This is a test of the Grim Reaper Whitetail Special Pro Series 3 Blade broadhead.
I'm using a Bowtech SR6 at 72# & 27" draw length and Bishop FOC King Arrows, 460 grs and Bishop FAD Eliminator Arrows for the concrete test.
I have also picked up a new sponsor with my top recommendation for Broadhead Sharpening. staysharpguide... or @Innovative Outdoorsman The support I get for that has helped me improve my channel.
In case you're not familiar with my new test protocol, here is what I'm doing now:
1. Flight Test--1 field point & 2 broadheads out my by Bowtech SR6 at 40 yds, to see how well they group together.
2. Sharpness Test: I have a new test for edge sharpness and edge retention, using the Edge on Up Sharpness Tester. I test it out of the box and then again after Penetration Test 1, to see the edge retention.
What are some common scores for other edges? Here are some examples:
A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
A new high end cutlery edge takes approx 375 grams of pressure to break the wire.
A utility razor blade takes approx 200 grams to break the wire.
Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
Out of the Box Sharpness:
0-200 gr: 10
201-300 gr 9
301-400 gr: 8
401-500 gr: 7
501-600 gr: 6
601-700 gr: 5
701-800 gr: 4
801-900 gr: 3
901-1000 gr: 2
1001-1100 gr: 1
1101+ gr: 0
3. Edge Retention: Sharpness difference after Penetration Test 1:
10 minus 1 point for every 50 grams of sharpness difference. For example, if the initial sharpness was 400 gr of pressure and the sharpness after Penetration Test 1 was 450, the head would receive a 9 for Edge Retention Score.
4. Penetration Test 1: one shot into a combined medium of 2/3" of rubber mat, 1/2" MDF and Clear Ballistics FBI Grade Gel. This is to roughly simulate the tissue of an animal--hide, bone and muscle/fat.
5. Penetration Test 2: one shot into layers of cardboard.
6. Durability Test: For fixed blade heads, I take up to 5 shots into .22 ga steel plate and then evaluate the damage to the head. This is a good test to see the overall durability of the blades, as well as their connection to the ferrule. For mechanical heads, I take up to 5 shots into 1/2" MDF and then evaluate the damage to the head.
7. Concrete Test. This is a zero penetration test, which is a good test of the overall structural integrity of a head.
NOTE: Of course I understand we don't hunt steel plates and concrete, but all of these tests simply provide DATA POINTS for you to use in determining which broadhead is best for your hunting purposes. A well placed shot with pretty much any broadhead will get the job done most of the time. But why not prepare for the worst and buy the best you can?
If one head can hold up to multiple shots in steel & concrete-and another cannot--all other things equal, wouldn't you want to use the head that can withstand the steel and concrete? And after taking hundreds of animals with my bow, I've seen some bone shots cause more damage to a broadhead than even a cinder block.
The goal for all of us is to stack the odds in our favor as much as possible, and select a broadhead that is as lethal as possible for our bow/arrow set up and for the animal we are hunting.
At the end of each of my broadhead tests, you will find a score sheet listing all the results of the testing, so you can compare heads based on what factors matter to you the most. I also have an overall LUSK GRADE that is an evaluation of how the head performed in all the tests combined.
Here are my Personal Discount Codes for other Broadheads that I'd like to share with you:
SEVR: LUSKFIVE
Tooth of the Arrow: LUSK19
Afflictor: LUSK10
Any financial support I get from my sponsor or from the discount codes is invested into my channel.

I appreciate these tests being done in a respectful way. For this year, I am going to continue to shoot a grim reaper broadhead. It is not this model, but it is the only mechanical head I have ever shot. For deer and pigs, I have no complaints. I have been bow hunting for close to 40 years. I have shot several broadheads. This Grim Reaper is devastating . I would pass on a quaurtering to deer or pig.

