey goodness of Chief’s Blues was descended upon the musical masses in a fiery fusillade of furious fingers. And, inevitably, as the grins stretched ear to ear, all was right with the world…

Shenanigans aside a moment, this is a truly amazing performance. So glad I was fortunate enough, by quirk of scheduling, to see the KMT twice this year in different venues.

@@lordstanley34 I saw the band all 4 times on the January Southern California visit. I finally got to record this the final session on my new video camera. My objective was to record Greg's performance as closely as possible. As a guitarist, I want to see the guitar performance. Toby and Dylan are great. The band is tighter than... However, I wanted to record all the guitar madness.

I think he's a great guitarist. Unfortunately he hasn't come within a mile of the subtle nuances Jeff Beck played. There's a huge difference in playing and feeling. I know I'm going to receive grief for my opinion but listen carefully to the half bends and drops by JB and then listen again to this. If you can't relate then you are really not feeling the music.

very correct, no doubt Greg is an exceptional player, but, yup the but thing...this piece is not demanding virtuosity nor complex solidians, And thanks for saying it @flyjuice9140, but many covers can't seem to get a grip on the emotion, the humility, the nuances, the pain and the triumph rolled as one. Closest i heard was Gary Clarke in the tribute for... yah, there was some tear or 2 on his guitar there. Heartfelt. Just my 2 cents.

It is easier to compose an original song than try to imitate the playing style of others. Kudos to those who imitate the nitty gritty notes of songs. They are better than those that just write songs simply because they can nail the details. People are amaze when they hear a guitar player who NEVER play the same way on a song/music twice. The truth is he forgot the EXACT NOTES he played in the original; so he has to improvise & ends "not playing the same way on a song twice." Not really impressive. What's interesting are those who cover the original songs NOTE-BY-NOTE. Job well done on this cover!

As a fan I am happy to be able see him in that intimate kind of venue. They do not seem to mind my taking a video either. I agree that most mass music in the 21st century is pretty bland. However I am old enough to remember that commercial music was pretty awful even back in the 1970s; which is regarded as a peak for rock and roll. I blame auto tune and quantization.

@@NicholasStein Wow you read my mind thx! Now one more mystery you think JB did it with his fingers without pick on the record?
@NicholasStein
@NicholasStein Жыл бұрын
@@frabber321 I started with why GK can do it without a whammy bar. ICBW but I think Blow By Blow was recorded with a Tele with no whammy and a pick. JB has always used his fingers even with the yardbirds an switched to using his thumb more over time. He still used a pick from time to time. Wes Montgomery used his thumb. Most flamenco players use their hands instead of a pick. In my own playing I have been using fingers more and more. But I still use a pick. It’s the sound, not the technique. JB had the sound. GK has the sound. It’s all good.
