You know I remember this time my sister was telling me about her perfect overpowered Harry Potter roleplay OC. When I questioned the complete lack of character flaws she explained that she gave her character the flaw of randomly violently murdering people for literally no reason. Because that's a character flaw that is a sign of brilliant and ingenious writing.

He awakens needing to pee, but do to a power out he struggles to find the bathroom. He tries to describe what he thinks is in front of him, and uses this to navigate. His eyes slowly start to adjust to the darkness but only in time for him to have already found the bathroom, where his journey comes to an end. With a subtle (or not so subtle) theme of the unknowns of life and the struggles of our mere existence. The darkness of the room being The unknown. His eyes adjusting being growing old and maturing to the world. And obviously, his journey to find the bathroom being the trek through life. Meaning the bathroom (and peeing) is death.

That is so true! As a history buff, nearly all period piece movies come off as unrealistic to me because everything is grey and brown and all the peasants have dirt smeared on their faces. Note to filmmakers: Old photographs are black and white or sepia because the limitations of technology back then, not because the world was literally all grey and brown! And even the darkest parts of human history had silly parts in them too, just look up "Mad Jack" Churchill, an officer fighting in ww2, probably the worst war humanity has ever seen, carrying a broadsword and a bagpipe. Reality is weird.

A Grimdark setting can be funny to a reader while still being absolutely horrid in-universe. 40k would be a living nightmare to actually live in, but to us readers who know it's a work of fiction, "Hyper-oppressive Theocratic Neo-Rome that worships a sentient corpse on a throne killing equally hyper-oppressive or just straight up omnicidal aliens and eldritch demons" is just plain stupid (in a good way).

Edit: Since there seem to be a lot of people who misinterpret this statement, let me clarify. I was arguing here with a fellow commenter who was apologetic towards national socialism and its crimes, who may or may not have been joking and whose comment was deleted. I have absolutely no beef with @Aaron Landry and his statement about artistic choices concerning grim-dark empires and the Nazis being a bit over-done in works of fiction. I actually agree. I was merely discussing with someone who thought that the Nazis weren't that bad. This legit gave me the idea for a story involving something that twists traditional narrative on it's head by having someone with all the traits of a stereotypical hero actually being an egotistical sociopath, while the character who seems like the villain is actually a good guy that wants to help people. The story at the beginning gives subtle hints in the background to the true nature of the characters before it's then revealed in a surprising gut-punching way.

I think that when all characters are actually well-meaning and moral, (even the villains) the "Grimdark" setting can make the plot events have more impact, so instead of the typical story that goes: "Yeah, everything sucks forever, and we're all gonna die, so this is a terrible person you should care about because... Nevermind, he's dead..." you make a story where characters aren't stupid, evil, and try to change their circumstances... Only to fail at that and fucking die tragically or something... Like the best written books in the 40K Horus Heresy series... I also think characterization is the only important thing to avoid the darkness-induced audience apathy, because everything is horrible, but at least you find this person interesting and want to know what happens to them...

I like how there’s a bunch of people saying “so warhammer in a nutshell” despite not knowing how those stories actually play out Warhammer 40k plays out like a classic tragedy. Where characters have Nobel intentions but also one or two glaring character flaws, I’ll use the big E as an example The emperor sought to make humanity the dominant race, and after Millenia of observing humanity he had a few ideas on how to do it. He thought that to properly unite humanity he needed to be uncompromising, logical and not swayed by emotion, however these ideals festered and grew darker, as he took more and more atrocious actions for his cause, by the time of the great crusade he was all but human, and it was this that lead to his downfall. As his primarch sons viewed him as they’re father but he viewed them as mere tools and disregarded their emotions, it was ultimately this that lead to the rebellion known as the Horus heresy, and in his finally moments in the battle with Horus, his favourite son he is shown to have had some dormant humanity left in him, and he could not bring himself to kill his favourite son. The man who had ordered mass genocides had realised the error of his ways as he was finally forced to take the life what to him was a person, not some nameless, faceless crowd. Another thing that can be noted is that he thought religion divided humanity and conflicted with his ideals of rationalism, however centuries of harbouring this view lead him to be zealous in his anti religiousness, to the point of making irrational claims of there being no gods or supernatural powers despite the opposite being very much true and persecuting those who do not strictly adhere to the practices of your belief, and in the end his fanatical denial of religion lead people to believe “The emperor preached rationalism and free thinking, he also claimed fervently that he was not a god, yet he stood as a giant, with chiseled features, ornate golden armour and an aura of golden light, clearly this was a test, and he actually is a god” and this mindset bred the imperial cult with degenerated into a fanatical cult with no regard for free thinking. But instead of realising this people just brush it off and say that 40k is grimdark for the sake of grimdark