HI JOHN, Thank you for testing these Grim Reaper broadheads. I watch your broadhead test videos frequently. Your tests are very informative. I used the 150 grain Grim Reaper Pro series for the first time out of my crossbow last season and like their slogan says, watched them drop. Very pleased with their performance and make a great crossbow broadhead in my experience. And like you discovered, you do get a wobbly one on occasion. Thanks again and God bless!

Another great test! I have used this head on turkeys (like you recommended at the conclusion) and it performed flawlessly with my specs (26.5"/60#). I won't used it for whitetail simply because of my specs and last year shot the GR Carni-Four instead. Also, a HUGE fan of the GR micro hades four blade like you have tested in the past. My new very recent flight testing testing has been with the the G5 M3. Out of the box VERY sharp, sharpness retention seems pretty decent so far with going into a target about 20 times. What makes this head really stand out is how EXTREMELY accurate it is AND how unbelievably quiet it is in flight. Crazy accurate of to 75 yards so far!! Just ordered a stay sharp 344 to makes these even sharper :-) You should test the M3.

Any rearward movement of the arrow will close the blades and lock them back in place. The fact that you recovered a dead animal it’s very difficult for me to believe it didn’t open. It probably hit the opposite side shoulder and bounced back and in doing so closed the blades up.

Have shot around a dozen deer with the 3 blade grim reapers and never lost one. About half were shot with the 1-3/8 cut and half with the 2 inch cut. Surprisingly all but one of the 2 inch cuts were pass throughs with the exception of a big doe I shot square in the shoulder. It absolutely shattered everything on the first shoulder and got halfway through the second which I found stuck when deboning. Im shooting a Triax with 29.5 draw at about 68 pounds.

I use the crossbow version of these and IDC that they are not reusable. I wouldn't reuse any head I kill a deer with. The head is like 10 bucks. So 10 bucks for a whole deer? Meanwhile the bloodtrails (which are not necessary bc u seem them fall) are crazy! Last doe I shot at 47 yards and it went 8 yards and dropped dead!
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing that. I do want to add that the idea behind durability is that only that they can be re-used, but it means they are cutting effectively at their full potential all the way thru the animal, thus making them more lethal. Does that make sense? I am glad to hear these have worked well for you.

Sorry to hear that. And thank you for sharing it. I will note, that the way these heads deploy, the blades can swing closed after passing thru a medium. It doesn't necessarily mean they didn't open. However, the hole in the medium does reveal that. I've shot Grim Reapers thru targets and had them stick out the back with all the blades closed...but then saw the 3 full slits in the back side of the target. I don't know what happened with your buck, and I'm sorry that happened. That must have been so frustrating. Thanks again for the comment.

But i'm missing a little something: By the cutting and penetration test, i would be very pleased if you would mention one or two numbers for comparision like: my all time best cut was ".... grams" and penetration was "... inches" and maybe a classic everyone ownes or knows like a Zwickey or Excalibur Boltcutter.

Thank you for the encouragement and the feedback. The reason I post the score sheets at the end of each video is so anyone can compare any head to any other head in all those areas. Because I'm testing 5-6 per month, I can't keep commenting on how they measure up to each other, cause there are new ones coming all the time. But the score sheets provide the opportunity for timeless comparisons. I am working on creating a website that will have all the score sheets on them. Presently, I have a KZfaq Vid that has a compiled score sheet of all the heads I tested in 2020. And on my Facebook Page, Lusk Archery Adventures, I have a score sheet of all the heads tested thru the first quarter of 2021.

10 years ago I killed my first deer ever (a doe) with a grim reaper three blade mechanical. It performed well. Since then I've used about 20 different heads... still haven't met my match made in heaven broadhead. I like expandable heads for accuracy and large ones for good blood trails. I like smaller fixed heads for penetration. I can't seem to get 3 blade heads like montec to fly like my field points. I get to test a lot on pigs. Someday maybe I'll the perfect one.

