Grow a eucalyptus tree from seed!

Eucalyptus tree seeds have been very easy for me to germinate. Simply plant them about 1/8th of an inch in seed starting soil and off you go!
Eucalyptus plants can be indoor plants provided that you give them a lot of light and some love. You can also rip off part of a leaf to get that great fresh eucalyptus smell all over your home.

I just managed to get these same seeds going! At least 9/10 lol. They've grown really well for me in the last 3 weeks. I'm just figuring out when to take them out of the humidity dome 😂

Oh nice! Yeah humidity is tricky - I try to just crack the lid or let some of the normal room humidity in for a bit and then keep lengthening the time

@@HaniyaRae I lied 🤣 I checked my label and I planted them Jan 21st lol. They're like 2.5 inches high with at least 6 or 7 leaves each. I took the little dial in the top of my humidity dome last week. You think I'd still need to acclimate them to the air?

@@HaniyaRae I don’t *think* I will. They have a flight cage, so it’s much bigger than the crappy “standard” ones at a pet store. However, it’ll have to be fairly young to fit properly, while also being old enough they don’t rip it to shreds right away lol. But I think there should probably be a window of time where I can, so I’ll try!

I dont know why but I always thought Eucalyptus seeds would have a way tougher coat for some reason. Good vid homie you da best:)

Thanks so much! To be fair, I thought so too. These are my first? Tree seedlings that I have gotten to germinate. I think the key is that I don’t have to cold stratify them lol!

Yeah definitely. I’ve lost most of my eucalyptus because they’re not cold hardy :-(

usually around 12 hours a day! I would also try to keep them humid and water often. I did not do that and a bunch of mine dried out :(

What are you planning to do with all these plants when they start growing? Some years ago I started growing many tree seeds (that I collected in botanical gardens and similar) and had at some point way more than a hundred tree seedlings. When they started to become small trees, I had no idea what to do with them afterwards because I couldn't just throw them out. I had no place in my parents garden. I had no place of my own. I ended up giving them to friends, neighbours, organisations and even planted the native species in a reserve nearby.

Yeah! I’m not sure yet. I’m looking at land, hopefully, so I can save some, give some away, sell some. but I do like the idea of giveaways, though the seedlings aren’t big enough yet! right now I just keep building shelves and adding grow lights haha.

hey there! They should be only a couple of weeks. Both varieties of Eucalyptus I've planted have sprouted in less than a month

I just put my seeds in soil and moistened things up. I have it on a seed starter heating pad with grow lights above. Is there a period of time during the day/night that I should turn off the lights and turn off the heat?

Nice video! I have tried to grow eucalyptus twice but I failed and my soil gets colonized with fungi. It seems like keeping the seeds covered have raised the humidity and presumably led to fungal growth that kills the small sprouts. Did that happen to you ever? What should I change? I used perlite and coconut fiber as substrate. I kept them covered and receiving indirect sunlight. Appreciate it.

Hey! Funny, my problem has mostly been them drying out on me. So I used a fresh bag of sungro seed starting mix, which is spagnum moss and perlite (www.sungro.com/retail-product/black-gold-seedling-mix/), not sure what your ratio was from the coconut fiber to perlite? I'd say about 50/50 should be good? But the second thing is, once they've germinated, you should crack the lid and allow for airflow if you can. Did you do that? If yes to both, then I'd use less water, since coir tends to stay damp for forever. Hope that helps, I'm about to try again soon and hopefully not let them dry out too much, ha
