One of the many things I love about the stories of Odin is the constant reminder that power and skill and knowledge all require a sacrifice and we only get a brief moment to enjoy those things. It's a reminder to be deliberate about your pursuits and to be careful only to reach for the things you are willing to pay for in full. You only have two eyes, after all

Odin was one of the presiding gods over one the biggest festivals of the year. One source calls him the Father of Júl/Yule. He is also clearly a hospitality god as well. A god that as a traveler expected good treatment for all who are welcomed into your home. He is also a god of oaths kept, and agreements upheld. This is a grim responsibilty, but a positive one. He also helped create humanity, and Midgard. He is complex, amoral in some ways, but definitely favored. A day of the week is named for him, that is a high honor.

Major motivating factor: ODIN: gain power over others by any means necessary THOR: protect family and home passionately LOKI: alleviate boredom and avoid stagnation Modern conclusions: ODIN: great guy, totally cares about people THOR: warrior, not a family man LOKI: totally evil and malevolent I think christianity totally warped our POV. Its interesting how you are able to explain the characters of the Norse gods to us. I have my own unverified gnosis of Odin, which was very positive but I realise you are talking the facts of the mythology. I respect your knowledge. Your explanation of tricksters makes sense. It is a necessity to shake up the foundations to see if there is anything that can be made better. I see the individuality of Odin, in fact, he invited me to sit on a throne (in a dream), which I interpret as self sovereignty, he is a Sovereign's god after all.

Odin gave me Gugnir and the oath, now mad and misfortune. Hard lessons when somebody got more knowledge than you are.

'Grimnir' has always been one of Odin's most interesting and compelling names to me, so much so I made a character with the same name for a project I was working on. That story didn't pan out, but the character is still with me and I'm sure he'll manifest in one way or another in something I make, even as just a legend. Fantastic video Arith! I found it to be very reflective of some of my own experiences with Odin, especially as someone who was led to Norse spiritual practice by Loki and so broadly looks at things with a more Lokean perspective. I would say mine with Odin have been primarily positive, though the severity and intensity of his knowledge and ambition is ever-present. So I try not to ask too much of him. Interestingly, I've also had some tension between him and The Morrigan in my personal experiences (I honor the Irish gods that have reached to me as well), as she is very tied to fate and outcomes, and interestingly battle as well. Anyway, without getting *too* esoteric and personal, the practical explanation of the effect of The Morrigan upon me is that she helps me stay accountable to myself and reminded of the severity of going against the way of things upon my own path and in tandem with who I am. (I once saw a crow very angrily chase a raven, which are in range but uncommon here, out of my yard relatively close to me) I think there's a lot to learn from Odin, both in is fortunes and misfortunes, and I do still feel Loki and Odin as two sides of the same coin at times. Loki employs his divergent existence to disrupt power, and Odin's divergence serves his willingness to do whatever is needed to gain and grow power. I see the greatest necessities in Loki, as it relates to my practice, but Odin has still helped me work towards self empowerment nonetheless. So we shall see where things take me! My power continues to be in subversion and reappropriation of power, learned mainly through Loki (alongside some indigenous medicines as well) and I feel safe in that. A path in proximity to Odin in my eyes is one that should always be considered as clearly and consciously as possible.

I also think it is worth mentioning that a lot of the dubious, and cruel acts he does directly benefit the gods, and humanity. The mead of poetry is where our art comes from. The wars he causes and the lives lost help empower him for Ragnarok. He is constantly trying to keep the gods and humanity safe by using his knowledge of the future, and the agreements he holds the great powers to.

There's always a price to pay at the end of the day. Look at how much Odin suffered to gain knowledge of the runes or even how much he suffered to gain some of his other powers. I believe he isn't evil, but instead will make you understand that you must be prepared to endure any kind of sufferings or hardships if you truly want to reach a difficult goal. If you want to collect honey be prepared for the bee stings that come with it.

I would also like to express my opinion. I believe that, for too long, humans have limited the gods by placing their own perceptions and mistakes; their frustrations and inclinations. Just like what people have done to the Christian God. They don't need to prove anything to humanity, for they are what they are, like a force of nature

Wonderful insights! I do tend to disagree w/ your assessment of Loki, who causes harm for harm’s sake. Odin is equally amoral, but for different reasons; mostly, what he perceives as his own benefit. I think your comparison between Odin and the ruling class is spot-on, and is meant as a metaphor for how most people should interact/view ruling classes, and their roles in the ancient culture.

