Nice video, I'm a 72 year old man north of you, in Montana. I spend time in grizzly country on my horses every year. Since my dogs are big running pointing dogs, they stay home. The tip about high lines is a good one. I killed a nice bull last month, and my younger brother and I quartered the elk, loaded the meat on my two horses and walked off the mountain. I don't know if it gets any better than that. I think you'll be riding when you get to my age, just stay in shape and take care of your body. Have a good day, you earned a subscriber.

That is so great that you had the opportunity to experience this type of outdoor adventure. The scenery is amazing and the chance encounter with a 72 yr old outdoorsman is inspiring! Wow 72! Kudos to his wife (and yours!) for supporting the adventures! Thank you for sharing it with all of us!

Good video, solid info. I put in for 63 this year, hoping I draw a tag. I got charged by a griz in Hellroaring (north of Yellowstone) several years ago. I was holding onto two horses (lead rope in each hand) after taking them to water at the creek. Luckily, I was able to scare him off. I stepped it off, he was 28 feet from me when he quit his charge and took off the other way. Interesting experience!

I would love to see a video detailing your high line set up. Equipment, location tips, spacing if multiple horses etc. any tips on introducing horses to high lines. Loving your channel, keep it up!

I take my blue heeler when I am camping, she hates bears and will run them off or die trying. I live smack in the middle of where they dump problem grizzlies so every ride is a ride in bear country and I have had loads of bear encounters over the years. Had two or three earlier this year alone. 99.99% of encounters end up with the bear running off, it's the 0.01% that you carry a gun for or they will wreck your day. My equine vet told me not to use bear spray from horseback because if the horse inhales it their lungs can become inflamed and it can end up killing them due to their immune reaction to the irritant in their lungs. I have never had a bear challenge me on horseback, they have always run. The only times I have ever had serious issues with them is on the ground away from the horses. My camp gun is a Mossberg 590 with slugs, same gun I used clearing buildings in the Marine Corps because it has never let me down and my life has relied on it working a number of times.

We’ve got land in southeast Oklahoma. Pretty country but nothing like that. I’d kill to go on several days rise through that country

Dogs bring pissed grizzly right back to you in camp. There's people in both camps but in my opinion depending on the breed and demeanor it's most likely to bring trouble to you.

Fair points. Kind of the same as electric fences (which we didn’t use). Some people say use them, others have had Grizzlies get on the inside of one and tear camp apart. The dog I took is a border collie that doesn’t wander much and doesn’t bark. Really calm demeanor but doesn’t growl or bark unless something comes into camp. 5 Stars. Would take him again.

Home bases are Utah and Wyoming. I would put money down that we’re not as tough as Alaskans. I’ve known some Alaskans and you people are a tougher breed.

I have to laugh; my daughter recently had an encounter a grizzly and ended up throwing the cannister at the bear and hit it in the face with the cannister. The grizzly ran off.

so one of my daughters lives in Big Sky in the winter. All she told me was she ran into a grizzly and like a grown up grabbed her cannister of bear spray and instead of spraying it she threw it with out thinking and hit the bear in the face ( she has always had good aim) It didn't like it at all and it ran away and she was fine. Emphasis on she was fine because she doesn't want me to worry. Last winter she was walking to work in the dark wearing a head lamp looking at the ground so she wouldn't fall and walked right into the side of a moose that was browsing along the trial. So I imagine it was a similar situation both she and the bear panicked @@Stonefieldranch As for bear spray I think, my mustang would object more to me spraying bear spray than shooting while mounted. Of course I live in rural California and only have to deal with black bears. Loud singing off-key usually works.

Excellent video. Surroundings are stunning. You always take a dog into bear country. That’s your warning system as well as deflection. A dog can make the difference between coming out alive or being drug off and killed. Good grief !!!!

Oh really? 45-70 you say? So, you claim to be a bear killing expert using a 45-70 let's see all of your own dead bear photos with you holding the weakest of 45 cal rifles 45-70 ! I am an Alaska guide doing brown bear guided hunts I have my Alaskan photos on my Instagram account to prove what I say is fact not KZfaq groupie BS parrot mouth talk . No way in hell would be using a 45-70 or a shotgun from what I have seen these bears take of vital organ bullets hits from 338s - 375s and even 458 Lott.

@@Stonefieldranch As an Alaska hunting guide for 30 years and been on over 100 brown bear kills the 45-70 never would I consider one. I am using a 338 win mag - 9.3x62 Mauser - AR 10 in 375 WSM and a Weatherby 375 magnum. Going with ignorant KZfaq parrot mouth talking fads by idiots that never been there of done that can get people killed !
