My childhood favorite--I have almost a complete run. My dad and I used to bond over this. He still says "who says Groo is slow of mind?" now and then :)

Groo has such an interesting history, the long run(s) (10 years without any missed months at Marvel alone), the unchanging team of 4 (that really makes me happy) and the definitive format, that´s also never really changed. The introduction (from some point they even start each issue with a one-page intro by Sergio, printed on the inside-front cover), a crazy 2-page-spread with awesome title lettering and a poem at the beginning and a full page-splash with a moral at the end. Reminds me a bit of European funny comics like Asterix and Lucky Luke. They changed it up with the Miniseries format at some point and stuck with that too. Of course there is a lot of repetition and they acknowledge that, but I could never get mad at an issue of Groo. It´s just so competently done in every way and clearly a labour of love. Wish they would put the older trades back in print and continue republishing all the pre-Dark Horse stuff.

As a very young child, my two favorite Madmen, Sergio Aragones along with Antonio Prohias (Spy vs Spy), drew(!) me into the world of Mad Magazine. No words in their drawings, very convenient for a kid who couldn't yet read. Luckily I learned how to read before Groo started publishing and I could enjoy the very rare situation where SAs characters had dialogue. Viva Aragones!

I met Sergio, Tom Luth and Mark Evanier as a kid, still have their autographs on a backing board along with Alfredo Alcala.

Another great one. I would pay serious money if someone ever put out a big collection of all of Aragones' Marginals from Mad Magazine.

Groo is what got me collecting comics back in the day. I had grown up on MAD magazine and saw an issue of Groo and recognized Sergio's artwork I was so fond of in those MAD magazine margins. Started on issue 14 and bought every back issue and appearance since then.

Groo the Wanderer is awesome. The comic goes on for over a hundred issues because of all the great characters and stories that Groo runs into. Really fun read.

Fawcett published paperback compendiums of Sergio Aragones's Mad work in the 70's. I still have about five of 'em on my bookshelf. I remember taking a school field trip in 6th grade, 1978, and every other kid either had Sergio Aragones Mad books or word-finds.

Scott VanderPloeg's AE Index page is a great resource and you can see a bunch of pages from the Groo Artist Edition there. I don't see any paste-ups and, aside from a little blue pencil, the pages are very clean. They also show Aragone's little thumbnails with his scribbled notes giving some direction and it seems as if that must be what Evanier writes from and it's likely Sakai letters from the script onto blank boards, and then Sergio just fills in the remaining space. Evanier would be the obvious source to consult on this.

Groo had a long history in Norwegian comics publishing, starting during the Pacific era already, and continuing for a long while during the Marvel/Epic era, at first as its own book, then as the main feature in a monthly comics anthology.

Yooo! Bring on the Bande dessinée boys! Next you might enjoy getting your mitts on the main Donjon books by Trondheim and Sfar et al - they're fun, darkly funny comics where nothing quite goes to plan which still manage to be full of real heartache and pathos in such a ridiculous setting.

Met him at a convention in Orlando and he signed a stack of books for me. He was also in a comedy skit show I believe in the late 70's that he would draw the topics they were talking about in that specific show. Incredible!!!

In later PC issues, Groo slices open a horde of attackers with graphic violence never to be seen with the Marvel Publications. You guys need to to check that out.

Definitely check the mid-period stuff for comparison. Aragones dials in the characters visually and arrives at really icon designs.

I love Groo The Wanderer, am I the only one who thinks there should be a crossover of Groo The Wanderer, Hagar The Horrible, and Asterix and Obliex, I mean seriously that would be a great comic and it would be a crossover/team up from Heaven, why hasn't a writer or artist thought about this and then find a way to go through with it.
