My advice to ED on the crater problem is to add a crater pruning algorithm to DCS. Craters that overlap are prime candidates for removal. Lone craters should be left alone if possible. This would be better than turning off craters after a certain number. Instead, I would keep the number low enough using pruning.

" You would not want that coming towards your house"...i live in the flight path of A-10s as they accumulate flight hours flying between two different bases. I actually love it when i see them flying, i run outside into my back yard every time i hear their engines. Every once in a while, we get ospreys or cobra helicopters flying overhead.

Hi all. Don't forget the 3 or 4 ex- US Army, Chaffee light recon tanks. They knew they couldn't drive them in so they had them stripped down to the last manageable bit (hull, turret and gun mantle all separated as well) & flown in and put back together at the other end.

Cap I have to make one correction, after the French lost it was only 5 years before the Americans were involved in Vietnam. We were involved long before 64 and the Gulf of Tonkin. Keep up the good work, it's fun watching the scenarios you do.

And one other historical comment - Dien Bien Phu wasn’t a last stand - it was meant as a trap the French thought they were setting! - the French thought if they set up a base in the middle of hostile territory, well fortified and provided with firepower and airpower they would be able to draw the Vietnamese into a decisive fight where the French could inflict serious damage on them. The French artillery commander was so confident that when offered more resources in the lead up to the battle he commented that he already had more than enough guns. After about the first three days of serious fighting he realised his mistake and blew himself up with a grenade…

Thank you for adding the JTAC to a comparable Vietnam era battle Cap! It really drives home the amazing step-up in CAS effectiveness and the impact it has on any enemy combatants who mistakenly bunch up too much during a modern conflict. We may have replaced the smoke rockets for highly trained JTAC special forces using optimized comms with GPS and grid coordinates, but the rockets served as a great analogue while also being period correct. The effectiveness of the A-10, even with the limited load out options is amazingly impressive. Imagine modern Air Force TACPs embedded with Tier 1 Special Forces directing highly trained USAF A-10 pilots with mission-specific loadouts and the required number of air assets per the mission. Then imagine if that stray drip from a certain damp sock didn’t leak out. 😊 I am one quite entertained valued viewer and once again your connection with your valued viewer community is quite unique and special compared to other YT channels. Thank you once again for the hours of entertainment since I found the GR!

Recommendation: Try running an ultra modern air superiority campaign with each side having a dozen or so legacy aircraft (F-15, F-16, MiG-29, SU-27/30/33/37) and a handful of modern stealth fighters (F-22 vs J-20 or Su-57). Players that were shot down while flying a stealth aircraft could respawn in any allowable legacy craft, players who were shot down in a legacy craft could respawn in any warbird of their choice. What tactics would serve best to keep the legacy craft relevant ? How easy would it be target and take out the enemy's stealth aircraft ? How screwed would an air force be once all its stealth aircraft were gone ? To make it even more intense keep the opposing airfields relatively close to each other (say 15-20 minutes flight time max) but limit each side to a maximum of just 20-25% internal fuel with no limit on externals. Do you REALLY want to screw your RCS by adding bags ? Can you afford NOT to ? Would taking out enemy stealth aircraft on the ground/returning from patrol be a valid tactic ? I'd love to see this played out.

Great video, I still haven’t actually bought this game yet BUT I’m more & more tempted by each new video I watch. Not sure how much it’s worth mentioning but I’m an ex British Army JTAC as we we’re called. We had to call in 9 liners which is the 9 lines of info required by the jets or artillery (naval & ground based) that includes the grid ref, bearing & range, type of targets (ToT) Etc. Keep up the great work & I may buy this game myself. Cheers 🍻

1:55 As a German, I checked the cited source and it holds no evidence to back this claim. As a matter of fact, the cited source is about Western German politics towards Indochina and France's involvement, especially about recruiting thousands to tens of thousands Germans for the French Foreign Legion to fight in Indochina. There are no mentions of East German advisors.

