Probably because they want a website instead of a KZfaq channel. Makes no sense in light of how effective KZfaq is at driving sales. It only goes to show the Shareasale folks don't really like to "share a sale.")

Thank you for noticing, and thank you for being a monthly supporter, Mauro! I was trying to add some "serious humor" to the video. :-) And let's face it, people do a lot of reading in that room. By the way, I highly recommend this great book (The Mac Bathroom Reader): amzn.to/3oPzwTV (affiliate link)

That thing is cool James! I've seen Dan @ Mac Rumors with displays like that & I wondered where he got them. Too bad you had to take it apart & clean it, but I agree, the Pros outweigh the Cons. Looks great! Thanks for sharing!

Another great review. I've actually mounted old Apple motherboards in frames to hang in my work room. No black smudges😁
@JDW-
@JDW- Жыл бұрын
In light of the very high $399 price tag, I was very disappointed with the black smudges around the edges of the white paper, primarily because I could see that at the top when I first opened the product. That should have never passed QC. I was able to pretty much hide all of it after carefully re-positioning the main body within the frame, but still. They need to give attention to the little things.

I would never pay this kind of money for something I could make myself buy an old iPhone off eBay take it apart and display its contents in a deep picture frame I can buy almost anywhere here at the many stores where I live! This is a simple art project! I would rather buy a Mac for this amount, but I always enjoy your videos!

Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Michael! I agree that a price point of US$399 is expensive. If you do decide to build one yourself, please be sure to report back and let us know your total cash outlay, including the value of your time to make it. Please also let us know if you are able to find parts as pristine as those you see in my video.I think that would help others who may wish to follow in your footsteps.

Very interesting discussion on just how important the iPhone 2G has been to the growth of Apple to $2 Trillion and, perhaps, the very survival of Apple. Until this video I haven't really thought about that. A dramatic pivot by Apple to a new product and a new industry (phones and communication) for them. How many companies ever do anything like that?

Great job James! I have a few of these and agree on your points. I have been in touch with the Grid team a few times though and found them pretty responsive actually, but maybe I just got lucky. Good tip on the plexiglass - that definitely helps avoid pieces of plastic caught under the frame. Nice touch on the bathroom scene too - it's funny because it's true! Please continue producing video's - you may not have the largest viewership on youtube, but your videos are certainly right up there in terms of quality and interest-level (for me anyway!).

It does look quite amazing. As you say, the original iPhone changed Apple and propelled it into prosperity. The most important Apple devices would have the be the Apple 1, Apple II, Original Macintosh, iMac G3, iPod, iPhone, and iPad. Each of these devices played a huge role for Apple at their respective times. They have changed how we compute. I’d say that this is certainly worth the $399 price tag and may actually have some relative appreciation. I would have preferred glass and the flaws you mention are quite valid. I’m not a fan of them implying that they are based in California when they are based in China. China can produce high quality parts, the iPhone alone is evident of that, but it seems misleader to those who choose not to support Chinese firms. Overall a great and honest review. Thanks as always!

Nice video, JDW. I love the idea and am quite fond of organizational art in general whether it be schematics or breakouts like this. I would not pay that price though - as stated earlier, I'd buy an old mac or peripherals for that money. For those DIY inclined folks, I do think this would be a very cool project and pretty easy to assemble, especially since the attractive layouts have already been done for you & this type of deep display frame is readily available. Really neat item though. Thanks for the vid.

Thanks for sharing your kind thoughts. It really is too expensive at the current US$399 price point (even if it lacked the flaws I mentioned), but I do understand that the root problem is the sheer number of people wanting to buy it. Supply and Demand in full swing. So when buying anything from Grid Studio, one must evaluate the "value" inherent to the item whose guts are on display. I justified it for reasons stated my video; namely, that the iPhone 2G is as ground-breaking as the Apple I. But in terms of how the original iPhone literally changed the world, on some level it has even more value than the Apple I. The Apple I simply commands super high prices because only 175 were ever assembled. Rarity tends to drive price. But in terms of "money better spent," well, you're probably right about investing that sum of money in one's vintage Mac collection. 🙂

Hello @JDW. I ordered one of these from Grid. I ordered the NDS Lite for my son? How long did it take to receive your order? It’s been over a week and I’ve heard nothing in regard to ship times. I even sent a message via their website and no response.

