Is it the lighting or metering? yes and no. Making group portraits with various skin tones does not need to be overly complicated.

An incident/flash meter would be helpful in this situation too! Thanks Daniel and have a good weekend! 😎👍🇨🇦

I'm a black guy who has been shooting 50 years, and you've been shooting nearly as long I think. Remember Kodachrome II? That was a very contrasty film, yet we saw gloriously beautiful bright-sun Kodachrome work of dark-skins and bright surfaces in National Geographic. Lots of photographers were able to correctly expose with detail in wedding shots of dark tuxedos and white lace wedding gowns. Yes, it was a matter of flattening the contrast of the light. I also tried to move darker subjects closer to the light source. In my Canon cameras, I've used the Canon Picture Profile Editor to load a custom profile with a flatter tonal curve into the camera (like using a film with a flatter tonal curve).

Thanks (as always) for the explanation. This was the situation I had in Vegas, on the street, at night in 2019. Random couple asked for a photo. The photos were so terrible, I've avoided this since then. Now I can 'experiment' and not feel bad as at least I have a formula I understand.

This weekend I shot a wedding with the problem discussed in this clip. A bridegroom in a black suit with a darker skin tone and a pale bride in white. I shot it as flat I could and with some tweaks in CaptureOne I got a descent result. 😅

I have often seen photographers on KZfaq bring an image into Lightroom and pull the contrast slider right down then work on the image from there. Interesting approach to editing but they generally come up with a good looking result.

If my understanding is correct, then don't camera picture profiles (standard, neutral etc) only apply to the JPEG and not the RAW image? Was your suggestion perhaps intended towards when you preview the image on the camera screen, which is typically the jpeg with the profile applied? Or does the profile in some way influence how the metering is interpreted?

If you were photographing multiple subjects, some with pale Caucasian skin, and some with dark African-American skin, would the optimal lighting strategy be to evenly light the group, or to add more light to the African American subjects, either by feathering the light towards them (if using 1 light) or by using 2 lights, with more illumination on them?

Daniel, when you say a flat profile, do you mean shooting in RAW or using a Picture Control (Nikon) like "Flat" or "Portrait"? What about skin colours when some people are very pink / red and others are yellow (makeup)?

I have the same question. I figured shooting camera RAW already did that for us🤔
