Part of his genius is he doesn’t just make the beats, he is the sole credit on this song. He came up with the MV concept and is a visual story teller. So many details from things like the rooster he was born in the year of the rooster and both Daechwita and this have it. His choice of location is a place in Thailand which was known as the Thieves Market and was were slaves were sold. Don’t tell me people who have the attention to every detail they do didn’t do that in purpose. Soooo much to dig into. Even smoking. It is the biggest no no for a kpop idol to ever get caught smoking. It’s illegal to show people lighting a cigarette on Korean tv and he said fuck it and did it to break the ban on it. A historical place where freed former slaves sell the stuff they were given or stole upon being set free. - Now link that back to the story in the music video and the lyrics. Someone stealing, corrupt powers and institutions, killing to feed yourselves, freedom, enslavement. (6) Talking about freedom and indulgence while the MV shows him smoking = many talk about how a simple act of smoking for adult male idols is sufficient for them to be criticised by some kpop fandom and the korean media. Which is over the top and toxic. It reminds me of a 30 year old idol from the early 2000 who cried in frustration as he was hounded by the media and fans for having a girlfriend. That’s right. The 30 year old had a love life. There is a clip of it somewhere I am sure which was hard to watch as his mother sat next to him crying too during a press conference. EXTREMELY UNNECESSARY SUFFERINGS in that industry resulting in the demise of many. And for what? Anyway. This is what this song does to some of us. Think deeply, feel strongly. The word “Haegeum” triggered a lot of curiosity after the track was released, and it has a double meaning. On one side, it’s a traditional Korean string instrument that has a very peculiar sound. Haegeum is a traditional Korean string instrument with two strings, kind of "folksy" and often used to portray a lot of emotion. It can ALSO mean "break a ban" or "liberation". This song is a kind of sequel to Daechwita, another amazing song/MV of his - Daechwita means the official, traditional music played when the king/emperor arrives, or when his army arrives on official business, so in many ways the very opposite of haegeum.

Suga once said that a BTS album isn't complete without at least one song that criticizes society. Even their debut song, "No More Dream", released when most of them were still teens, was a criticism towards their fellow teens, most of whom just follow the life plan that adults have set for them, without having any dreams of their own. almost all of his songs are soooo deep and meaningful... that's what i'm looking for in his music - strong and very talented lyricism. yoongi is such a talented character, such a good songwriter and producer. that's why he was my first EVER bias in kpop. his every solo song is a masterpiece, and his new album got me thinking a lot about the stuff that i was thinking about recently and also that i wasn't even aware of. music can be so various sometimes, and i'm actually happy that i can appreciate all of the genres of it, as well as listen to it constantly...

The way he produced the beat around the actual instrument Haegeum, the subject matter, the delivery, I love this guy sm! Yes...BTS is sooo misunderstood... they've always been pushing the envelope for what kpop idols can do, swearing, writing their own songs,talking about every topics, drinking (Jimin not Jin in his album where there's set me free 2), suicidal thoughts, societal issues, that's literally their foundation, why they have the following they have and they are always taking huge artistic liberties (as a group and even more solo) since day 1 (The first video on bangtantv channel is literally a freestyle by RM telling young people to vote😂)! They'd collab with the biggest artists one day, and with the most underground guy the other, they don't care they just keep their artistic integrity! Always. This song is the primary example, it's a haegeum= freeing yourself and he intentionally smoked (which is not possible in kpop) because he said if a 30 year old can't lit up a cig in an mv without backlash there's an issue with how some people view idols! They fall under more this lineage of artists in a gray area between indie artists and idols (like Seo Taiji, Epik High...)! That's why they've always been rejected by K-pop, K-pop fans and misunderstood by people outside! Anyways oversimplying because could go on for hours on this thanks for the reaction 😂

It took me about 2 hours to get through the D-Day album, because I had to stop and think/ponder/question. BTS and all the individual members have always had this effect on me. Correction: not just me, but millions of others also. They have trained us to question and think.

3:50 Honestly, I think a lot of people who are just hearing about BTS or who are relatively new to KPOP, have this view of them. And I understand that, because they are experiencing a time in which BTS are not necessarily universally loved, but are definitely revered. I think its because they have reached a certain level of critical acclaim... but it hasn't always been that way. For me, BTS are examples of authenticity even in a highly curated industry and I think it has a lot to do with their history as musicians and artists (and their journey through different 'sounds'), but also as individuals who were working really hard for a fighting chance at the beginning of the careers and very well could have been one of the groups to never make it, had they not pushed through the adversities. In general, I love that KPOP is so insistent on introducing new sounds and allowing groups to step into different genres- but BTS really take this to the next level. They are not monolithic, but instead are artists who place value in honouring the different parts of ones identity... and that's why something like their "Love Yourself" campaign actually worked and had significant cultural impact; because they lead by example and create art that is sometimes fun/groovy, tragic/cathartic or otherwise speaks about real societal issues. We all have those sides to us, its what make us human, and BTS really isn't afraid to share those sides of them. So often artists feel constrained by the formulas of their industry or they experience success and then feel pressured to continue making work in only one way, but in many ways BTS opened up a lot of freedom within the industry for future generations of KPOP to create in an authentic way and speak more openly about their thoughts, both personal and about the world. Of course they still are careful with their image to some extent and have a lot of unfair pressure placed on them (which they every now and again are quite vocal about)... perhaps thats a bit of what comes with being on the world stage in this age unfortunately, but I think they have built an incredibly dedicated relationship with their fan base through years of being honest and caring towards their fans...and in turn, their fanbase is proud to watch them grow and explore different sides of themselves.

