Bella is so good with the younger kids. Her gentle reminders to get things for dinners and veggies were awesome. I like that the younger boys were involved and chose things for their siblings as well. Good job kids.

My mom first let me do the grocery shopping "all by myself" when I was 12. Everyone in the store was so impressed. I kept getting compliments. My mom just followed me from a distance down the aisles and let me put everything on the list in the cart. She would ask me questions about how to find the best priced items, or how to look for sugar and salt contents. If I couldn't find an item, she told me to find a staff member, and ask on my own. It was so great! One of my best memories was her being seriously surprised at how well I did 'on my own,' and telling me how proud she was of me at learning a new life skill.

Bella and the younger ones did a great job. It's already for adults difficult to prep meals and shop groceries, let alone for kids who hardly can cook nor know recipes. Bella really is a patient and predominant sibling. I wonder wether it wouldn't be easier to teach the youngest ones first how to cook and shop for their favorite/simple meal? Instead for a week. It is great to see, they give it a go to learn life skills. Thanks for sharing and keep exploring and learning.😊

I was very impressed with their shopping skills. Bella was key to them buying any fruit and vegetables. I think it was sweet they bought items for siblings that they knew they liked. I saw Aurora buying Outshine bars that I know Hannah likes to eat. They bought chorizo for Luke and Jake because they know they like it. They may not have bought enough but they made good choices. 😊

I think it's great letting the kids buy groceries. It gives them a better understanding of organization and how much stuff really cost. My mom let me do it once. She gave me a $100 dollar bill. I was supposed to buy groceries for 1 week. This was around 1975...I spent $99.50...lol..we had enough groceries for over a month...I had my car loaded...and there were only 4 in my family...oh well!...lol

I think a week was too overwhelming for such young kids. Give them a day only (breakfast, lunch and dinner can be the leftovers), a set budget and encourage them to make things from scratch so they understand the components in certain foods. Brody wanted pizza - let him look for premade dough, pizza sauce, the right cheese and toppings Aurora wanted pancakes - help her understand you need flour, eggs, milk,etc. This can also help with them understanding their siblings’ dietary needs. Looking at a pancake you might not realise Hannah, Aaron and Halie can’t eat it. But when you break it down and explain that flour is gluten, milk is dairy, you get such a larger range of topics taught doing the same activity.

When I was around 11 or 12 years old, my mom used to send me to the store on my own to get what we needed for dinner. Granted, we lived four blocks from the grocery store and this was back in the early 2000s. 😂 One of the best things I’ve ever found, was great for learning to cook, is just following random recipes to start with, but also just experimenting with spices. On the one time I made baked chicken and I don’t remember everything that I put on it but one of them was cinnamon and it’s a different type of spice but it worked 🤷🏻‍♀️

Joy just took a seat while waiting for dinner. 😂 We boil chicken and mix it with a little of the chicken broth and kibble for our dog. We go through about one to two chicken breasts a week for him.

I fostered a boy with type 1 diabetes and each week he would make his own supermarket list for one new meal we would cook together and other things he needed. He would go around looking at the amount of carbohydrates as to whether he could eat it or not. He learnt a lot and he loved it. He had never been to a supermarket or restaurant before he came to me so it was exciting for him. It also meant he wasn't bored during the shop.

Before she even asked, I had a feeling that Aurora was going to say ramen. Favorite food :-) so amazing job for the first time of the little kids doing this. However, I did pick the wrong day to catch up on the video because I don’t know what made me do it but he scheduled my doctors appointment for the afternoon and I have to get blood work done so I haven’t eaten anything all day and I’m just so hungry. Lol I must admit I noticed your Walmart has plastic bags! I went once and in our state they don’t have plastic bags. Needless to say I went shopping didn’t have my own bags and when I asked the girl what to do she said I can buy there’s which were small and 1.00 each which I would need quiet a few so I just had to put all my items (frozen food bread meats ect.) back in my cart and load them in my car that way. I was like oh dear this is gonna be fun bring the groceries in the house

If you like flavor buy sofrito it's usually frozen but you can make it yourself too. A spoonful in your ground beef is amazing. I think Aaron will love it.

Maybe Crystal and Aaron could do some step by step recipes with the younger ones example making biscuits from scratch and have them measuring ingredients etc, would be fun to watch. I remeber when i was around 7 or 8 a local grocery store had this drawing kids could enter it was a shopping spree just for kids and i was one of the winners i think their was like 5 kids that won. We were given a time to come when the store was closed and each kid had workers to push the cart and help us get stuff but our parents had to wait and see what we pick out. It was a 1 hour shopping spree and a two cart limit. I remember the workers telling my parents they should be proud of me cause i got eveones favorites and i knew exactly what was needed for so many meals and didn't go crazy on the junk food sugary stuff. While i did not understand the concept of how much was needed for our family of 5 my little sister was still a baby. They really could not complain with how much meat i got 4 packages of everything insted of like 4 pork chops i got 4 packs of pork chops. I remember i also picked out 3 of every kind of baby food my reasoning was she needed one jar for each meal. They were so proud of me in the end i did get some sweets and junk food but i was also very thoughtful of real meal stuff, i remember my dad saying good thing we have room in the big freezer and extra fridge for all that meat and the other cold stuff.
