Unfortunately, the FDA cannot inspect every batch of every food sold everywhere in the country at every step of the way. This means it is difficult to impossible to completely block it.

I wish more people, especially younger americans, would read your comment. So many people in the US today seem to have no idea that produce is actually supposed to smell and taste very strongly, and don't realize it until they travel and eat in a country that still produces and sells unadaultered food

It’s not about being sophisticated we are literally not there and not in control

I worked in preclinical pharmaceutical research and I can tell you the same thing happens there. We were ALWAYS briefed before the FDA or other agencies came to inspect. Yes, the inspections were ALWAYS announced beforehand. Management would tell us NOT to talk to the inspectors, and if the inspectors asked us a question we were to refer them to management. I am 100% sure that the FDA and other agencies were aware of this charade; it was only done so that everyone could say that they were in compliance with the law. Because of my experience and knowing what goes on behind the scenes I am very conservative as to what I put in my body pharmaceutical-wise. I did not and will not get any of the COVID vaccines for that reason.

Another scary thing to consider, that kind of employment bullying apparently happens in the medical field too. Roommate worked at a major hospital chain across town for a few years before deciding to go back to the fast food place he'd left prior to the hospital, I'd asked him about it and he said he should've known the after interview application paperwork was the first red flag. To paraphrase him it said 'trying to start or join a union is grounds for immediate termination ontop of a strangely specific NDA', he went on to explain that despite working the 24/7 cafeteria they were only inspected biannually and that management would always shuffle schedules around so their most quiet and loyal employees would be the only ones working that day. I'm no medical professional, but the most concerning detail he brought up to me about why he quit, was that the 'sharps bin' was moved into the kitchen but opposite of the open hallway leading into the kitchen; one of those biohazard boxes to toss bloody tools or contaminated dishware into, was not 15 feet away from the stove tops, yet to put something filthy into it you had to carry it through the active kitchen. I laughed it off until he shown me a snapshot he took while filling in for a graveyard shift, but when I asked him for more he just told me "there's reasons every position below management is a revolving door" and hasn't spoken about it since, at least he's found mundane joy in being a cashier again.

Well the fact that people outside the US commonly get sick eating anything in the US proves the food here isn't great.

Exactly. We have to flip the package over and read the list of ingredients. If I see sugar in any form, I put it back on the shelf. If I see complex scientific names for chemicals, I google it on my phone. I try to shop the perimeter of the store only, quit eating processed foods, and cook everything. There are so many chemicals in our foods. And we need more inspectors for sure.

Yeah, we have a lot of those in Europe because calling things what they aren't is fraud but saying they're a substitution is legit. So we have natural ingredient "flavour" treats. We have place of of origin "style" foods. They're even talking about changing how the word "milk" is used for anything that doesn't come out of the mammaries of a mammal because almonds and oats don't lactate. So expect "oat based milk style drink" to be a thing. A big news story recently is that the company that makes Toblerone is having to change their packaging because they no longer exclusively manufacture their chocolate in Switzerland so they cannot use the Swiss Alps on their packaging or any other image that might mislead people into thinking it is of Swiss origin.

You need to buy Ceylon Cinnamon, a TRUE cinnamon. Many other are NOT cinnamon and are taken from other parts of the plant. I get my cinnamon on line from Penzy's Spices. I don't have allergies and admit I will use Penzy's Saigon Cinnamon in holiday baking because I use so much of it and the Ceylon is pretty expensive. There are no additives added to any of their products so I have not had any issued giving my baking to people.

Other than western Europe (for now), most of these other countries that have a norm of organic produce and meats have far more poverty and lower standards of living than the US. It's just a shame such a wealthy country like the US has such garbage food available. Semitropical and tropical environments make it easy to grow food without even trying. In the bottom half of Mexico, you can drop seeds on the ground and a tree or plant will pop up on its own, without caretaking. I've heard it's like this in other countries like the former British colony islands and most of Latin America. Still, the quality of life is impacted by other factors other than food.

I think the Mediterranean counties have healthier diets in general. More importantly, when I travel in Europe, I walked a lot more since driving for me is difficult. Taking Metro, Subway, tubes made you walk more, especially up/ down the stairs! Additionally, walking let's me see more things than sitting in group tour bus.

EU food safety standards are higher than in US, which typically takes a 'self-regulation' strategy like with meat processors. It's more likely it tasted different to you because it was unadulterated.

I have been living in the US for 25 years. I mostly buy unprocessed food and cook it. The quaity is excellent.

where are you from originally? i always hear about the culture shock when it comes to our food from foreigners... how everything tastes sweet and often things taste like plastic. i feel like us americans get slammed a lot for it, but what choice do we have? these are the foods our government provides to us. even seeds for growing our own food are hard to find non gmo and organic thanks to the whole monsanto controversy, and the government makes it very very hard for farmers to give natural food to community. many permits, inspections, and hoops to jump through and they will shut you down and fine your for any slip in violation.

1000%, I spent time in Europe when I was in the army, took a couple of weeks for my taste to adjust and everything including McDonald’s tasted better, and I felt better. When I got back to the US I couldn’t eat food here for months unless I made it.

I read a very interesting statistic a couple days ago, if one in three households in the US raised their own chickens, there would be no factory farm industry for eggs. Its past time for people to go back to creating/ gathering as much of their own food as possible.