Do you know what I love the more in BTS discography? It's almost impossible just listen to it and go on. Most of their songs (group or solos) have a deep message. Suga / Agust D is the sharper and rawer. He doesn't mince his words... and I love this because I admire his wisdom! If you like this kind of rap, I suggest you listen to the whole album, imo, it's a masterpiece!

Almost all of BTS’s tracks have a deep meaning like this and many criticize the government and society and the self/ego. That’s actually a major reason why they are my favorite group, because their songs and messages are so meaningful and reflective. (Also Yoongi’s anti-capitalist agenda lol) Most of their songs are very philosophical and are tied together in some way, even if they have an upbeat/more pop sound. An example is anpanman! Very cute and bubbly song about a children’s tale, until you look up the meaning of the lyrics lol. I also think I suggested Yoongi’s (Agust D/Suga) song ‘first love’ to you on Patreon a while ago. I'm so glad you reacted to this and your reaction didn't disappoint. I always enjoy your in depth dissection of tracks so please, please don't ever stop them. Everything in this MV has deeper meaning. Even the chopsticks are a commentary on feudalism and the idea that the thing that sets you free/lets you find success will eventually become the thing you need to survive. As in, he uses the chopsticks as a weapon to pull off his heist but then later, has to use those same chopsticks to feed himself. All of Agust D/Suga's tracks have deeper meanings. He's an amazing producer and lyricist, and I highly recommend you check out more of his work. The tracks on D-Day are all incredible - Snooze is particularly impactful in a very different way from Haegeum and is easily my personal favorite, but as a huge fan of Woosung (the vocalist featured on the track), I'm a bit biased there. "This is a little deep for a track like this" Hard rap does not have to have empty lyrics,it use to be very conscious and thoughtful music until the current generation perverted the genre with shallow lyrics about women, drugs, and money. It's okay to talk about those things, but it is HOW you talk about it. BTS using their lyrics to express what they appreciate about women, to make people think about what money does to us as people, and call out rappers who try to make drug use cool. Songs do not have to be slow or melodic to be meangingful. That is what I love about RM and Suga's music

The title of the song is a wordplay: Haegeum (해금) in Korean is a traditional string instrument, the one that was used in the song. But if you look at the meaning of the Chinese characters (解禁) which literal is spelled "haegeum" it means "lifting a ban". Which is consistent with the lyrics, is freedom the end of prohibition? Is my freedom at the same level of your freedom? This MV is the second part of a trilogy of music videos, 1st one is "Daechwita", then "Haegeum", the next will be AMYGDALA which will be premiered next week on the 25th. Your perception of BTS is way off. They have been writing lyrics with this level of depth since their debut album. The topics have changed of course as they grew older and gained more recognition. Since the start they stirred controversy with their school trilogy (2013 - 2014) when their lyrics were mostly about the educational system of South Korean taking a toll in to their nation youth's mental health and the pursue of dreams. Also this is what we would expect of Agust D, his songs are always hard hitting like this. I recommend to check Agust D songs "What do you think?" and "Strange" ft RM.

Its so funny because this is what BTS has been doing since they debuted, calling out the industry, using double meanings in their songs, calling out ignorance and prejudice, etc. It seems like you always hold yourself back from going any farther than reacting to their solo work and I know it's your channel so of course you will react to what you please but if you genuinely gave BTS a chance along with their old songs, you'd see that they never put themselves on a high pedestal or have let their success stop them from speaking on what they want and going against social norms. 12:46 lmaooooo this is bts at its core. They are literally the most educated rappers in the Korean rap industry. They don’t just know how to rap, they know literally everything about rap history and out of all their songs, AT LEAST 90% of their songs are meaningful in some way, and when they are doing diss tracks it’s for a reason. Almost nothing is as it seems when it comes to bts’ mv’s and lyrics. The misconception that bts’ main genre is pop, they have no substance, and they aren’t mature or are in it for the money kills me because their popular English songs were literally just made to make people happy during Covid, and then everyone saw those songs as their whole discography when they’re so much more than that. In fact, the rappers of bts, as they all started in the underground rap and dance scene, are the ones who inspired almost all of the kpop rappers at the moment. Even the vocalists are extremely educated on rap and hiphop history. They’ve been a group for ten years, literally started as a hiphop idol group who were the only ones at that time to call out the older generation and the Korean school system. They were ridiculed for years and years because of their company not having money, the rappers changing from the underground rap industry to the idol industry, even their name was made fun of. BTS are much more mature and talented than what you think, something to learn is to NEVER expect any member of bts not to come out with something calling out society, talking about mental health, or cussing. Honestly in bts it’s no where near a big thing to cuss, so it shouldn’t be shocking when it happens if u read this comment 😂

On the outside BTS may feel like they should be expected to be very idol-like, but that's changing now. So far in their career, and mostly now in their solos their point is to "haegeum". As their influence is at the highest they realize it's up to them to change the industry and break the heavy restrictions and demands on musicians (SUGA said this song is also for the young generation). This song is produced and written by him only. It's solely his, so it is expressing his thoughts, which gives me comfort - knowing that not only the common person feels like this. I mean his rawness and lack of sugar-coating has always made him one of the most relatable members of the group.

