That's what I did. I bought a Chinese carbon frame and built it up for less than 2200 dollars and have placed and won a lot of races in the past four years on it . Recently I helped a friend who bought a 27.5 online and with a few good used parts, (wheels, crank, forks, cassette, bars ) turned it into a podium placing xc racer weighing right at 10.1 kilos for less than $1300.

GCN should have a scrapyard wars battle kind of like Linus Tech Tips: Essentially all the presenters get 1k to build or buy their own bike. It could be a mix of online or used parts and the presenters should have some challenges on it like they did with the 100 pound bike ebay challenge.

@@jeffreyhill1589 even if GCN can its still up to the crew (camera man + producer + additional personnel) who can handle multiple shoots at the same time - which is a huge cost and resources. Linus had envisioned that really early on., he's a gigachad really.

@@wilyamiyoo yup, people scoffed at his editing team and editing servers saying he has too big a team and spending too much money. Linus knew he needed to invest in the channel to grow. The choice of paint of symbolic to the doping era from which the frame was born. Covering the Armstrong imagery with a Lemond-scheme is a nod to the two riders disdain for one another. Then covering the disaster of the tricolor with the beautiful Celeste reminds me of a nod to Ulrich or Pantani, two adversaries of Armstrong, both associated with Bianchi. It would have been hard for me not to put gumwalls on this bike and have it end up looking like Jumbo-Visma. Thanks Jon for putting this video series up. Ive broken out my 1918 Trek 613 and am doing the same restoral project.

It would fit with the intent of the experiment too. The economics of engineering is one of diminishing returns; designers do the cheap, high impact things first, and then the slightly less cost effective things, and then finally when you get to the "super" category, like "supercars", you're scraping the bottom of the barrel for ridiculous things you can do that make negligible difference. Leaving stuff out is de rigeur. A supercar won't might not have air conditioning or a radio. Although no human could ever *feel* the difference leaving the radio out makes in a drag race, you know it's not there. Likewise no person could detect the weight difference leaving the paint off the frame makes, you leave it off to show how hard core you are about weight. Now if it were up to me, I'd leave the original groupset in place and blow my *entire* budget on wheels and tires.
