Get ready for dozens of grocery store secrets everyone on a budget should learn (but that no one talks about) until now! The summer season is a busy, yet productive time for the home canner and food preserver. In this video, I'll share easy summer canning projects you'll want to make sure you make now to stock your shelves and pantry with, easy summer meals that take advantage of the summer harvest, and ways to feed your family on a budget. I'll also share the benefits of keeping a small garden, and show how much food you can harvest from a vertical, GreenStalk garden planter. Each month, I sit down in my kitchen for a "pantry chat" to share ways you can feed your family well, afford to stock pile even on a tight budget, and know what to buy (and avoid) and the grocery store. Thanks for joining me in my kitchen!

There is a grocery store across the street from my job, I stop in a couple of mornings a week to look for clearance or marked down meat. Last week I scored chicken leg quarters for under $3 a pack. It was 4-5 leg quarters in each pack. I bought 3 left one. My son cooked one pack for dinner I canned the rest. The legs I canned with the bones, the thighs I de-boned, cut up and canned. I was so proud of myself finding a great deal.

My friend, I am so proud that you are already using the 'pop-in' strategy! I love that you, like me, are leveraging already being close to a store to grab clearance items. Not too many folks do this. Did you say leg quarters for $3 a pack! What a find! You did exactly what I would've done--go ahead and cook one that defrosted and then preserve the rest. It truly keep meal time (and meats) affordable!

No worries, let your family know a fuller freezer works better... It's the refrigerator that works better with air that circulates. The fuller the better for a freezer. 🥳 I enjoy your videos (new subscriber) thank you so much for everything you do ❤️

My freezer that stands alone definitely can be filled all the way. But where i live, we have cheap, small fridges with the freezer on the top. Anytime we allow the vent at the back to get covered-there are no built in shelves, and even boxes can cause this problem-it can shut down our whole fridge, unable to cool any of it adequately. Si yes, if yiu are talking about a freezer that is just a freezer, it works much better to have it full. But if you have a fridge that depends on cold air from the top freezer, you can ruin it by covering the vent, or at least destroy the food. And that x-many cubic feet of freezer space is a lie, because so much clearance is necessary just to keep the fridge operating.

Hello folks: Fill a cup with water place in freeze after water frozen but a quarter on top. Now if you went away for weeks and power goes out you can use this a gauge how much or any damages was done. Or save money by making Block of ice that fill up any free space If you need the room relex it's just water. As the ice will save your food as air will not on power outage. Stand up freezer beware each time the door is open out goes all of the cold from the bottom. Vs top load hold the cold in. Cardboard mid bottom door idea.

For any family members who give you a hard time about filling your freezer, you have some ammo. A full freezer is MORE efficient. than one that's only 3/4 or 1/2 full. 'Air flow' isn't as necessary in a freezer as it is in a fridge. You can even check any freezer manual to verify this info. That would likely be the reason as to why you didn't 'lose' as many things as you feared, b/c you had it pretty full before it kicked it!

Hi Jade! Honey, I'm so happy you find these pantry chats helpful! I totally remember. being in your shoes and it took me a few years to figure everything out, so I'm happy to pass along my "kitchen strategy." The biggest thing is to have a plan in place before you go to the store and once you bring it home to use everything up as best as you can. That way you won't over pay. I'm hoping to get even more organized and create a printable newsletter for the previous pantry chats and ones moving forward so that people can take that to the grocery store. Hope you're having a great weekend!

Hi Heather! Awww, I love the downtown Frederick shopping district! I actually grew up a stone's throw from there (Hagerstown). This was a looooong chatty pantry chat, perfect for a drive. And yes, I'm relieved that I snagged a new/used freezer. Hope your weekend is off to a great start!

