I love how he says you just sit down and start playing it, and then never explains how to do it. This groove took me a little while to get, not that easy.

I'll give some info its all clave based and usually ( traditionally) Is played slow. Songo is usually on of the slower tempos in salsa. If u want to be considered good at it learn to play it slow rather than fast

I see, in my case I love latin music. And coming from Peru, where you have radio stations playing salsa the whole day, you just feel the thing. Isn't Horacio Hernandez a teacher at MI, as well? if he is, try to get the patterns from him, he has very cool licks that require a huge-ass of independence. Look for him, Dafnis Prieto or Alex Acuña. Antonio Sanchez is also amazing.

It's sometimes nicer when you do the contracampana pattern at times instead of only plain 4th notes

Tumbao, the & of 2 then 4! Learn all your hand patterns over this and it will give you lots of millage in your playing.

I made a mistake, I found out the contracampana pattern is what you play tipically in the timbale during the high dynamics of a song. I wanted to refer to the pattern the bongo player does with the cowbell when he stops playing the bongo. Only latin monsters like Horacio Hernandez or Dafnis Prieto play it like that. I wanted to mean Quarter notes, not 4th notes. 30 years of playing and never heard the word contracampana? I guess u're not much into latin, then...