Literally I have Othala tattooed and dedicated my life to Odin and death in battle because life wasn't a very optimistic time for me in my younger years... I gained skill akin to Galdr read and wondered at the Havamal and learned the elder futhark both esoteric and as a writing system but this misery is true and as Grimnr he at least was able to come away with the blood of Kvasir or the Soma of the gods what happened to me I lost everything and everyone and turning to my left I became devout to Freyja in all her aspects and to Seither and sewing of seeds and wandering in observance and wonder the beauty of the forests and my animal in native american shamanism is the hawk or falcon interestingly as Freyja's cloak Brisingamn is of hawk feathers and I look on now to Folkvangr as it feels what is right in my life... I do feel a sense of accomplishment at having been blessed to be a living shield maiden imbued with aspects of both Vanir and Aesir... thanks for your beautiful tales and truths about norse religion! I have always wondered about the modern fascination with Odin because I have always understood him to be a deceitful, manipulating god. So many people I know latched onto the superficial pop culture notions of Odin because it appears metal and cool. They have no idea the depths and truths of the god they proclaim to follow. The Allfather is so wise, he did lots of self gain! But not all of it was selfless, he understood the end was inevitable, he's having his fun while there's time. The more i read it shows doubt on the return of Baldr like maybe it's is Christiansted by Snorri's Edda. Hopefully we will learn through different works and arcology like Neil prices works, and Johanna Katrin Fridriksdottir, johan egerkrans shorts have given me a good look at different folklore, Carolyne Larrington has a different and cool view, and Crawford is adapted since his poetic edda, I'd insist on checking out these different works, though arcology alone price has taken us into shamanism and the sami, which our the ancestors of native Americans.

One of the reasons I have never been drawn to work with Odin has been for a couple of reasons: I feel that he is often misunderstood with bare minimum of surface level knowledge about him. He seems to be one of the most highly glossed gods where he is made to be this Abrahamic or Hellenist Sky Daddy where people flock to him based on the clearly biased ways he has been portrayed by Snorri. The other reason is that I have never gotten a good vibe from him. I've never felt that his relationship is given freely. The gifting cycle just seemed....transactional. I dunno, but he's not interested in me, and I have never felt a level of trust with him. The other gods seem more receptive. Thor feels protective and tenacious. I ask nothing of him but thank him for his protection that he seems to naturally give. With Freyja I ask her only to make me more receptive to spaces between, but I ask nothing directly in anyway short of hoping to know her better. Odin seems like a god one goes to for something. That's not where I am at with my relationship. Quick VAR UMN note! Whatever you are doing with the drums on those tracks is incredibly tactile when enjoyed through bone conductive headphones! One of the songs came up on my "weekly new release" or whatever list on Spotify and the gym and I immediately knew it was one of yours without even looking at my phone. It was almost like a zap to my inner ears every time you hit that drum. It wasn't what I was expecting while doing squats, but I think it would be a really immersive way for those wanting to FEEL the music when they meditate. I highly recommend listening to it in such a way if you have headphones like that. Awesome.

Anything is justified when the objective is to prevent the destruction of all things and once again allow the cycle to restart. You have made me question whether that aspect of ragnarok was an invention by the powerful to justify their decisions tho. Either way, it would seem disrespectful to assume the gods don't change over the centuries like any sentient thing does. We now live in a time where deception is solely used for profit as opposed to being a survival skill to stop marauders from ending your everything.

"Odins path of misfortune"? Shouldn´t that be "peoples misfortune" because of the aristocracy misused Odin´s power and wisdom for egoistic gains? Following Odins wisdom isn´t deception and should really provide fortune for everybody and everything in the creation.

These ideas work well today, and were okay. But, in that era these were Gods, and none of the Gods were in any way of perfected character. Unlike the docile the Gods fought evil, and offered all hope, since all were too domesticated to stray, and too childlike and loving to not be slaves. So, these two GODS offer a hammer and nail, where the "good ones" tricked everyone into sleep states. The GODS then have no choice but, to go in and do their own triks, and both do tricks, and act as gods, pushing it all into non subjection to remove slavery. There is no other way to end subjection, but through bigger war, and the GODS did that, so change that idea, it is modern.

Sorry, you are wrong about some things: Odin and Loki two sides of same deity. Odin is Wisdom of Consciousness. Loki represents ignorance. They are Wisdom and Ignorance ... Osiris and Set ... Two sides of every personality including that of the Universe. Odin is Supreme Consciousness. He has a dark side known as the Trickster. That's Loki. Odin is the Creator aspect of Frey. Frey is the Lord. He has 3 aspects: Creator Sustainer and Destroyer .. Odin Thor and Loki. They are One Deity named Frey. They are Brahma Vishnu and Rudra in Hinduism, and Frey is called Shiva. They all represent Consciousness. The female deities represent Matter. Matter is Mother. Consciousness is Father. They are Lord and Lady, the Sun and Earth. Together they are the Mother Goddess ... Nerthus. All these names were different in the difference tribes, so a lot of confusion. There were two sets of 3 deities representing Consciousness and Matter, Creation Sustainment and Destruction. And the Whole was/is Great Mother, All of Nature. She is called Maha Devi or the Brahman in Hinduism. In the North She was Nerthus etc. My ancestors in Mecklenburg called Her Frau Goda. Odin is the Creator aspect of Supreme Consciousness. As such he is the Father not only of humans, but the entire Universe.

Knowledge/ power has no morals it is not good or bad in its essence. Perhaps the interactions between humans and Odin are cautionary tales about the ever present hybris of the humankind that leads us to a downfall of selfishness and vanity of our own makings.