@@BecomingaFarmGirl I am very familiar with Hagerstown! I worked out there for a bunch of years (while I lived in Frederick). The weekend is indeed off to a lovely start! We had an outdoor gig at a Brewery (just north of Frederick) on this gorgeous day. And then I spent time learning from and enjoying listening to you, on the drive home. There is always room for more learning. And you are so genuine, its like I'm listening to one of my girlfriends. Thank you! ❤️

LISTEN, you are so right. I was like, "Is this really how y'all gon' act as good as you eat around here?" Freezers inevitably break so don't be pointing fingers! LOL. I knew other farm girl, like you, on the channel would understand this unnecessary grief I'm getting! :)

I was joking with the kids when it was time for their show at night. I said, oh ... we're going to learn about saving on groceries! I turned this video on and my son just started laughing and then the kids couldn't stop laughing. Your demeanor and facial expressions just struck him so funny in that moment. They had me start the beginning over several times. Maybe they were overtired, but just wanted to let you know how much laughter they enjoyed! 😃😂

Oh my heart breaks for you! Power outages are devastating and stressful in the worst way. I’ve come to realize that the best prep is to have the skill of canning. One day I’d like to have an outdoor propane stove so that in the event of a power outage I could can what’s in my freezers. Even though we live in a “modern” society; the basic life skills are still priceless!

The guides that come with a freezer point out that full freezers are more efficient than ones with more empty space. Frozen food holds cold, air does not every time you open the door. They used to tell us to fill the empty space with blown up balloons to hold cold air. You do want to avoid a lot of weight in the door to protect hinges and seal alignment.

Have I said it before? 😉 I just love your vlogs. Anyone who doesn’t thoroughly appreciate a feisty Cassandra just plain doesn’t have good sense. 😊 I’m sure your husband would be scandalized if he saw my freezer, but I go with the philosophy that a full freezer has more stable temperatures so doesn’t need to run as often. That’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it. 😂 Blessings to you and your precious family.

You DO want to keep your freezer full. Leave 2" clearance in the back to give it good circulation. Fill the empty spaces with used milk jugs filled w/water (leave room in the jug -8 oz). Will really help w/elec bill.

18:50 OMG your hair is so adorable with the wide headband like that. You totally are rocking that look even in the wee hours of the morning. The difference between dried flowers and dead flowers is the same as the difference between dehydrated fruit and rotten fruit. Do you use a dehydrator to dry the flowers? That was an amazing deal on the freezer! But with respect to your family, I think they are wrong. You *should* fill your freezer (but not overload it). At least you should keep some bottles of frozen water in there. It helps the freezer run more efficiently. : ) Plus, frozen water is inexpensive, will help keep the freezer cold longer if there's a power outage, and is easy to defrost if you need the space.

Girl, you need a tomato/berry corer! Found mine at the local grocery store for under $3. You will have much less waste of your strawberries with one. We also use them to remove seed cores from cucumbers and zucchini, use them so much we now have a second one. Oh, and what about turning some of that leftover blueberry juice into a syrup?! I'm all about finding those sales, especially on meats. Found chicken breasts for 99 cents/lb and learned how to can Ugly Chicken!!! And my pantry is just bursting with pre-cooked and canned ground beef and turkey now. Wish I could grow lettuce like you. Praise the Lord for blessing you with a freezer!!!!! I've discovered that Ziploc now makes those reusable silicone bags. Found some for $1.29 at the grocery store. So nice to see your mom so happy for you 🙂

I am a single 65 year old female and I live in a tiny condo. I no longer have a yard for a garden. But I do have five closets and a small patio so I’m transitioning to indoor and outdoor hydroponics. I have a very small freezer section and no room for an additional freezer. Therefore, I dehydrate most of what I used to keep in the freezer. I’ve turned a walk in closet into an indoor green house and another closet into a pantry (I have very little kitchen storage). However, storing meat has always been a challenge. I don’t like the dehydrated meats and freeze dried is too expensive. I have a small electric pressure cooker that I use all the time. I have successfully canned some small batches in it so I’m going to try canning to meat and save up for a larger electric pressure canner. (I’m not comfortable with the stove top canners and most tend to be aluminum which will not work on a induction cooktop). I just subscribed to your channel because you offer information that is most relevant to my personal situation. (And you do it in the most engaging manner)

Hey Barbara! You struck gold at .99/lb! Honey I bought a total of 5 hams this Easter (2 before and 3 more after). I've canned so many ham and (bean, corn, soup, etc) recipes and I've tucked slices of it in the freezer and used the bones for bone meal. What a blessing. And yes, always compare prices; these grocery stores can really try to hard ball consumers, so you've got to be savvy and shop around!