I must say that of all the reactions I’ve seen of Heageum, you are one of a few that took the time to dissect the meaning behind the lyrics and visuals. You’re thoughtful of the concepts and themes that SUGA (and other artists) poured so much of himself into and I respect that. I love how in tune you were with the song even before listening to it. You talked about BTS (and idols in general) having a God-like image and not this devilish one and I was like "that's exactly what the song is about 😅". You got the whole Joker vibe two minutes in. BTS has always been rebellious. If you dig into the lyrics, you will find they talk a lot about political issues, societal expectations, mental illnesses and stresses, and while giving hope. Yoongi here is such a philosopher. In fact, I printed a bunch of inspiring Yoongi quotes and hid them all over my house. They are stuck to mirrors, door frames, the stair railing, inside the pantry, etc. He is wise beyond his years. You will find all members of BTS are much more humble and deep than most other artists. I’d love you to deep dive on them.

Their songs as BTS is diverse, but reflects the group/ company's goals. Their songs as solo reflects each as individual and their own toughts. Which is the best of both worlds. Besides loving and respecting each other as bandmates/ family, this might explain why they surely will stay together for many years to come.

There is so many references in this video to his previous song Daechwita. The Dancing after he gets back to his place with the money, the scar on the face, the surprise double-cross ending, etc... This song is a great continuation from the previous song Daechwita. Love it! He has one more song coming that is supposed to be a continuation from this one. Earlier BTS goes harder in the hiphop music. When they matured and became more famous, they've branched out genre wise. It also paid a lot of homage to their influences. Hiphop Lover, Born Singer, Chicken Noodle Soup, etc.

Haegeum” means “allowing/unlocking something that was forbidden.” Here is how he explained it in an interview: The word “Haegeum” came to me when I was young. I played rhythm games, I loved rhythm action games. When beating a certain stage, you’d unlock a forbidden song, then you could play a new rhythm. Putting chopsticks down means die, and in the end August D picks up the chopstics. Also I think the police officer is like the crazy king in Daechwita representing corruption. And the rebelled/here a bit crazy alter ego is killing the corruption/lie.

I think you'd really like "amygdala" and "polar night" night as well from the new album. Amygdala lets you know more about Agust D as a person, while polar night reflects on some of todays societal issues. Both great songs with great lyrics 😊 Amygdala is gonna have a MV too and suga recomended watching Daechwita, Haegeum and Amygdala back to back as they relate to one another.

This is the reaction I was waiting for!!!! Always love your perspective and interpretation on the lyrics and the video/message of the video. But especially the lyrics in rap songs. This song has no business being this deep and profound while sounding like that 😂 it honestly makes me love the song 10 times more! The whole album is a vibe tbh, as expected from Agust D!

Suga and "philosophical rap" go hand in hand every time!! Nothing surprising there and Haegeum is a sequel and modern version to August D's "Daechwita" FYI.

Agust hanging out of the car is a yet another reference to his previous track where he plays the same to characters in his track Daechwita. As are the fact you have 2 Agust D's and the one with the power has the Scar. In Daechwita it's the mad king. In Haegeum it's the Police officer.

The Joker is one of his favorite characters. Theres a Halloween dance practice where he dresses up as the Joker.

The meaning of "haegum" is actually spelled out twice in the lyrics, in the first verse. "Liberation from all that’s forbidden" and "This song’s simply about freeing what’s forbidden".

Not Army. I know the BTS songs everyone knows. This is insane indeed. I love it! I am going to look a little more into the Agust D thing. I loved rap as a teen and then went away from it for a while and now I am remembering, with kpop, that I actually do really love it. Always love to hear Teddy's insights into both the music and the lyrics. This might be my favorite Teddy analysis ever. ❤

I love that you're catching the joker references. In D-2, there's a line in the song People, "why so serious?" and especially that last clip of suga riding in the cop car gave me Joaquin Phoenix - joker vibes.

This video is the second in a trilogy. Suga said to watch Daechwita first, then Haegeum, and then the third video, Amygdala, which is being released this week. My personal take is that the guy in the black suit (from this video) is the guy who killed the crazy king in the Daechwita video. When Agust D went into the restaurant in the last scene, he was carrying that guy's black coat, perhaps as a trophy.

Welcome to Agust D, everything is deep, i love all his solo releases! Also in this MV Suga is sorta two people, you know a criminal but also the mafia leader its kinda like in Daechwita, where he is both the king and the peasant so he positions himself on both sides which i always found so cool :)
