Sobeys is pilot-testing a high-tech shopping cart that allows shoppers to skip the checkout line. But as Richard Southern reports, the grocery store chain insists the ‘smart cart’ isn’t intended to replace cashiers.

In the Netherlands we already have that for a long time, but simplified, you can just grab a self scanner at the entrance of the shop (you can also choose to do it just the old way), that’s not attached to the shopping cart, and you then scan your own products, and at the end, you go to the special cash deck for the “self scanners”, and they scan your QR code or so on your self scanner and then they can scan your products in one scan...

In the UK, we have something like this, but it works better than this idea. You carry a scanner with you and you can scan your items as you go, and then all you have to do is put it back and scan your card when you’re done. And the produce weighing machines have barcodes you can also scan. Eliminates the idea of an unsanitary cart or carts having to be cleaned, a lot cheaper, and it doesn’t cost anyone their job because there are actually staff assigned to help you pay when you’re finished. This is basically a more expensive version of it and seems really pointless tbh.

Even self check out can be a pain if traffic not aware of what they doing, and so a checker gotta check and fix anything at time. i think most time it minor or just too complex to use at time. i dont think all store use same kinda machine or software anytime, so makes it a pain to use sometimes.

This is kind of neat! Um for some reason i like this idea more that that other idea when they replaced all the old checkout lines with computers🤔. I just like the fact its actually stuck right on the cart now lol. Ohh, i made myself alittle sad now by mentioning the those old checkout lines😢. When i was little i always thought it was so neat!, the conveyor belt and all those buttons.

I thought of this a few years ago but not quite as advanced and high tech. With prices going up and up almost between every week I’m sure it has more shoppers than myself going for groceries with a budget. I’d be happy with a cart that simply scanned what I put into it to know my exact total with taxes and all included before heading to the till. This way instead of skipping wants on the shelves for needs, I could complete my shopping list and know if I’ve gone over, or if I have that little extra at the end to go back and get that expensive pepperoni I thought I would’t have enough for lol.

If Nothing ELSE. I feel like carts should have aisle trackers for items we are searching for @each particular store( or maybe create an app for this) That way cashiers can keep their jobs, and we consumers don't have to annoyingly search for items...we'd have a tracker for the foods we want like we track uber/instacart etc.....🤔

Some stores are turning our phones into scanners so we essentially become our own self check out. Sams Club for example has an app called scan and go. As I shop, I scan the products, swipe right to pay, and head towards the exits where staff scans my proof barcode so I can leave. This saves me 15-30 minutes every week. This cart is basically the same thing. The only difference that I see is higher prices being pushed on consumers so the store can have these fancy carts.

I don't think this cart would work at my nearby Cox Cash Saver. Not just because they're a budget store. But because people take the carts home with them. Literally we're constantly borrowing them because a lot of folks don't have any cars. It's awesome. Every few days this pretty big pickup comes along & loads them into the back of it. You just leave in a spot they can easily see it like by the dumpsters or on grass. They also have a number they ask you to call if there's one in a really unusual spot. Normally though I just use my easy wheels cart because it's easier on me. But I've used random sitting around carts to take stuff to my storage unit just up the street.

Jobs for who ? Computer programmers and highly educated people etc Where does that leave others? Without employment . There is going to be a lot of people out of work on social assistance to get by or unemployment. More overload for food banks too. I prefer a regular cart and hope not all stores do this. I can hardly imagine seniors trying to use this to shop . For many it will be a bit intimidating.
