videos of you doing the work are so important to us novices. I hate it when other KZfaqrs skip that part, it's like they don't want any comments on the way they put things together. well done on the upside-down soldering.

Hi Greg Looking back to my van build, I’d say your advice about these tanks was invaluable. I fitted both my shower and sink with 40mm solvent weld. It drains beautifully. It’s just yet another bit of your advice which made my life easier following behind you. There is one bit of advice which I wish I hadn’t followed (nothing to do with water) but I’m saving that for a beer meet-up and a laugh. Keep well you and regards to Lou.

Thanks for the excellent advice, it's really helpful for when I can afford to do one of these conversions. One thing I thought of was perhaps put some waxoyl on the jubilee clips that hold the shower waste. I realise it's a small point but I've had problems with rusted out jubilee clips in all sorts of applications and thought that might stop some issues down the line. Anyway please keep the vids coming, you're experience is gonna save me a ton of money when I can eventually get one done

We got our tanks from CAK Tanks and they provided a great service. Picked the tanks up from them as I was passing by them due to work, and they provided some really sound advice. Also to note on the size of the connections provided, they will install any size diameter based upon your needs. I had the waste tank made up with a 40mm inlet. It really depends how well the engine has been looked after and what type of driving it has been subjected too. A regularly service engine with proof of regular oil changes etc and steady motorway miles can go on your thousands of miles. At the end of day an engine can be changed so the condition of the body work and chassis is very critical as a lot of cans do rust very easily. If you can get a clean van with service history that is the best option.

Great work again. I'd be wary of the drain tap bracket. You need to insulate the steel screws from the stainless bracket to avoid galvanic corrosion. Another method is a 2 piece bracket with the lower section being sacrificial. Only highlighting as I came across this very issue on a van last week. The LPG filler was mounted in the same way and had corroded the sill to the pint of collapse.

I intend to use pvc conduit inside the van and underneath to create cable raceways. One thing I never see anyone do is install “pull strings” in their vans so they can pull extra cables if needed in the future. You just pull a string through each one and leave it where it’s accessible on either end. If you need to pull a new cable through, you attach the cable and a new string to your pull string such that you have another string available later if needed.
@GregVirgoe
@GregVirgoe Жыл бұрын
We did that in our installation and show using a vacuum to feed the string through first. We also have PVC trunking for cables in the floor void.

julie hughes there are two types of refillable cylinder for under the van. One is a horizontal cylinder laying down sideways and would go behind the rear diff where my fresh water tank is. The other type is shaped like a wheel and would go where your spare tyre is. That means you have to find a place to put the spare wheel either on the back doors or roof rack. Both tanks have larger capacity and are safer being outside. www.gasit.co.uk/gasit-vapour-gas-refillable-products.html

Many thanks for your explanatory video Greg, such a great help for a first van conversion! I am planning my water system, and watched your videos about cutting the holes for the outside inlets for the water, gas etc... I will also have a CAK underslung tank, but I don't quite understand how/where exactly the filling pipe will run from the tank outlet to the side of van for an outside filling point. I understand the filling point has to be higher than the tank obviously, and it seems like I would have to first, cut a hole in the floor of the van to pass the pipe from the underslung tank, then run the pipe inside the side of the van and then cut another hole obviously for the outside filling point? I am actually wondering if there is a way to avoid passing the pipe first inside the van through the floor? I have actually not been able to find any detailed video of the route of the pipe from the tank to the outside filling point and I was wondering if you could tell me how you did and if I got it right? Thank you so much in advance, all the best!

The usual quality job from you, nicely done. Personally, I'd replace the trap with a Hepvo valve. They are waterless valves (so no risk of freezing) and probably ideal for van builds. A Hepvo for the shower too, at that. Winterizing your van is a bit of a job now, since you have water trapped in the pipes at all times.
@GregVirgoe
@GregVirgoe 4 жыл бұрын
Croft I have fitted loads of those valves through work and occasionally get called back because they get stuck open with some debris, soap buildup or food waste and don’t seal properly then end up smelling. We live in our van full time so never need to winterise it as it’s constantly being used. It’s far more simple and less maintenance to have a water trap in the pipe. In two years of constant use I’ve not had a single problem with this system so can say from experience that its simplicity just works. 😊

Ah yes, the rivnuts in the solar panels 😃 you guys have got a lovely van. That spray foam is going to be amazing for insulation and sound deafening too. Have you gone through CAK list of tanks. What I would do is measure the space you have available and send them an email. They may have a tank that will suit the space without going bespoke on it.

I'm assuming you're remaining in the UK for the next while? I'm OK, as well. I was in Florida for two months, helping to minimize my elderly mother's exposure to Coronavirus. While that was difficult psychologically, I did complete a couple of projects that add to my skill set. The biggest accomplishment was replacing the 21-year old central air conditioning unit on mom's house. I'd installed mini-splits previously, but not an entire central A/C system. Doing the work myself saved mom $5,550, and will save money on every monthly electricity bill from now on!

I wouldn’t change much it really does work well but these few things I would do. 1. Fit Maxxfan Deluxe they are incredible fans. 2. Fit underslung lpg tank safer and more capacity. 3. Simplify the electrics cut down on 230 sockets and fit more 12v sockets and USB points. 4. Add an external shower point at the back of the van. 5. For a single traveller I wouldn’t have a shower cubicle.

Another great explanation Greg but I have a question. Do they not make back-flow connectors for those exit hoses so the water can only go down and not back up? Is that not a good idea anyway since it may be possible for the grey water to be full and the van to be off balance. I know these exists for home plumbing but not sure if they do for smaller systems like this.

As always a great informative video Greg. Ta. I have a commercial van conversion which allways had water sitting in the shower drain run. When the van braked it would throw this water up through the shower plug hole which was a pain! (Usually store a few things in the shower when we are driving). Ended up fitting a non return valve close to the shower drain. Had to weaken the spring to make it sensitive enough for the water to drain away (not much of a fall to the tank). Working so far but if it becomes unreliable I was thinking about using a small electric waste pump? All the best!
@GregVirgoe
@GregVirgoe 4 жыл бұрын
When I brake the tray sits behind the waste tank so if anything the water goes into the tank and not the other way. I drive really steady so it’s never been a problem. You might find a Hep2o trap would work better in your situation.