Sorry to hear you are having issues. They are a legitimate company but their communication is horrible. I won the right to buy the Grid1 on 6/29/2022. I paid for it via PayPal on 6/30/2022, and I received the order confirmation by email same day. I emailed them about when it would ship on 7/1/2022 because I hadn't heard back from them. They claim I should get a response within 1 business day, but that wasn't the case. I then received a shipping status email on 7/4/2022, which included a tracking number. Looking at that tracking data, I see it shipped on 7/1/2022 and arrived at my address in Japan on 7/14/2022. So about 2 weeks in total, and I am in close proximity to China. So there may be some cause for concern if you've not received even a shipping status update. Honestly, I would keep emailing them about your order. I would suggest you also use Google Translate to convert your English to Chinese and email that to them too. Your order may have already shipped, but like I said, they have communications issues. I'm saddened to hear that nothing has improved. Please report back on what ultimately happens with them.

I bought one of these, but mine has a number sequence out of 999. Is this normal?
@JamesWages1
@JamesWages1 Жыл бұрын
I'm not really sure how to define "normal" with Grid Studio because I only purchased the one item from them. My guess is that they initially planned only a very limited run of the Grid-1 units, then found it to be profitable, so the decided to make it a permanent product for as long as they can source the parts. You should email them about it and see what they say. I'm quite curious how they will respond back to you! 🙂

Agreed. To be fair, I must mention that their more reasonable prices are in the $139 range for less popular iPhones. And that is really the key here. They are charging $399 only because demand outstrips supply. In fact, as stated in my video, you can't even buy the 2G model even if you want to because they mark it as being SOLD OUT and force you into contest participation to even win the chance the buy it! It just goes to show most people give a lot of value to the original iPhone, far beyond the models which came after!

@JDW-
@JDW- Жыл бұрын
It would be neat if you could, but unfortunately no. It is not a complete set of parts. As you can see, it’s missing the battery, for example. But I suspect that some of the parts would work if you did have a collection of most other parts. I’m not sure what the complete list of parts is, nor am I sure of all of the parts that are missing. But some key parts definitely are missing. It’s important to remember that this is a display piece, not intended to repair or build an original iPhone.

And that's the thing. If you don't already have a working iPhone 2G, how much would it cost to buy one? I am seeing some working yet really beat up 2G iPhones on EBAY for about US$80 (including shipping to a US destination), but do you really want a beat up one? No, I wouldn't. So then it becomes a matter of finding the best price for a 2G in great condition. I see one in mostly clean condition for US$250, including free shipping but only to a US destination. But even those lucky enough to be in the USA may find $250 rather high. Once you have the working phone, it then becomes a matter of whether the battery is good. If it is good, you could only use it on WIFI at home probably, or as an iPod, since most 2G networks have shutdown I think. Even so, $250 for a working and rather clean iPhone 2G still beats the $399 price tag of the GRID1. However, if you have a working 2G, you'd probably hide it either in a case or a drawer most of the time, whereas the GRID1 is always on display for you to gawk at. That may be worth $399 for some people.

Ah the old "USA Seller" trick.......
@JDW-
@JDW- Жыл бұрын
Although they are a real and legitimate company, the fact is they are based in mainland China, not California. Originally I thought they were a US company manufacturing in China. That was reinforced by the West Covina address at the bottom of the email I received. But if you look closely at all of the grammar and spelling errors on their website, you can tell they are not a US company. Also, if you look up that West Covina address in Google maps, it shows a residential home. Not the best impression, really.
@tenminutetokyo2643
@tenminutetokyo2643 Жыл бұрын
@@JDW- Obviously just an agent. Not surprising given the large number of people from China living in CA. You see this kind of thing on eBay all the time "US Seller" with a US flag - usually based out of Los Angeles, but the product always ships from China. Or is sent to the agent from China first.
@JDW-
@JDW- Жыл бұрын
@@tenminutetokyo2643 That's unfortunate. Even so, putting the full address in West Covina at the bottom of an email invites people to copy/paste in Google Maps. And when you discover it's a residential home, the reality becomes clear, and it leaves a bad impression overall in the mind of your would-be buyers. Clearly, Grid Studio doesn't care about that, most likely expecting most people to simply eye the West Covina, CA part and be reassured about the purchase without any further thought. I am not trying to bad mouth the company, but these are the facts. Fully honestly is always the best policy.
