0:00 Intro song
3:15 Overview
6:50 Playability
11:42 String gauges & setup
14:19 Hardware & pickups
18:46 New Faces In The Dark
Gear used:
Gretsch Baritone G5260 in metallic cherry (the colour is very important!). Running into my Audient iD14.
For the intro song, I'm boosting with my Earthquaker Plumes OD. For the Loathe cover, it's the Nembrini Audio Klon clone for the boost. Neural DSP Plini for the main rhythm sounds on both. GGD Zilla Cabs for the IRs.
Bass is my random P-bass knock-off with Lace Pickups Nate Newton Riffblasters.
Vocals are my Shure SM7B running straight into the Audient.
The main drum sound for the intro song is GGD Periphery IV and the Loathe cover uses the GGD Modern & Massive with the VK copper snare (plus some additional samples on the kick and snare).
Synths are mostly the TAL-Un-O-LX (a great Roland Juno emulation) plus Surge XT (fantastic freeware synth) and Dexed (Yamaha DX-7 emulation).

@@jirosaves_theworld it's definitely an issue if they are really only playing for 30 seconds and talking for 15 minutes, but sponsorships are an important aspect of your typical youtubers income. Most can't just do this in their free time, and they can't charge you directly for their efforts. The least we can do is let them throw a sponsorship in there somewhere. You can just skip past it haha.

What an awesome review! The level of quality, care, detail, and attention to production value is just next level. Totally sold on at least giving one of these a shot at some point in the future, especially considering my Chapman ML1 baritone has left some things to be desired as far as tuning stability in the Loathe realm (despite being 28" I still find myself using the Digitech Drop to tune down the rest of the way for some songs, still a great guitar though). Stoked to see what's next, and proud to be you 1000th subscriber!

Thank you very much! The original mix slaps but it's all personal preference at this level The original is very bass guitar heavy which wouldn't work for a guitar demo, so I've pulled the rhythm guitars up compared to the original Plus the sum of 1000 tiny decisions made when recording and mixing all the tracks!

I so agree on the B to B tuning this thing came with. So, my story with it. I was in my local store, just kinda browsing. In a mood for impulse buy. And I see this thing. I never had a baritone, but always wanted one. Knew about them pretty well. So I thought why not. It's not expensive. Grab it, start noodling in the store. And it feels AGONIZING to play. It comes with stock strings of 14 to 72. Yes, seventy two. It was stiff as you know what. Grab my phone, google some alternative baritone tunings(remember, at that point I'm still clueless?). Decide to just keep going lower in standard. Arrive at A standard. And it was night and day. Suddenly it's agreeable, soft, pleasant. The lower you go the more comfortable these become to play. And that's coming from somebody who often finds 12s on a strat in E standard perfectly fine. Gorgeous cleans for massive deep chords. Great for texture work. Great for chugs. I ended up buying it, and exploring it a bunch more. So, my recommendation is if you grab one to try in the store - forget about B to B. It'll ruin your impression of how good this can feel to play.

27 inch and 11-54 is perfect for B Standard, and feels the same as 9-42 on a 25.5 inch in Standard. I can't even imagine 72s on a 29.75 for B Standard. That would be way too stiff.

Thanks for the video! I picked up the Bigsby version in midnight sapphire - beautiful instrument and came perfectly set up. Owned it for around 6 months and I really enjoy it. I agree on the scale length - I also go for the 5th fret and end up at the 7th. The scale is almost identical to my Hofner bass. It plays really well, I usually keep it B to B. I have no issues with the pickups.

This vid was a huge help. The only concern I have is the pups because I tend to use clean tones a lot with home recordings, but I think overall this guitar checks so many other boxes for me that I'm going to grab one. The scale length is a huge selling point for me, partly because I fuss over intonation more than most(also a consequence of recording with clean tones, because its harder to hide intonation imperfections). I'm also inclined to get it down to the octave E, if not F#, so I should get away with it. Otherwise, amazing job on the riffs/covers. Your recordings are very good.

Thanks man, I appreciate it If I'm honest there's nothing particularly special I'm doing with the guitar tone I'm running straight in to my iD14 then using a Klon plugin for some upper-mid edge and then into the Neural DSP Omega Granophyre and the GGD Zilla cabs Honestly, you could probably sub that out for any other high gain, but mids-forward, amp and cab setup (the album used the Archetype Plini plugin with the ML Sound Labs Mikko cab plugin) The biggest thing to get right is the overall mix and specifically the interaction between the guitars and the bass (the album mix has a TONNE of bass guitar... It's as prominent, if not more prominent than the rhythms in a lot of places) The guitars themselves don't have a tonne of low end, they're really focused on the mids

Best part of this guitar for me is the pickups. I have the older black sparkle version with the plain wood neck & bigsby tuned to G# standard, it came as a bass VI E-e. Since I run it into a memory boy analog delay I don't have to worry about clipping my cleans. The neck pickup is a bit muddy but I like it with fuzzes, especially octave ones. Still going to experiment with it though haha. Great video, your song at the end slammed. These guitars are so much better than the squier Jazzmasters for me at least, I played one at a shop in Canada and hated it!

You're the only other person I've heard say loves the pickups, me too! It's interesting how they pivoted the range from bass VI to baritone (even though it's so much more suited to the bass VI thing)

@@AdamTrain I have been trying so hard to find/make a preset to get my gretsch sounding as nice and filthy as I know it can but I haven't been fully successful yet... I'm using a Helix. I'm loving it in the lower E1-F range though. I'm using Ernie ball 90-20guage

You definitely need a bit more volume boost than you would with other guitars I use mine with a Helix in live environments and I really like the Line 6 Badonk model (apparently inspired by the iconic Line 6 Big Bottom from the POD XT but I don't hear it... Either way it's a great sounding model) and I really like the Placater Dirty (inspired by the Friedman Browneye). In terms of a boost, I usually use my Earthquaker Plumes with a bit more volume and gain than I would on other guitars. Believe the latest firmware added a model of the Plumes that might be worth trying out! Also had great luck boosting with a Klon-style pedal (the Minotaur in the Helix is very good), the extra treble boost can really help you cut through In my experience, it's all about controlling the low end so things don't get too flubby. The bassist still needs room to shine through!

@@AdamTrain thanks my bro. I have been playing around with the Badonk and Minotaur and I'm really liking it. I've been using a Gain block to boost the guitar into the amp by a few DB as well as a tube scream on 0gain high level to tighten up the sound too.

Bought some Gotoh SG381 MG-T Magnum Lock 3-a-side machineheads and ditched the very small buttoned stock tuners (fitted by guitar tech Andy Bunn) - 100% improvement with an F#-B-E-A-D-G tuning. Played it for a year (in this tuning) with the standard tuners and it always hurt my fingers - fully recommended.

Absolutely love this video! Earlier today I just tuned down from A to G and it was like a lightbulb that went off in my head. It's that sound I've been chasing for longer than I'd like to admit lol. I'm still using the 14-72 strings and wanted to ask if I go to 16 to 80 should I still flip the saddle? I don't think I'd be going any lover than F standard. Thanks for the review! I liked and subscribed and look forward to more of your content. Have an awesome day, sir!

There's just something primal about those low tunings! Re: flipping the bridge saddle, I think you've just got to try it. Swapping it is a very quick job (just loosen the string enough that you can tuck it out your way) You can always try intonating it before you flip it. If it works, happy days. If not, you can flip the saddle to squeeze out a few more millimeters
