Singer Tim Burgess was a hero during covid lockdown by hosting his nightly twitter listening parties. Each night at a certain time everyone would listen to a selected classic album and comment about what it means to them on twitter with a band member or two from the featured band adding some inside details about the songs and recordings. He even got Paul McCartney to join in to do his latest album.

@franohmsford7548
@franohmsford7548 3 жыл бұрын
They weren't underrated in the mid 90s - I was constantly hearing the media rave about them and how they were better than Oasis and Blur! They didn't hit the mainstream consciousness like Oasis, Blur, Pulp and Suede though or the Verve and the Manic Street Preachers later on. The Charlatans were just always there as one of those bands that if you were into Britpop you were EXPECTED to like {Personally I found them OK but nothing special}.

@franohmsford7548
@franohmsford7548 3 жыл бұрын
@@personalcheeses8073 I think because people mistake "Forgotten" for "Underrated". You can't say that The Charlatans have stood the test of time like Blur or Oasis or The Stone Roses yet back in the mid 90s they were up there with those three bands and Suede, The Manics, Radiohead, Cast, Space, Sleeper, Elastica - I could go on and on! Personally I'd say that Cast and Sleeper are the real Underrated Bands of the group as even in the 90s they didn't get the respect they deserved. But Cast had 7 UK Top 10s whilst The Charlatans only had 4! It's not all about the Charts - Indie Fans in the UK eulogised The Charlatans whilst they were like "Cast are OK"!

So much more than a song. Part of the Manchester scene in the early 90's when the world rave scene (EDM which only took off in the US 25+ years later) centred around Manchester whilst they also produced the best Indie (Independent) bands in the UK. I was in my late teens in Manchester at the time and felt like I lived in the centre of the world. No doubt there was a 4/5 year period from 1989 - 1994 when Manchester ruled the world in music. The Hacienda was the most famous club in the world. I remember people from everywhere asking for directions when I was on nights out. Take a look at this kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oNmVgrulyrOpdn0.html from 1989 when the scene was exploding. For a real lesson watch kzfaq.info/get/bejne/is5ldLKTzcqulqc.html US reaction to Manchester's music scene in 1990.

The riff is basically Hush by Deep Purple. I've loved The Charlatans since those real "indie" days. Used to spin Tellin Stories (great album) in between playing Oasis. They had a standalone single not so long ago called Totally Eclipsing that rocked in a Paperback Writer kind of way. Or try their first single "Indian Rope" or fan favourite "Sproston Green" They lost their signature sound (sixties Hammond organ) when their keyboardist was tragically killed in a car crash in 1996. From Wiki; Collins' death occurred some three weeks before The Charlatans' biggest concert to date-supporting Oasis at Knebworth. Oasis's lead singer Liam Gallagher said "live forever, mate" as a dedication to Collins and introduction to their song "Cast No Shadow".

This is from a weird in between period in Alternative Rock from like 1988-1992. It was a trip hop Alt rock dance type beats in Manchester England where most of those bands you mentioned also were kind of big here like The Stone Roses, Inspiral Carpets, Blur, Happy Mondays, Oasis and a bunch of others.

Would love to see you react to: 1) The Style Council - “walls come tumbling down”. (I could see you guys appreciating the musical talent and energy of it) Also “You’re the best thing” by The Style Council. 2) Inspiral Carpets - “Caravan” 3) Saint Etienne - “Only love can break your heart. 4) Big Country - “Look Away” I was actually coming here tonight to ask for The Charlatans, so was so pleased to see it :) I was lucky enough to be there for the Madchester movement.. late 80’s, early 90’s around the acid house era. The Hacienda nightclub in Manchester was the place to be ❤️ It was such a great era, right before the rave scene exploded on a more global scale. Loving your vids! Thank you ⭐️

These guys used to practice, before they made it big, in a record shop called omega records in the town centre where I live. Always had the windows open to the room where they were so me and my mates used to sit or dance around outside on the town square listening to them, EPIC TIMES 😂 I think the record store owner was managing them.

Love the Charlies! Also a huge INXS fan, never made the link between them, but can see what you mean there. Oh they are still going and still play Glastonbury regularly. They are touring soon in UK. I'm in Australia and seen them twice here.
