Although Apple was behind in the ai arms race, Apple Intelligence might end up being one of the most substantial developments we have seen in artificial intelligence. Not because of the ai features it enables, but how it enables them in an accessible way with what could be the biggest ai user base yet.

I trust apple... but when I think about it I don't really know why. Like what's to stop someone being employed who works maliciously within the company. Personally I don't really care much about person data (madness I know but ... I'm not that interesting lol) so I don't loose sleep but for those that do I always find it interesting that apple says 'trust us' and we do. But if another company says 'trust us' we go nope they must be up to something evil. The irony this time is open ai is seen as one of the untrustworthy companies (again dunno why lol) but now they have partnered with apple and we just take their word for it that its all secure haha

I use ChatGPT almost daily. Not once have I been asked to provide my contacts or any personal information. But Apple does seem to be doing a better job at integrating language models into the OS and apps. Those are just not the features I’ll be using the most when the new OSes are released. Instead, I’m looking forward to using Notes on a new iPad, the new hiking features in Maps and discarding my current password manager.

I disagree on the image generation. Everyone keeps showing the goofy images in the iMessage example, but what looks very useful is when you are working on a keynote, it will look at the context of the slides and create relevant images for your presentation. Obviously you wouldn’t use this in place of real world images where applicable, but to quickly create visually interesting slides, this would save a ton of time. Plus the models can be continuously updated via system updates to provide more styles and improve quality. Also keep in mind this is happening locally on device within seconds, so to create even this quality at the start is impressive and will only get better as models are refined and hardware improves.

Even when the OS's are released as final, Apple Intelligence will be still in beta, and US English to start. So in a few years when you're ready to upgrade, Apple Intelligence will be even better. If you want these processor-intensive features, you will need a more recent phone or iPad or Mac. It's the same with the "Pro" moniker -- those devices have the best of the best processors and features. My iPad mini I can tell runs slower than my iPhone, so there's no way I'd expect to be able to run this kind of tech on an iPad mini.

They were never behind. They had AI in other forms like ML running several features of native apps, but they didn't market it as heavily before because it's brought to the user to use seamlessly within the apps. They now just have to market it as AI (of course with their own spin on it) but to your point, it's all about privacy, and why shouldn't these LMMs be able to perform on local data that isn't sent elsewhere to be processed. I've been waiting for YEARS for this type of stuff, and really hope it's more like Vision Pro than Siri, that surprises and delights by actually working. Only a few times not working and people will stop using altogether.

The rest the user base can choose ChatGPT and potentially other LLM’s.

The two features that I think will give Apple Intellegence the most value are Adding support for any developer to use Apple Intellegence in their updated apps and the way that Apple implemented ChatGPT, which allows Apple to add different third-party platforms in the future or will allow the user to add a third-party platform in the future. This could start an upgrade cycle of all of Apple's products to a level that will run Apple's intelligence, pushing new users to Apple products. I agree that Apple jumped years ahead in AI hardware devices.

Don’t get me wrong, Apple does make some nice hardware and since they control all of that experience, their software is better than Android with that all inclusive experience. So, if you’re in the Apple ecosystem, its nice to have everything working together most of the time, but know that your are paying more for it too. As I get older and see Apple for what they do, I’m not so enthusiastic about what they say every year at WWDC. It never lives up to the hype.

Yes, Apple Intel killed any desire to buy a macbook now. While it can work on older machines, I anticipate it’ll be taxing on machines.

The thing that struck me.. beyond the wow, awesome keynote was... Nvidia, I saw no evidence of Nvidia silicon anywhere. It's all going to run (they say) on Apple silicon. Huh.

AI es not a product; ostensibly, AI is NOT an Oracle that knows-it-all. A lot of companies get it wrong. AI systems are an improvement of old systems with semantics and intelligent action, Apple seems to be going this way. We'll see if it gets "there"

Hard disagree on branding. “Apple Intelligence” is too many syllables, users will opt to call it something shorter like “AI” or “Apple’s AI” if they want to really specify. Apple knocked it out of the part with “facetime”, as a catchier term for video call/chat, I doubt apple intelligence will be so catchy

How can you suggest Apple is when they’re under contract to use other companies models?
@hummersd

Think of it more like Google being the default search engine, which Alphabet pays Apple billions a year. ChatGPT is probably doing the same by being the primary partner (or remember Cingular Wireless was the first carrier for iPhone first gen?). Eventually they'll allow other company's models to be added. Walk before running. And here's where I already see disinformation conflating OpenAI with all-things Apple Intelligence. There's a distinction. The basic features on-device are all based on Apple's LLM. Then there's a more advanced one that Apple still runs, but is sent to the cloud (Private Cloud Compute). Then the third option is that partnership with ChatGPT to be able to use the largest set of data that they use -- but you need to opt-in each time, OR you can login to your existing account with ChatGPT and presumably you wouldn't need to opt-in since you're paying ChatGPT already and have signed-off on terms and conditions. This is where it gets hairy with privacy, but in trusting Apple, they wouldn't partner with OpenAI unless they signed strict contracts.

Most of Apple Intelligence is their own models. Only exception is the ChatGPT integration, used when Apple Intelligence thinks it can’t be of much help with a specific task and asks your permission to share the task forward to GPT-4o.

You nailed all of this at the end of your video, if Apple intelligence actually works as advertised. Siri is not a digital assistant, Siri sucks and not in a good way. But Siri was advertised as a digital assistant, when did Siri come out? Long ago, Apple had had plenty of time to fix Siri.

Excellent analysis. The problem with OpenAI is that it was respectable till it was about a consortium of companies who wanted to define industry standards based AI. The moment Microsoft invested in it I saw massive restrictions coming up in future where it will be tightly integrated with Microsoft ecosystem's and they will kill competition. Elon musk is the only smart guy who also is genuine in software tech space . Microsoft s nadela is a businessmen who just understands technology and wants to dominate as many areas of software technology as possible , which according to me is simply IBM 2.0 which dominated software industry till Microsoft releases MSDOS. now Google and apply are yet to tame the dominant beast called Microsoft that has many slaves like Linus tech tips under their belt. the future is open architecture ( AWS which focuses on Linux/ open source databases / container based solutions / Google chrome that runs everywhere / etc) based services for masses and specialized closer architecture for niche customers ( like Apple ecosystem).

As said by someone on another KZfaq channel, Apple should now DEFINITELY REMOVE the label "Pro" from the iPad line-up! iPadOS it's ridiculous and NOT pro at all. When (and IF) we'll see a TRUE file system, a TRUE multitasking and virtual memory management, a TRUE support for actual mouses and mouse pointer, a TRUE handling of external peripherals and a TRUE external monitor support, THEN and ONLY them they could stick the "Pro" label back again.

I'm optimistic too. And I like art generation better than you did. I plan to use it a lot to help me with designs for my glass mosaics. If they come thru on 90% of what they promised, they'll sell out the store and up their market share. And I would expect surprisingly cool capabilities coming month after month for the next few years.

I like ur honesty at the end. We have to take apple at their word. This stuff not even in beta yet. Could be trash like Siri. All about the execution. All they accomplished at the moment was a very well done keynote presentation. However, apple definitely succeeded again at marketing n privacy marketing.

What is going to happen with Siri on HomePods that can’t do simple things. Are we going to have to wait and Buy new products with M1 chips? For me I want the HomePods to be able to complete requests especially since I have many many of them. But of course they will not receive the update and will be years before they work requiring you to ditch the old with new. Apple did not mention this as they will not work and don’t want to make buyers mad they will still not work.