You know, I find it ironic that grimdark writers forget dark humor exists. For example: "Welp, half our village is dead... On the plus side the food shortage is now no longer an issue." Thing is, grimdark can be done well. 40K would be terrible to live in, but it's kind of awesome to look at from the outside, when you have cathedral-spaceships shooting each other with torpedoes the size of skyscrapers, aliens that swarm of their vast living monster-ships to eat you, then eat your planet down to the bedrock, disciples of the god of excess who wail on their guitars so hard your head explodes, or the guy who tried to purge all religious thought from humankind being enshrined as a god-emperor. Dark Sun offers a thread of potential redemption for the setting that player characters could grasp (if they survive long enough), and also has the potential that they'll become powerful enough to overthrow the sorcerer-kings. Berserk actually develops the protagonist beyond "murder machine out for vengeance", and gives him an arc where he comes to trust and cares for other again despite the fear that they'll be torn away from him, and also has likeable and sympathetic characters who survive and thrive. Bad grimdark is when there's no attempt to have grandeur, hope or nuance, where it's just an endless calvacade of awful and hope and happiness only exist to be crushed for shock value. Grimdark generally fails when the audience simply stops caring who wins, or what happens to the setting. Unlike real awfulness, we can opt out of fictional awfulness by closing the book or stopping the film.

I like The Dark Knight but that movie is singlehandedly responsible for the current "grimdark is realism" trend. The irony is that The Dark Knight is an optimistic story at it's core. It explicitly stated this theme when the boats refuse to kill each other.
@johnathonhaney8291
@johnathonhaney8291 5 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't put it all on The Dark Knight, though it's certainly a contributing factor. I've lost count how many people, who must really, really hate their lives, equate "horrible" with "real". Mind you, there are folks who survive horrible experiences that stay with them the rest of their lives (Jack Kirby and his lifelong nightmares of WWII come to mind as a mild example). But the loudest advocates of this are often the ones who have never been near such.
@isaac1670
@isaac1670 5 жыл бұрын
I would agree. The people who do live these types of lives are very rarely out and open about it because closing yourself off is a common defense mechanism. As far as modern storytelling goes though most "realistic" stories are told by people who live very mundane lives and have absolutely no point of reference on how to confront genuine repeated trauma. Whenever people point out how popular stories contain dark moments they tend to focus solely on the dark moment itself (Batman losing his love interest) and totally ignore how that darkness is dealt with in the story to give a sense of levity (Batman being motivated to disprove Jokers' ideology and succeeding).
@johnathonhaney8291
@johnathonhaney8291 5 жыл бұрын
@@isaac1670 Yeah, that's the thing. While the darkness can and often does crush people, it doesn't have to. And there are enough real world examples of people who do something with what horrible things happened to them to make the world a better place (a point, you might be interested to know, that was made in the documentary "Batman Unmasked", released around the time of The Dark Knight and I'd recommend looking up on KZfaq to get a unique perspective on the Batman mythos). It's just a combo of no direct knowledge mixing with psychological immaturity to me when the loudmouths I mentioned before lean too hard on the darkness. I think you can agree that one direct result of Dark Knight was the dark overtones of DCEU on characters where it did not fit.

