Today it's time to talk about something that annoys me quite frequently....... Grimdark doesn't just mean dirty!
Join me for a little chat about painting "Grimdark" without covering your models in streaking grime and a couple of examples of doing this to a tabletop and a display quality!

Beautiful work. And you are totally right... the mud, filth and streaking muck is a cheap and unskilled way to achieve the grimdark vibe. But hey... I'm guilty of painter-adhd and just want/need to get them on the table.... You get the model you deserve!

This clears some things up for me thanks, I'm new to painting. So far it looks to me like covering something in agrax earthshade wash makes it looked dragged through the mud, but I dont see what's wrong with using the wash intentionally and methodically, ie painting it into the lower layers or cracks of something to add contrast or "painting" multiple layers of it to make a smooth gradient. I sometimes see there's a "that's for noobs" attitude among painters about using it at all but I dont quite get it yet.
@SprayBlackStudios
@SprayBlackStudios 2 жыл бұрын
To be honest the wash is much better used intentionally and methodically as that way you get considerably more control over it. A lot of people assume that washes are just meant to throw over the miniature and think that the technique is just for noobs but it really isn't.

The best I can sum up grim dark is abandon all hope. Its to make you feel like there's nothing you can do to stop whats coming. Or to simply put shit load of contrast colors void of brightness to make you feel hopeless.

Grimdark doesn't mean smothering everything in Streaking Grime and rust and you've pulled it off masterfully. Nicely done. It's called grimdark, not grime-dark after all.

could you make a tutorial how you achieved the green horns and the osl?
@SprayBlackStudios
@SprayBlackStudios 2 жыл бұрын
To be honest it would be a pretty short video! Both were achieved using the Vallejo Premium color Fluo Green and then some white added to provide highlights. The OSL was done with an airbrush and the horns by just layering up some very thin layers.

So what I'm getting from this is "dissonance." Would ya say that it'd be possible to make something in the grimdark style but keep some bright colors if it seems out of place? (Ie, an Emperor's Children legionarre in full purple almost immaculate yet they stand over a pile of corpses, clearly civilians, their flayed skin in his non-sword hand)

Rich, I agree it isn't ideal to use the streaking grime, I myself use oils for washes and different bits and bobs, however, I think it makes it a lot easier for players who want the grim dark look, however do not have your skill to pull it off like you do? I've been painting for donkeys I don't have your level of skill! I think that as well, it depends on miniatures, as for instance your DE don't need to look dirty or like they have been through the wars (literally) however on an imperial guard soldier, a non poster joy (looking at you smurfs) the aesthetic of warriors that have only known battle for the entirety of their life this technique works amazing!
@SprayBlackStudios
@SprayBlackStudios 2 жыл бұрын
Oh don't get me wrong, I absolutely love my Streaking Grime! It is an easier bar to enter into the style of the hobby but it can also easily become a crutch because it is relatively easy to use. I want to show that you don't need these products and crutches to be able to do awesome work. Saying that, my next tutorial will be using the grime!

@@shankley_has_a_brush You can use them with a brush though to be honest the finish isn't as good as you do tend to get quite a lot of brushstrokes. It's fairly tough to get a nice smooth and flat finish without the airbrush.

That was a great video, Rich. Up until you had that strange little lip twitch with clicking sound at the end 😆 The fella you mentioned on Instagram is incredibly talented. There is some great inspiration on his profile. Thank you for sharing. I totally agree that grimdark aesthetics are not contained in making something look filthy. The lighting to set the tone and mood is essential, with the environmental effects on the miniature present. If it makes sense to add dirt, dust, and muddy boots to an individual then do that. In the case of the Dark Eldar (also an old skool gamer), they are far less likely to be trudging through a battlefield on foot. They are also an alien race with elegance on their side. Showing them off in highly contrasting light with perhaps some scuffs and engine oil from hovercraft is more fitting. Great work dude. See you in the Discord.
@SprayBlackStudios
@SprayBlackStudios 2 жыл бұрын
Haha sorry, did that weird you out a bit? 😂 Yeah Eric's is so damn talented, I've admired his work for a fair while but some of his recent stuff is just ridiculous! It does lead to interesting questions when looking at things like the Dark Eldar as you mention they are much more likely to be sat in their vehicles than trudging through the dirt. Maybe a bit of blood splatter is thematic though!