I bought these for whitetail season this year and they absolutely are incredible. 28 1/2 and 65lb full pass through cut through ribs on both sides. Deer made it about 50 yards only because it went over a steep ridge and was able to make it farther going down a very steep hill. Tracking was very easy it left a red carpet from the place where i shot the deer to where it came to a rest. It was leaving blood 3 feet up the sides of trees as it passed them. Both arrow and broadhead are in perfect condition wiped the blood off with some leafes and would honestly sling it at another deer. They are also just as accurate as a field point. Would definetly try these if you are sick of shooting a broadhead that doesnt leave a very good blood trail.

Tried them one year at 310 fps. Shot a doe at 15 yards and it didn’t pass through. Deer only made it 20 yards but no blood trail. Next deer was a nice 12 point buck. The blades opened in flight and veered off to the right.The buck was 15 yards. The blade skipped off the side of the deer and cut a slice all the way across the ribs, stopped behind the arm pit, and bounced off. It slit the lung and zippered a huge hole in the hide. The only blood was on the one blade that cut through all the ribs. It took 3.5 hours and over a 500 yard track job to find my buck. Never again .

@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 3 жыл бұрын
Yes it is...but with some qualifiers: 1. The blades don't reach their full cut until at least 1" into a medium. 2. The tips are so long, that they protrude about 1.5 or 2" past the cut of the blades. So with both of those combined, you are cutting much less tissue than rear deploying mechs and also more than shorter mechs that have their blades more forward. Does that make sense?

Its not that these heads take too much energy to deploy its that the forward deployment often just slams into the target and never opens. If the impact point hits too far out on the blade they will not deploy the force is transferred into the retention system. A problem amplified by the massive chisel point. Which is why you see these heads punch through targets, take extremely high deployment force/penetration force and often fail to open all the blades. I’ve recovered multiple animals shot with this style head… all have blade deployment failures all full pass through.

I am considering switching to these from slick trick(viper trick). The issue I’m having is blood trails. The vipertricks I’ve been on a 50/50 recovery rate on pigs and many of those I found the pig dead with not much blood. I’ve got an eye on a big hog and I want to get him back … what do you think. If not this what ?
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
Good question. Did you watch my vid on Broadheads & Bloodtrails? It will explain a lot about that exact issue. Vipertricks are great for flight and penetration, but don't have a very wide cut. While shot placement is the most important issue, selecting a head that gives you a wider cut while still penetrating deeply will help. The Exodus or Tooth of the Arrow XL are other great choices for fixed blade heads. If the pigs are under 200 lbs, then a good mech like a Sevr 1.5 or 2.0 will help as well.

Why do most manufacturers make the mechanical broad heads out of aluminum? Would it be better out of a heavier stronger steel to aide in penetration and increase kinetic energy to open blades and drive it through the animal. They would hold up better also.
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 3 жыл бұрын
Well, the weight of steel is so much greater. When broadheads are trying to stay within the popular, marketable weight limit of 100 or 125 grains and yet also trying to be super wide in their cut, something has to give. Heavier is better for penetration, but not for trajectory and not for marketability. Everything is a tradeoff.

I used them for a years. Then they changed the collars and this started happening. The collars bend and no longer hold the blades closed. I would miss the foam and go through the thin plastic front leg. Never happened until these came out. Mathews whitetail specials were better but broke off blades going a deer.

Thank you Richard. I certainly understand the value of a heavier arrow. I've used 860 gr arrows in Africa and tested arrows up to 1165 grains. But I also like to shoot at distance and like the margin of error that a lighter shaft provides. So the perfect balance for N American animals, for me, is in the mid 400s. Mine are 460 gr right now. Some of the heads I've wanted to test are: Slick Trick Assailant Hybrid, Slick Trick Raptor Trick and Slick Trick Magnum. Also: Ramcat Diamondback Hybrid, Ramcat Cage Ripper, Hunor Broadheads--any model, and Grizzly Stick Massai. I know that's too many, but those are some that come to mind. I prefer 125 gr, but can work with any weight. My address is 6159 Nottingham Dr, Johnston, Iowa, 50131 Thank you!