The Ciaphas Cain books are actually good because they take the WH40k universe seriously. As in, we see a more realistic portrayal of the Imperial Guard and the Imperium's many planets. We see the IG actually being competent, with officers and leaders who actually care for their lives and the lives of civilians instead of cartoonishly incompetent generals sending wave after wave of them into the crossfire just because they have reserves. We see characters with actual lives, emotions and loyalties instead of just a bunch of grizzled uber-machos or crazed zealots brooding and thinking about warfare 24/7. We actually see the nekrons, the tyranids, the forces of chaos and even the orks as credible, but not insurmountable threats. We have actual spots of levity and hope, but just enough to serve as a juxtaposition of how dark the rest of the universe is, elevating it and making it feel more real. Before I read the CC novels, I was totally burned out on the WH40k universe because of a combination of darkness induced audience apathy and the cartoonishness of the setting, yet they single-handedly turned my impression around. I heartily recommend them to everyone interested in the WH40k universe but daunted by all the grimdark crap it produces.
@Horvath_Gabor
@Horvath_Gabor 5 жыл бұрын
The problem with WH40k is just the sheer number of, often contradictory, books. For every good novel, there are three grimdark gorefests where everyone dies in the end and nothing is accomplished, because they have to keep up the status quo until the next edition comes up.
@Horvath_Gabor
@Horvath_Gabor 5 жыл бұрын
-Just because you don't read certain books because of the reviews, it doesn't make then any less canonical or reflecting the broader WH40k universe than the ones you read. -No one is talking about universal change here. The Ciaphas Cain books are perfect examples in this regard. They actually save the planets. They actually save the civilians. They actually reach compromises and deal with the threats. They change the status quo for the better. But for every CC book, there are five where the plot boils down to "Group of characters embark on mission/land on planet -> fight-fight-fight-fight-fight -> everyone dies, and in the best case scenario they accomplish their goal in the process, which preserves the crappy status quo, or in the worst case (and more common) scenario, everything goes to shit anyways."

You mean "Rick Grimes's Personal Hell: The Series"? My fan-canon for that shitshow is that Rick died in Episode 1 (eaten by Zombies while he was asleep, natch) and everything after that is just his own torment. That's how the world conveniently reshapes around him to screw him over constantly, even to the point of villains just appearing from the aether to inconvenience his life further. That's why Villains get infinite supplies of completely loyal goons despite having obvious flaws, while Rick's happy little gang never gets beyond "one soap opera" in size. That's how zombies are only ever a problem for Rick and co at times that'd be inconvenient for him, while nobody else seems to struggle with them a bit!

+Stuart Conrod Yep, I mean, the show goes out of its way to portray the fact that its zombies keep decaying until they are not even able to walk anymore, losing limbs left and right, just to showcase its make up artistry, but then HOW is it so that there is always hundreds of barely decayed zombies at hand near the Rick's-soap-opera gang? I mean, some zombies wear clean-ish clothes. Clean-ish clothes in zombies, years into the zombie apocalypse. Come on, it was unrealistic enough that the protagonists have constant access to that. lol

I find that good grimdark stories (yes, they exist) usually have some sort of implied explanation for why everything is so bleak rather than have it be bleak simply for the sake of being bleak; furthermore, when characters are killed off in those stories, it's usually for a reason rather than just for shock value (though the shock value is still present).

Remember guys: There's no despair without hope. If you're story is incredibly dark from start to finish, the audience will stop caring. But throw in lighthearted moments, make characters temporarily happy, give them hope... Then, when something really bad happens, it'll _hurt._ Yeah, I know, you still shouldn't write a story just to make it dark. But plenty of stories benefit from that kind of tone, so you might as well tear your audience's heart out while you're at it. xD
