We always love the back to back tasting videos. While Shiranui is one of our favorites its hard to beat a ripe Gold nugget mandarin. Thanks for posting the comparison.

Thanks for the comparison sampling. You always do such a great job. I have tangelos and tangerines. I would describe their flavor as being more "wild" in nature. Sweet but with high acidity and more complex flavors. The tangelo peels easily, but the tangerines are a little more challenging to peel. I'll have to give the Shiranui a try. Great video!

I am a gardener in the houston area and this video is very helpful, there are so many types of satsumas and mandarins and tangerines but its very difficult to decide which to choose to buy and grow! I heard sumo was great and since your wife likes it the best maybe i will buy one of those (because i am a wife too 😅) ! Thanks!

Thanks for the comparisons. I’ll mark pixie off my list. I’d love to get a Gold Nugget tree in TX, but they can’t be imported. I do however have seedlings from shiranui and Gold Nugget, so maybe in 7 years I’ll get some flowers.

Great to know fresh Shiranui is where it's at. I noticed in the stores the quality is inconsistent. Another reason to grow your own.

Awesome, great comparison Greg. The one I’m missing and can’t find it anywhere is the Shiranui. I planted a Pixie last year in ground. It had about 1/2 a dozen and your are right, they’re sweet and great. But got to give it to the Gold Nugget. Sweet, a little tart, rich juicy flavor. The oils and fragrance when peeling is awesome. Do you grow any of the other Gold varieties? Shasta, Yosemite, Tahoe?

Thank you, Daniel. I don't grow any of the Gold series. I've tasted them all and I like them all, but they don't quite earn a spot in my yard for various reasons.

I have seen Shiranui at Armstrong Garden Centers in Glendora. they are produced by Menlo Growers. i bought a shiranui tree and also have it budded on a mature tree. in my opinion Shasta and Tahoe Gold are better than any shiranui i have tried. the ones off my tree are ok . I planted a Yosemite Gold last summer so i havent tasted the fruit yet but it is the most vigorous of the TDE's.

Thanks! A very informative video. Question: I know Gold Nuggets have a very long hang time, but don’t know about Sumos. Do they still taste good after hanging on the tree for a few months after ripening?

It depends on your taste preference, but to me the Sumos/Shiranuis get too intensely sweet in the late spring if I let them hang on the tree that long. More details in my profile: gregalder.com/yardposts/the-shiranui-mandarin-tree-a-profile/

I probably wont get to grow any of these, but I love and miss our old-fashioned tangerines, the kind we used to get for Christmas, or anytime from Thanksgiving to late winter. So just in case I have the opportunity, i am trying to find out what varieties for those old-fashioned mandarins? Dancy tangerines? Murcott? Golden Nugget? I'd like to grow shiranui, but they seem like theyd be very complicated, and probably not do well in a Florida climate.

The old-fashioned tangerines that used to be grown widely in California that were ready for Christmas were the Dancy variety. My grandparents have a nice Dancy tree in their yard.

@@gregalderdotcom I'm hoping to get the opportunity to plant some in Florida! It's not necessarily likely to happen, but not completely impossible. Thank you for your help.

I didn’t have a mandarin in my citrus collection, but picked up a Kishu after seeing your review. How would a Kishu compare to these?
@gregalderdotcom
@gregalderdotcom Жыл бұрын
Hi Gigi, Kishu has an earlier harvest season. We have already eaten all of the Kishus off of our two trees. Kishu is much smaller in fruit size and tree size, peels even more easily than those three, and has a mild sweet flavor more like Pixie.

Kishu in Orange County was between the size of a big marble and a golf ball. After easy peeling, I'd eat each half in one chewing each they were scrumptiously sweet ( and seedless). If I remember correctly, I ate them from November & December. Very sweet.

Do you have an opinion about Page Mandarins? I've been thinking about planting one (in a pot). Thanks!

I don't grow Page but I've had fruit off friends' trees. They have great flavor; the downside is numerous seeds.
