To do successful scicomm on stage or screen you’ve got to not just be a great story writer, but also a great story teller. In this ‘Talking Science’ course video I give you 9 tips to help deliver an engaging science talk. // Grab the free worksheet at www.gregfoot.com/youtubecourse
I’m Greg Foot, a Science Presenter on BBC TV & Radio plus various channels here on KZfaq, and this is the first ever KZfaq Course on Science Communication.
Over a series of 10 videos I introduce tips & techniques to help you talk with the public about anything from the world of science, technology, engineering and maths. The course has a focus on helping practising scientists communicate their work with non-experts, but I’ve written it to also be useful to anyone interested in science communication.

Hi! This is great content, thanks for making it. I’ve got a question regarding talking in front of an audience and making eye contact. I often see my audience focusing on the slides rather than me when I’m giving scientific talks to scientists for example. I find it distracting because sometimes I see people shaking their heads or looking bored. When someone does reciprocate eye contact I get flustered... so I resolve by looking in between people. Do you have any tips on how to stay focused and reduce my own emotional reaction from trying to make eye contact? Does it happen to other people or is it just me ?!

1. 1:30 Your talk is just the tip of the preparation iceberg. 2. 2:48 Be contagious. 3. 3:47 But you do you. 4. 4:37 Ponder the paralanguage. 5. 5:36 Create Rhythm, then change it up. 6. 7:19 Don't stress over body language. 7. 8:36 Be visible. 8. 10:10 The eyes have it. 9. 11:06 It's a talk, not TV.