Also great teamwork with FAC from huey's ^^ Its faster from a FAC from the air then from the ground, many factors that TACP have to consider before the first bombs or other weapons are deployed... Hope more CAS vids come up^^ A-10 or SU-25 ;) CAS on Khe Sahn? (Airfield defence) CAS in Korengal Valley? (Hill to Hill combat) CAS in Bosnia - Herzegovina? There's one problem : during the real battle of Dien Bien Phu, there was fog because it was the monsoon season. That's why the french air force didn't intervene efficiently. You should redo the same but with low visibility

I had about 20 French-military jokes all typed out, but that might get Cap demonitized for hating on the French even though it's all in good fun, and nobody takes it seriously. The French make fun of the English and the Americans, and the English and Americans make fun of the French. Gods help you if you actually attack any of them because they've been friends for so long that the other two will happily come kick your ass.

Problem with those two scenarios is that according to what I've, they were both trench warfare, in game we dont have any suitable analogues for trench warfare yet.

Fantastic display of CAS effect. Only one thing that might increase the efficiency and maybe a bit more realism: Rotation and command. My take would be thus: 33% of aircraft on-site and fighting, 33% reloading on base and 33% en route either from or to the site. The last 1% would be my OSC coordinating the strikes in order to maximize weapon effectiveness. The AFAC could also implement a rotation with a 33,3% split thus ensuring effectiveness. Maybe even with their own OSC. An overall commander, to do the scheduling for all the components, is an important role to have with that rotation. He would need such things as regular ammo status reports by the OSCs. So the roleplay could be used for even more effectiveness. With such a short travel time as in this scenario, it would probably also work to do a split of 50/50. But with the results speaking for themselves it is not really necessary. besides Cap filled a bit of the OSC role anyway. If the server could take it it might be interesting to do the same with Vietnamese AAA present?

DBP base was in a valley/basin surrounded by hills upon which the NV situated their artillery which pounded the strip and supply aircraft. Shouldn't the A10 strike force go for them rather than infantry? Leave the NV infantry for the defending infantry? Armchair general speaking...

If I remember, the French did not suspect guns as therefore were no roads to those locations, just jungle. The French were not even looking for guns until the shelling started. The NV had to first build roads to the location and then pull them up with ropes.

I'm sure the kill count would even be higher with less ordinance, if you had a organized attack pattern where everyone had an attack order. Instead of all diving and bombing the first smoke Ie Cap gets first run while #2 in the order starts after cap call bombs away then #2 can watch where Cap's bomb fall and tweak his approach to not drop his in the same crater. Plus will give time for the FAc Helos to clear the area.

I think I would have used Napalm on some of the runs as one bomb released from a low-flying plane can damage an area of 2,500 square yards (2,100 m2). The added benefit would be no craters and the fire will work as a barrier preventing enemy troops from advancing on a position.

It's a shame that the RN and RAF didn't have the benefit of zero wind and perfect conditions for their attempts. Several bombs did hit the ship but did not penetrate the deck. Incidentally it only took one Tallboy to put Tirpitz out of action, the Germans were unsporting enough not to acknowledge the fact. How about one Vulcan with one bomb?

Great Video.... however, having studied a lot of FAC techniques from the Vietnam War, I'd suggest a couple of things: 1) if the P-47 can carry smokes, I'd use it; also have TWO FAC's in the mission(maybe give them respawns) so you have only a few set of rockets to deal with. Also, the FACs call in when the fighters can roll in and from which direction and pull-off.

Very interesting scenario. It's a shame the server couldn't handle the craters the GAU-8s would have made. That would have been fun to watch. I think the outcome would have been much different, if the bad guys had the AA weapons they did in real life. Excellent work as always.

Isabelle was the LAST to fall. The FFL destroyed their equipment and broke out south to meet up with Condor (Relief Unit). I missed the AA that should have been all over you guys. The VM had quite alot.

The Viet Minh also had a significant investment of artillery in the mountains surrounding Dienbienphu. Also they French used Hellcats and A26 Invaders (Tbolts and Mossies?)

@@Andrew-13579 Armee de l'Air used F8F Bearcats and B-26 Invaders. The Aeronavale had a squadron each of Hellcats and Helldivers. In May a squadron of Corsairs came on station but the Hellcat squadron was withdrawn due to pilot shortages/fatigue.

They might have a tough time. The Viet-Minh had 24 37mm AA guns along with 50-70 heavy machine guns. The 37mm's were regularly hitting aircraft up to 10,000. Spooky and Spectre do great in an environment with little to no AA capability but DBP is a different story.