@ericpmoss A friend of mine lived in an HOA and raised her food in flowerpot on her deck. She had corn, beans, tomatoes, Brussel sprouts, along with her flowers to make it astheticly pleasing. The flowers were edible or could be made into tea. If they have sliding glass doors or can buy grow lights, they can raise their own food inside, out of HOA eyes.

only problem is the ground/soil is now chemically jacked, laws against having chickens/animals unless you a farmer then they control how you feed cause you need money to farm. so just have to cut back eating all the time fast, hope for the best

Countries that don't have these problems pay their public servants VERY well. HIGH incomes. Removes the itch to accept a little something on the side. When the U.S. is willing to do that, the problem will get much better.

theres also many great and safe parmesan replacement, cheaper versions one can use like on pizza or in dishes where one would hesitate to use the real stuff( I like Parmesan and could have it on most of stuff, in restaurant its always hard task to tell waiter to stop adding it), one I know about is from Czechia I think from Gran Moravia, its of course EU compliant so its not named parmesan but its still quality hard cheese of similar type and correctly labeled so one knows what he's using.

I bought an ice cream cone at Walgreens on an extremely hot day. I thought: This will melt by the time I get home; I need to eat it right away. In spite of the extreme heat, the ice cream did not melt. It did not taste like ice cream. I read the label, which said it was frozen dairy dessert. They charge ice cream prices for fake ice cream.

It is a good idea to eat less processed food, eventually eliminate them altogether. The trashfood has taken over the globe and now with awareness we can fight back. The way to fight back is by choosing health or work (researching, building relationships, etc.) over convenience.

My thought of processed food is heavily processed foods and I semi consider baking anything as heavily processing food, even if you are the one baking regardless if you're using "clean" ingredients. If you mean "stop eating street food and McDonald's" then I'll have you know friend that I have not had a single fast food "food" since 2015 or 16. But I do still have cheese, yogurt, sausages, sourdough bread, butter and the like, which as you know are processed foods. So when you say "cut out processed foods", which ones? Also keep in mind that olive oil is processed food and so is any other oil.

In general we should always buy the more expensive food choices as realistically real food should be expensive (based on inflation). There are articles online that list the real olive oil companies.

for families like mine stuck living in an apartment because we can't afford to buy a home, growing our own food isn't an option either. our unit is in a completely shaded area, in an already cloudy/overcast state. i can't even keep houseplants alive from how little sunshine we get. it's unfortunate, but i do what i can in other areas. we forage for mushrooms in the fall and pick berries when we can as well, keep them in the freezer or dehydrate them. i've also learned that artificial vanilla is literally made from plastic, so i've started to make my own. it's very easy, a child could even do it.

@@lettus143 Artificial vanilla is synthetic, but it is the same molecule that gives normal vanilla most of its taste. So while it is a different product, it is literally the same substance. So whether it is made from wood pulp (lignin), clove oils (eugenol), or petrochemical sources (guaiacol), the last being what is done today, there is no real difference. Vanilla extract just has a variety of other chemicals that give it a slightly more rounded taste in non cooked goods especially. So of all the "artificial" foods, that's one I wouldn't worry about.

Growing food is one of the easiest things a kid can do and is common sense for like most 5yr olds, if they have suitable land sun water and in the growing season. Convince gov to let everyone that wants use an acre of free tax free land to grow their own food and live on. Ban farm subsidies. Food forest. Rain collection. Grey water system. Automatic watering system. Ban public school.

This is another issue that is mired in politics. One group wants no regulation and doesn't believe in science and the other group are called communists. So we the people pay the price rfor that. I always have a vegetable garden and use no pesticides. Sometimes I lose to some critters and so be it. It's so nice to pick a tomato and not have to worry about it being sprayed with stuff. I can't grow enough to feed us for the year but I usually have a lot of tomatoes and green beans in the freezer.

I worked at an ice cream factory.. ice cream must contain 10% fat from cream, and shiping cream is expensive so we would buy butter fat from out of country not pure fat but 51% sugar so it don't count as a dairy product. Its all a shell game of skirting regulations. Then we switched to calling it frozen dessert, and made it from cheep palm oil.

And your ice cream only means the 10% fat came from cream, can be butter fat, imported as a sugar product cuz its 51% sugar to avoid tariffs.

LOL you can literally go to a grocery store and buy fruits and vegetables to cook something for the week at cheaper price per meal that it would cost you to go to McDonald's... fast-food chains are all over the world doesn't mean you need to go to them, so this just sounds ridiculous LOL sounds more like you're making excuses for the fact that you're choosing to go to these "abundant" fast food chains instead of cooking healthy food for yourself... also Vancouver out of anywhere in Canada has the most healthy option food places that exist.... It's not too crazy if you hit up a Farmer's Market which are plentiful throughout BC, many farms also sell direct to consumer. Going to any big box grocery store and fresh food is over priced ;but that's the price of convenience.

Yet, the number of charges, convictions and penalties imposed are so low that most companies will take their chances. The consumer cares about low prices and won't penalize a company with low prices, even if the company was convicted of fraud

Fresh made without preservatives is delicious but goes bad very quickly. I don't enjoy spending my life making food.

I have too mushrooms right now (bought fresh from market down the road from the farm), so I put it in everything and look up more recipes that use it. Also, real honey and maple syrup don't go bad, ever. If it does, other than the strange white mold thing on maple syrup that's not dangerous at all, it's fake. Do you mean you don't like cooking or wasting food?

If you have a job you are a capitalist unless it's 100% for charity. (I realize such obvious facts are left out of typical Marxist college indoctrination) Governments theoretically can limit fraud which has nothing inherent to do with profits, but governments are the ultimate monopoly which means poor performance.
