@@RaineriHakkarainen i agree with what you have said about sokolov, but i still love brendel, horowitz, barenboim zimerman etc etc. also of the younger generation valentina lisitsa. plus many others, including some unknowns, sometimes young asian students, that i come across on youtube. there's a lot of great playing out there -- i wish i could play like these artists -- but sokolov stands apart; as stated above he makes MAGIC with his hands, heart and soul!

The force of a hurricane, the grace of a butterfly -- muscular and balletic playing. As though Bach came back to life, downed several energy drinks and played with the ferocity and dignity of someone who'd been itching to play for 250 years.

Paul Harvey Jr. wrote an episode of "The Rest of Story' many years ago depicting just that...It was about a person who was about to perform a very demanding job requiring thousands of intricate steps which must be done precisely or else he would face extreme ridicule (or something like that-I cant remember all the details as the prelude was presented). The story, typical of the Harvey program, kept the listener in suspense as to exactly what the subject's job was, the Rest of the story revealed at the end that it was a classical pianist, of course. Nothing else would have fit the scene. I have tried to write to the Harveys to find the transcript, but never received a response. Has anyone else heard or seen this production?

I fully agree with you: this interpretation of Bach's French Overture is magnificent and strong.
@adrianwright86854 жыл бұрын
No, Sokolov is a pianist, Bach was the genius who created 'works of genius'. Pianists - however good - don't do that! In another 300 years Bach will still be being played but Sokolov will have long been forgotten.
@ilpelideachillemanlio79654 жыл бұрын
@@adrianwright8685 And you, Adrian Wright, explain to me why Glenn Gould's interpretation of the Goldberg Variationen BWV988 are still a beacon for those who want to deal with this work by Bach; I remind you that Glenn Gould died back in 1982.
@adrianwright86854 жыл бұрын
@@ilpelideachillemanlio7965 If pianists all thought that Gould's recording were the ultimate versions then they wouldn't bother to make their own - so obviously that's not what they think! Bach died in 1750 - 270 years ago - and there's no sign of his music being forgotten - you really think Gould's recordings will last as long?! And not all pianists do think Gould's version that wonderful - some think it rather overtly 'quirky'.
@ilpelideachillemanlio79654 жыл бұрын
@@adrianwright8685 Quirky? This is a repeated cliché that is always heard about Glenn Gould. I don't want to dwell on this pianist here - at least for me not at all eccentric, but simply with his personal opinions on making music and, above all, on the recording of a record - I just tell you that his recordings have been sent, with the Voyager spacecraft, in infinite space, in case the spacecraft encounters some planet with other life forms. More than that, I don't know what to answer you. I modestly think that my Glenn Gould CDs will last up to my nephews and nephews of my nephews (with the repeated copies that can be made). So in over 500 years I assume that Gould's recordings will still be heard; and of course the music composed by Johann Sebastian Bach.

I like the term for Bach. Especially since when I was in Grad school - with a music major - Bach was kind of respected - but sort of as a fuddy-duddy. Doing what everyone else did - but much better. He was never given credit for being an original. And I think the idea of madness is ok in this instance - because what Bach conceived is born out of pure inspiration and fantasy. I know the work and knowledge that went into his music - but the manner in which he put it together is so amazing - it is the work of a madman. Or, if you, prefer, a genius. But "madness" makes him more human - more accessible. And I believe he wanted his music to be accessible to all. Pure beauty.

This is Bach as I haven't heard it yet. How come I didn't know of the existence of this self-effacing genius until last week , while show animals like Lang Lang and his grimacing clones litter the 'pages' of YT, craving attention? Sokolov's interpretations are breathtaking, reinventing each musical score. He doesn't play the music, he becomes music, as could be witnessed during yesterday's recital in Brussels. I place him high up there together with Horowitz, Richter, Rubinstein or Gilels: on a par with these piano greats, if not better. Long may he continue!

To my mind, the most distinctive keyboard interpreter Bach has had since Yudina, Tureck and Gould. Certainly one of the most audacious and most directly moving. The drive he gives this French Overture, the sheer sonority of it, the way he speeds up the return of the fugue... like a force of nature yet deliberate and absolutely logical. It grabs one immediately by the thoat and robs one of all speech, but also challenges expectations and convinces the intelligence at every turn.... How anyone can compare him to Pletnev or Barenboim, musical mannerists and technique-mongers boring as museum exhibits, is completely beyond me.

This is some of the most amazing piano playing I've ever seen. The control of the dynamics, the phrasing and bringout out all the voices are just beautiful. I've probably listened to this a couple of dozen times.

Amazing non-legato! By his expressiveness & sound he reminded me Udina, Gould.