@LuskArcheryAdventures

They're both good heads--but very different in many ways. The GR is front or over the top deploying, so you will get a smaller entrance hole. The Sevr is rear deploying so you will get a larger entrance. I prefer a larger entrance hole, cause if I don't get a pass thru, I want at least one large hole. The Sevr is much much more durable as well. But for turkey, I sometimes prefer an over the top deploying head cause certain parts of a turkey are harder for a larger cut to penetrate.

Well, I've considered that, but that tip, even though it's not a big cut, can make a difference if it pokes thru hide and causes another hole for blood letting. The difference between one hole and two, even if it's small, can be significant. I figured I'd just settle on counting the tip for the penetration and letting the viewer see the problems with it--and I do comment on in extreme cases like this one.

@Lusk Archery Adventures : I like your vids, however, have one issues with the conclusions you draw from the "wound channel" shape when shooting fixed blades through steel. I debate that the shape you see in steel represents the shape we would see when shot through fur & tissue as the flexibility & elasticity is TOTALLY different. E.g. (that's a little bit off topic as this vid is about a mechanical) the "BIG" wound channel some fixed 3-blades or 4-blades produces is - IMO - just caused by the fact that the steel has not enough flexibility and / or elasticity to bend in another way, and as such the hole we see in a steel sheet does in no way show us the wound channel we would see in a game. And even the conclusion that those holes would indicate at least a trend is IMO far fetched. You wouldn't shoot the BH through a glass window and conclude that the hole would represent a wound channel in an animal, or? .....shooting a BH through steel gives an indication about the toughness, but IMHO can't give any indication about the resulting wound channel in a game.
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 3 жыл бұрын
Well, I understand what you're saying. Yes, tissue is going to be different. However, the steel does give you a clear image of the hole only created by the head itself; it's as though you're shooting it thru clay; it's a static snap shot of what happens as the head passes thru it.
@WM-jy9dz
@WM-jy9dz 3 жыл бұрын
@@LuskArcheryAdventures yes, but the steel is not elastic while tissue can be a) pushed out of the way (avoid cutting) and can bounce back once the projectile passed through, and b) might just be cut without further "bending" (like the steel bend) leaving a total different real wound channel. These holes some BHs facilitate in steel are sometimes really impressive, but personally I would never made my decision for a BH based on those holes in steel. But as an indicator wrt the toughness of the BH it gets my 👍.

@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 3 жыл бұрын
Well, first, thanks for watching. Of course we don't hunt cinder blocks. But there is a good value in doing a zero penetration test. It reveals the structural integrity of a broadhead. A hard impact on a joint of a large animal will can be even more damaging to a broadhead, especially when it impacts the heavy bone at an angle. The goal of my testing is to provide data points from consistent tests so broadheads can be compared. It's certainly not necessary for a head to be able to withstand an impact on concrete in order to kill an animal in most situations. However, if one head does hold up well to it and another does not...all other things equal...wouldn't you choose the one that can withstand such an impact? The same goes true with the .22 gauge steel plate for fixed blade heads or the 1/2" MDF for mechs, in my testing. It's certainly not necessary for a head to be able withstand 5 shots thru such a medium in order to kill an animal in most situations. However, if one head does hold up well and another does not...all other things equal...wouldn't you choose the one that can withstand such an impact? I just provide data points on flight, penetration in 2 different mediums, sharpness, edge retention and durability in 2 different mediums. Then you can decide which of those data points matter to you...and you don't have to blindly trust what is written on the package or on the TV commercial, or what worked once or twice for a buddy on his hunt. You have solid data to choose the best broadhead for your hunting needs. If you think that kind of info is a joke, then this channel is not for you. I wish you well in your hunting. But if you're serious about making the most ethical kills as possible, then why not take the time to study the research and select a head that is objectively and consistently tested in a myriad of ways? These tests will help you make the best choice--at no cost to you; just a few minutes of viewing.
