Ethan Kaiser thanks for the kind words, and yea dude! Totally do it! Just remember to check your facts before you post. Like "open walkie" and keying in this for example. It's actually not the same thing. Open walkie means your surveillance is unplugged. Otherwise the ep is dead on. So basically, be careful what you post, trolls are unforgiving haha

I just discovered this channel, but I am totally digging the tips (like the "beaver board" tip on your baby plate video, or the duck clamp tip with the phone book, or big book). Fantastic tips that I'd never be able to figure out on my own.

***** I need to concentrate on the frame and the director/AD, so the walkie headset is really distracting for me. Typically my keys and 1stAC/Ops are right near me so I can just talk normally and they handle the rest

Just started watching these and it's like a video review of everything I had to learn my first day as a PA. Granted there's no substitute for the real trial by fire of figuring this stuff out in the moment and being terrified of fucking up, but these in depth lessons are textbook quality man. Thank you.

Do you guys in the film industry ever use theatre-style comms packs and headsets such as what Clearcom make in the US and Tecpro in the UK in place of standard radios? They tend to have significantly better sound quality and allow full-duplex communication unlike walkies?

OTHELLO BANACI the Motorola CP200’s are like an industry standard and I agree why they are. Even the ones I’m using here are pretty bulky and honestly were not all that good but the CP200’s are smaller and I haven’t had bad experiences with them aside from batteries eventually losing their charge. But that’s the world of batteries for ya. Even when I was a security guard when I was 18 we used those

I think there is a mistake in this video. Actually when speaking through a Walkie you should first say THEIR name and then your name because when you say your own name first people will not pay attention and need to wait until you've said their name. If you say their name first the intended person will be paying attention from the beginning.
@GripTips
@GripTips 7 жыл бұрын
Yann De Moerloose I think it can go either way and to be honest. I think I've only done it this way a couple of times. Most of the time I find myself and others just saying the other persons name "hey sean, fly in whatever whatever".
@yanndemoerloose
@yanndemoerloose 7 жыл бұрын
Hey There! Yes, you're right it can go either way. It's just that I have been trained and drilled to say it this way. Must say that my way of using it was of more use for multicamera productions than for film productions. Thanks for responding.

You've been drilled to do it the right way! Always who is being called and then who is calling.
@iainmeteorscan1555
@iainmeteorscan1555 4 жыл бұрын
@ Yann De Moerloose: Your comments are so correct! The purpose of first identifying who you are calling, BEFORE identifying yourself, is to pre-alert that person that the following message is coming through FOR THEM. Unfortunately, identifying yourself first is a common and perpetual mistake. As you say, the reason for this procedure is that every transmission can be ignored unless a transmission is preceded by your own name/ID. I cringe when I hear the incorrect usage in Hollywood films, especially where actors play professionals such as police, military and pilots, and use the incorrect etiquette. However, I guess that any “closed” communication system can use whatever etiquette (and jargon) they choose, as these guys clearly do.

As former Comm in the Marines, it drives me nuts listening to you hippies say, "Copy that" to acknowledge a request or direction on the radio. It's "Roger That" to acknowledge. Hell now you have Actors saying "Copy that" in military films because the screen writers learned how to talk on the radio on a film set.

@@vyoufinder meh, can’t please everyone. In our industry the walkies sometimes don’t key immediately so I think we typically try to delay our talking or add a word in the beginning just so “copy” or something is heard. Like “copy that” on the other end would be heard “…y that” or “copy copy” would be heard “copy”.