B-52's carpet-bombing the surrounding hills would have kept AA fire down. A-10's and AC-130's would then have a field day. Bradleys and M1's would also have wrecked any Viet Minh who made it to close range.

Wow I thought the FACs would make it better but wasn't expecting it to be so devastating. From attack alert to spotting and effects on target was like 2.5 minutes

It is ironic you make this study here. The A-10 was created as an answer to the issues encountered in Viet Nam, just not in time. Funny you have to limit craters. A B=52 crew member from the war I worked with told me on a mission (don't know which) the target was a mountain tunnel system and the were third from last in the bomber formation over target. The mountain was already gone from earlier bomb strikes.

Great video as always! "Huguette" is pronounced "Hu-get". The "gu" in French is a hard G so you dont pronounce the second u. A soft G would be in something like "courgette".

Impressive mssion, esp the details of the setup. Too bad the server can't handle a more fulsome simulation, but you did good with what you had. I expect real life casualties would be lower owing not only to AAA, but also men digging fighting positions as they progressed toward the base. The friendly chopper kills show you need to work on your stack and "control" part of fac. Best!

Enjoy your vids. Is it really Bien Dien Phu without AA? 6 battalions of 37mm AA And that's just the tip of the AA iceberg. Try it. Let's see the A10 vs heavy WW2 AA. The NV had actually managed to emplace 17 - 37mm AA at the end of the runway. Have fun landing or taking off through that!

(My pre-battle thoughts: re the acceptable casualty rate to deem the mission successful; US amphibious assault doctrine of the period planned for a 30 percent loss rate so I would think it prudent to go with your initial thoughts of inflicting closer to 50 percent casualties to win the battle)..... end result? LOL!!! No spoilers for those who read comments before watching. Great vid and performance from all involved!

I heard a pilot comment in the video, “can’t wait for the Corsair. 30 bombs in one load!” I think you mean the A-7. I don’t know if that’s a practical load, though. You guys can use the A-4E Skyhawks right now and get 18 bombs in one load…Mk-81’s. But the Mk-81’s smaller blast might be preferable here. Of course, there are many combinations that would be interesting. Try P-47s instead of A-10’s. The 8 .50-Cals can lay down a lot of precise fire. Or try A-4s with 18 AN/M81 frag bombs or SUU ‘lazy dog’ dispensers. Although, they are not very precise. The A-4 also can carry 3 20mm gun pods. The ‘new’ bomb computer makes bombing far easier than with the F-5 or F-86. (am I selling the A-4, yet? 😄)

Great video Cap. Wouldn’t it be interesting to compare these videos with what the results would be if you used era appropriate planes. I’m thinking p47 or p51 planes would be perfect for this sort of CAS, anti infantry, and propeller planes were used in that role. They could get down and up again quite quickly too. The question is how they compare to modern jets?

The USAF equipped its first FACs in Korea with AT-6s. One guy to fly the plane and the observer to direct the supporting aircraft in.

The FAC(A)s need to have a rank order/flight commander. They then organise themselves in pairs. Targets are issued pair by pair for marking smoke. One bird drops smoke while the other watches for ground fire and covers with MG, The FAC(A) lead then calls the A-10s (who have been holding in a race-track, one by one and calls their fall of shot for the next bird. Coordination and communication will result in less doubled-up bomb drops and wasted bombs. The A-10 lead keeps his flight in order and assigns the bomb runs as they're called. The main problem with these simulations is people paying like it's Counter Strike and racing ahead and disarming the bomb makes you a legend and then your "team" wins. It needs to be more like Rainbow Six where the entire team works together at their jobs so the WHOLE team works.

The numbers you provide for French aircraft are way too high. The French would have loved to have 600 aircraft in theater. GATAC Nord (Tactical Air Group North) which covered Tonkin had 107 combat aircraft on its books at the beginning of the battle. The Transport Command had approximately 110-120 DC-3s and C-119s, the number varies on the time frame. These aircraft provided transport for all of Indochina (Tonkin, Annam, Cochin, Laos and Cambodia). Those are number of aircraft on hand, the number operationally available are about 1/4 to 1/3 less than that. Boylan & Olivier in "Valley of the Shadow" cite 14 aircraft shot down, 9 lost to operational factors (such as engine failure, or bad weather), and 16 lost on the ground (artillery bombardment or commando raids).
